  • Counter Canter is one of the key elements to test the balance and collection of your dressage horse as you move up the levels in dressage. It is also a great way to prepare your horse for the flying changes in dressage.
In this video Olympic Medalist Gina Smith works with this horse and rider to work through 3 simple exercises to help improve your counter canter with your dressage horse.
Gina was named to the Canadian Equestrian Team in 1984. That same year she was named reserve rider for the 1984 Olympic Team in Los Angeles. In 1986, when the World Championships were held in Cedar Valley, Ontario, Gina was a member of the fifth placed home team with Malte. Gina was now training in Germany with Siegfried (Bimbo) Peilicke, and in 1988 she and Malte were members of the Olympic Team in Seoul, Korea that brought home the team bronze medal. Gina and Malte also finished twelfth individually.

...this instructor is talking of jumps in between. What does this mean? Is she cross-training while she works these transitions?

I think she means the horse 'jumping' up in its stride, so having more of a purpose in the canter and more elevation x (that is at least what my instructor means by it)
