Japanese guy gifting his family’s katana as an extension of friendship is probably the most human thing I’ve ever heard in my entire life.

Disgusting. His ancestors will be furious. The Americans NUKED two cities and killed hundreds of thousands of civilians. How many Americans gave their family heirlooms over for that travesty?

One more thing that limited the effect of the balloons was when they were launched. They started the campaign late in the year (1944). Late fall and winter rains soaked the pacific northwest; incendiary fires were snuffed, and explosive bombs buried themselves in the mud.

The FU-GO project was ultimately intended to use biological weapons developed by Unit 731. That unit was developing bombs that would land harmlessly but would instead release rats or other carriers of the Bubonic Plague. They deployed the test weapon in China, causing a limited pandemic and killing thousands. That silence campaign could have ultimately saved a lot of lives.

Some goat hunters found another balloon in 2019, also in British Columbia. It's interesting think how many of them are still out there, buried in snow on the coastal mountains or in some untouched piece of forest somewhere. Or how many of BC's many, many forest fires over the decades could've been started by one.

I am not so sure it's a failure; it cost Japan very little and caused the US to spend a lot of money to stop it.

Yes, these balloons technically achieved the same basic goal of an ICBM, but calling it "the world's first intercontinental ballistic missile" is beyond stretching it. the " intercontinental " part is the only piece that could be applied to a balloon with bombs on it.

I'm going to be honest, I really love your last two videos but wasn't really all that excited to watch this one so I put it off. Boy was that silly. This video was really great, well researched, compelling, so good. So I thought about why I wasn't excited to click on it in the first place if I like your other videos and I think it's the thumbnail. "Japans Secret Weapon" with the balloon thing made it seem like I was going to hear about a story I already knew. When it fact it was a story I'd heard about but didn't really know. My advice would be to change the thumbnail to say something like "The First ICBM" or something. I feel ridiculous even writing a comment like this but I really spent a good chunk of time thinking about this haha.
