  • Juli and Roman love their mud and manure adobe house. They are beating climate change in Argentina by looking back to an ancient, indigenous building technique that has been used by indigenous groups across South America for generations. The gauchos built their houses here in the pampas using the same mud and grass that Juli and Roman pulled from their own property as the prime material for their home. Local sourcing of materials is one of the many reasons adobe construction is a sustainable alternative to more modern building materials with a larger carbon footprint, and a valuable tool in the fight against climate change. The recent UN Report on Climate Change only underscores the importance of eco-friendly, green building techniques.
Every Sunday Juli and Roman invite friends and neighbors to participate in a ‘minga’ - a community barn raising of sorts with indigenous roots where volunteers break bread, learn about adobe building and lend a hand to Juli and Roman. I joined them one Sunday not long ago.
