Mighty" Joe Young is the lead guitarist on "Can I Change My Mind". His guitar licks on that track are very tasty indeed.:) He also played with Howlin' Wolf, Magic Sam, and Otis Rush. A very fine blues guitarist.

Kid, I grew up on this music and gotta say you nailed it. Very difficult little thing to play ain't it? Big fan of a similar lick in Betty Wright's "Clean Up Woman".

Probably the best R&B lick ever. You have done an A+++rendition.

The Dogtown Horns play this song with a couple of different bands and we've managed to fit the Tyrone Davis horn arrangement over both the Davis and Roy Buchanan versions. Frankly I've never paid attention to the finer points of how these guitar licks are played. Our guitarists are excellent and sound good doin it, right or wrong. But I did enjoy the investigation here, and these licks definitely distinguish this song from all others. Good job! Reminds me of when us horn players dissect a song, phrase by phrase, lick by lick, and all the harmony stacks. I think most people listening don't hear it, but every once in a while there's a musician in the crowd who'll catch a difference.

    Dear Andersen
I enjoyed your video very much. I have been trying to copy that guitar lick (Tyrone Davis) for 20 years and I have been playing it wrong. And Cissy Strut by the meters you are absolutely right about the bass part. Working in New Orleans I heard the meters many times (George Porter)Most people miss that bass part. But you sir played it correctly. Thank you very much I shall be listening.

Awesome! That's definitely right... thanks! It's kind of funny listening to the Roy Buchanan version. Roy's version sounds nice but I think even the great Roy gave up on learning how to play it correctly. Plus an interesting side note on the Roy Buchanan version is what's up with the chord change on the B section? He does the chords backwards...

Hey Kid, Nice job on the solo. I tried to fugure this out in 68 with the 45 from Dakar (Brunswick) label on 33 1/3 and tune down the guitar no protools then. Hmm 45 years ago, yeah I'm a blue hair. I heard lots a guys play their guess over the years. I was close but you are closer. Best I''ve heard. Enjoy your spin on stuff and totally agree...

I just started listening to "Night Train" and "Terry Hanck And Band Live" yesterday. Hearing you on the Live album do "Can I Change My Mind" got me going on this song again. I first got hooked on it off the "Livestock" album by Roy Buchanan in 1975. So here I am, learning the song off RUclips. I found another good version on the link I posted below. Also, I checked his lesson on "Slip Away" and that's way cool AND what is really cool is his right hand on that one. See you at The Torch Club!

That's not an ignorant question at all, since there's only one like it in existence :) It started out life as a Fender Jaguar style project, but it was really kind of a clunky guitar until the great guitar builder Bill Chapin (of Portland, OR) got his hands on it for me. He made a new neck for it and overall just turned it into a great axe. A third pickup was added as well. Chapin guitars can make you one, and he's never made a bad guitar. Best guitar maker I've ever seen. Very original too.

hint for the rookies as stuck as I was trying to watch his fingers: you're gonna be playing everything one fret lower if you're in standard tuning.
Just listen really close and you'll get it eventually.

Back in 2010 I got the chance to meet a very nice gentleman by the name of Mickey Rogers in Jackson, MS, who claimed to play that guitar part on the original recording by Tyrone Davis. He had the song in his own repertoair. It sounded just right when he played it. However, I’ve never been able to confirm that it’s him playing the guitar part. There’s no personell listed on my Dakar album.

Great playing! To add to the confusion, If you listen to the first verse, after the line “as I packed my bags to leave”, it sounds like he is playing single, descending, pull-off notes that are not contained within a double-stop or triad.

What I heard about the guitar on this (IIRC there were 3 guitars on it) was that Carl Woodford played the main figure and Mighty Joe Young played one of the other parts. Another common error on this is people playing a ii/iii minor release and it should be a ii/V!

You are correct however even Roy Buchanon played it straight, without all the hammer-ons so play it any way you see fit! The ppl dancing aren't gonna care one "ioda"! Not a hybrid key they tuned down one-half step so C becomes B while playing C form chords.

But, I've done it for years. Also, ur correct it is in B. Roy Buchanan plays it in C. I play it in A, ha ha! so I can sing it!!
