Read the book loved the feeling of inescapable doom, but the ending was kind of meh. That said the subtext of being stuck in a rut and lack of ambition or agency was quite interesting.
Great review!
To me, the movie suffered so much from clumsy exposition, especially from the dialogs. And I missed the desperation (and dirt) you´d expected stranded characters to have.
(Also I´d like the importance of the light in the book, it gave a further feeling of dread and urgency than a quite vague "when the sun disappears" didn´t)
Yes! I even said to myself when Mina got in the shower after their escape and we saw the dirty water, "oh now there's dirt??"
one thing the book definitely did was convey how the characters physically were affected by being in the coop...agree that they were all waaaaaay too clean LOL
That would’ve been a horrible and predictable ending. I think it’s much creepier that she convinced it to go, but it’s still watching her
different strokes and all lol
Thank you for this breakdown. I’ve been looking for one😄
Do you get more folklore in the book? I just watched the movie and want more info on the creatures and was hoping to read the book for more backstory. What do you think
no, not really. they kept that pretty much the same
I enjoyed this book, haven't watched the movie yet. I want more fae as creatures stories!
SAME!!!
I feel like you’re suggested ending, while more cinematic, is too much like Jordan Peele’s “Us” twist
and like a lot of other movie twists lol I just think it would've fit what they set up better, that's all :)
I'd agree the technical aspects of the film were great here. I haven't read the book but even just watching the film it FELT like an awkward adaptation.
at least that was consistent whether you read the book or not lol
Do you recommend the book or are you just saying the book is better than the movie? Thank you.💖
the book was definitely better, but not my favorite book i've ever read.
I haven't seen the movie but watched the spoiler part anyway and I like your idea for the ending! Too bad they didn't do that. I did like the book though. I initially did not like the ending until I found out there's a sequel coming out so I'm excited for that!
whaaaaaat?!? I didn't know about the sequel! how interesting!!!
@@NightmareMaven YES! My library book actually contained the first chapter of it and it sounds interesting. I checked and it's suppose to come out this fall
the movie was visually stunning, the script was weak. I also thought Mina's backstory in the movie was setting it up for her to be a halfling, which I think could have been nice deviation. She likes pretending to be other people at night, she was mimicking her mother as a child. Then it could be revealed somehow, a traditional changeling story took place where Lucy and Mina were switched but somehow the mother kept both children.
yes!!! exactly!!!! idk why they set that up about her character just for it to be a weak metaphor for ANOTHER character....so weird
That's a shame. I think I'll wait until it's free for me. After reading I was hoping they'd change the ending for the movie too.
Side note, have you read Running Out of Time by Margaret Peterson Haddix? I'd love to see a video on that and The Village. It was my favorite book as a kid and I was very upset when the movie came out.
i actually never read any of her books! I'll check it out!
Book was way way WAY better than the movie. I actually hated the movie. Characters non existent, unnecessary changes, no atmosphere at all.
