After 8 or 10 years of watching guitar lesson videos, I still find Justin is the best, easiest to understand, most accurate and humble / funny teacher out there. Saludos a Australia!
Watching him teach with such patience and enthusiasm really makes me happy. Also his lessons are easier to understand (unlike Marty Schwartz :P). He needs more recognition!
+Denis Hermans Hands down best internet teacher. Plus he is constantly giving free vids and begging for money, its crazy to see this in a time where clickbait and subscription based marketing is all the rave!
the most important reason why i like you rather than other people like marty is because you play the song first while singing, half the problem is solved there and then.
you probably dont give a damn but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..? I was dumb forgot my login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Sincere Stanley Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now. Takes a while so I will get back to you later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
Justin I'm speechless. You are such a fantastic teacher. I can't imagine anyone breaking this song down more clearly than this. You have a tremendous talent to DEmystify music for anyone wishing to play. Your talent as a teacher is grossly underrated. Keep teaching. :)
I'm trying to learn this song for a girl, and this tutorial is so very helpful. I've never finger-picked before, but with this I was able to pick it up really easily! Still rough, but I'm getting it. Thanks a lot sir!
I've been working on this song for months with different chords and a different strumming pattern. I think you've done a great job here, Justin, so much so that I will relearn the song with your chords and strumming/fingerstyle pattern. Looking forward to the new book!
Justin, please could you write out chord progressions in the description? I play along with you to learn the strumming technique but I can't remember the whole string of chords! Love the lessons :)
Been using your videos for over ten years and still find your tutorials whenever i want to learn something new. You always were, and still are the best guitar teacher on youtube. Thanks Justin!
I just noticed a lot of strange (to me) comments regarding this video. I've got a bit of a sense of humor but I'm missing it in the thread (those with a negative or off topic) words of some comments. I can't even understand that there are 15 thumbs down on this lesson. I admit I never leave a neg. comment on anyone's site that is trying their best to show a lesson (sure I stop them and move on) but what's to be gained by going off-topic or slamming their effort. I can guess but I don't really know. Anyway I don't know JustinGuitar and this is only the second lesson of his I've seen but damn...what an effort and what a positive and talented teacher. I'm really in awe of his ability to communicate and will purchase his songbook. I'm all for free speech so everyone's entitled to their thoughts. My thoughts about JustinGuitar are approaching a rave that might have been written by his mother, but so be it. Keep it up JustinGuitar. You have another fan!
Justin, you are a great teacher. You should check out "The General" by Dispatch. I can't figure out how to play it correctly but I'm sure you could make it into a great lesson that we could all understand
Please consider doing more mid 2000's early 2010's songs like this one, its an under-represented period of time for good quality guitar tutorials imo. 'Souls meets body' and 'title and registration' by death cab would be top notch, also the iron and wine such great heights cover, 'boats and birds' by Gregory and the hawk and maybe "Don't die in me" by Mirah are all on my wishlist. Thanks for the lessons, you're a champ m8
I have different strumming pattern that I thought sounds closer to the record. Let me know if this could be correct. Let's say we are playing an A minor I go, pluck A string, strum chord, then pluck the B then the G string, then strum and pluck the B string.
I play the same way as you. It's interestingly a combination of strum / pluck pattern which is kinna the opposite or not a customary way of plucking like the older plucked songs.
I totally love this song Justin. I have Death Cab for Cuties 'Plans' on a playlist on my iPod at work and for about a month I am sure I would have ended up listening to this song 100 times or more. There is one thing that I think you miss when playing it (and I have watched many videos of Ben Gibbard playing this too to watch what he does), when he goes to the Fm, he doesn't pluck the bass note, rather he strums it. It is subtle, but it sounds so beautiful with that Fm being strummed.
I had watched your videos and been a member of you site for a few months, but I kind of lost time to play guitar or learn new things for a while here. I ended up just kind of playing a song or two and doing minimum movement training every other day for about 10 minutes. This video has already had me playing my guitar for a half hour today alone lol. Thanks Justin
i put felt (and velocro cos the felt didnt last) on my pick guard because my (fake) nails hit it and make an annoying 'tap' sounds when strumming if it's not there!
I never really listened to the lyrics of this song until this lesson. What a perfect composition on lyrics and melody. I must say this possibly beats out McCartneys "Yesterday" and "Here There and Everywhere" in melody and Wilson's "God Only Knows" in terms of lyrics. A masterpiece. Thank you, Justin, for sharing. And you voice sounds great on this.
Justin! You really are the best teacher on RUclips. I’ve watched four orfive videos on this song, and no one broke down the right hand rhythm like you did. You have a methodical yet laid-back approach to teaching that is simply excellent. Thank you so much.
thank you so much this has been so helpful!! i had been struggling so much about this strumming pattern and didn't know what was going on but now i get it all!!! good job and please keep on the good work :)
Hey man,Been learning through your videos since I've began learning guitar. I can honestly say that I've learned the basics from you. Going on 15yes now! Thank you, Justin.
Justin, you do really well vocally on the song. Normally your voice is a bit husky when you sing pop, but this time you sound like a huskier, less whiney Ben Gibbard. Well done.
Just wanted to say thanks for stressing the whole practice and repetition part. I've just started teaching a friend who's an absolute beginner and I'm having a hard time getting across to her how important muscle memory is to playing the guitar. She gets frustrated because she can't switch between chords fast enough...and I've tried to explain that it's impossible to be fast enough while you're still having to think about where to move your fingers. You just have to practice until its so ingrained it's almost automatic. Or as my highschool music teacher put it. You don't know how to play a song until you can play it while reading out loud from a book at the same time..
I am just going take the alternating bass finger picking right away. Just work it out slowly, and believe you can do it. I learned over the hills and far away in my first 2 months of playing.
Justin has mended this video, it didn't work before. He is sounding more himself singing now he has got braver. Still little bit rrr should live in Shropshire they like o r a. I'm only teasing, I love these lessons.
his tutorial is pretty good though. I like the close up strumming shot. that is the key to the song. If you practice you can learn this just takes a little time
Love of mine Someday you will die But I'll be close behind I'll follow you into the dark No blinding light Or tunnels, to gates of white Just our hands clasped so tight Waiting for the hint of a spark If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black And I held my tongue as she told me "Son, fear is the heart of love, " so I never went back And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark You and me have seen everything to see From Bangkok to Calgary And the soles of your shoes are all worn down The time for sleep is now But it's nothing to cry about 'Cause we'll hold each other soon In the blackest of rooms And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks Then I'll follow you into the dark Then I'll follow you into the dark

Ithink Justin is the best internet guitar teacher!
+Denis Hermans Hands down best internet teacher. Plus he is constantly giving free vids and begging for money, its crazy to see this in a time where clickbait and subscription based marketing is all the rave!
I think Justin's the best teacher and cracks me up reading out chords f behind 😂 must also say Justin you sang this song brilliantly
How dare you talk about Marty that way meatbag. MARTY IS A TRUE LEGEND
@@MarcGervais1 Nah, he half asses it.
the most important reason why i like you rather than other people like marty is because you play the song first while singing, half the problem is solved there and then.
This is good advice to any youtuber who does guitar lessons
I straight away close the tutorials that don't play a bit of the song first..
you probably dont give a damn but does any of you know of a way to log back into an instagram account..?
I was dumb forgot my login password. I would appreciate any help you can offer me!
@Skylar Kylo instablaster =)
@Sincere Stanley Thanks for your reply. I found the site thru google and im trying it out now.

Wow a tutorial that actually plays the song correctly, that's rare
you have a lot of passion and good energy that makes me really happy. and the tutorial was magnificent, thank you
This is one of my favourite songs, such a beautiful, haunting melody.
Justin I'm speechless. You are such a fantastic teacher. I can't imagine anyone breaking this song down more clearly than this.
You have a tremendous talent to DEmystify music for anyone wishing to play. Your talent as a teacher is grossly underrated.
Keep teaching. :)
2020 and Justin is and will be the best teacher ever 🤘🤘
Thank you! The way you broke down the finger picking made so much sense and opened this song up for me.
Best video I've ever seen on this song. Been playing it for years but never exactly right. Thank you!
I'm trying to learn this song for a girl, and this tutorial is so very helpful. I've never finger-picked before, but with this I was able to pick it up really easily! Still rough, but I'm getting it. Thanks a lot sir!
You are a fantastic human being Justin. Thank you.
Thank you so much Justin You motivated me to dig out my old guitar which I played last 8 years ago
I've been working on this song for months with different chords and a different strumming pattern. I think you've done a great job here, Justin, so much so that I will relearn the song with your chords and strumming/fingerstyle pattern. Looking forward to the new book!
Good job Justin, you have got just the right voice for that song!
not having touched my guitar for a very long time this was a very helpful and useful tutorial for a true beginner great work
Justin, please could you write out chord progressions in the description? I play along with you to learn the strumming technique but I can't remember the whole string of chords! Love the lessons :)
Been using your videos for over ten years and still find your tutorials whenever i want to learn something new. You always were, and still are the best guitar teacher on youtube. Thanks Justin!
Great lesson once again. You never fail to impress us on your teaching method.
👏👏👏👏👏 awesome !!!!
Una belleza!!! From Argentina. Gracias !

Welcome to youtube, where the average viewer won't take 2 seconds to thumbs up a video, but will walk through hell to tell you that you suck
Youre a legend!! I thought this was going to be so difficult. Thanks so much :)

Thanks for the lessons, you're a champ m8
For that bass note, wouldn't it just be easier to use C/G chord so you wouldn't have to alternate fingers?
Great tutorial. Already knew the dog but was looking to learn the pattern for more advanced and this is just fantastic.
Dude this was an amazing lesson. I loved the way you sung the chords with song lol!!! Awesome
One of my favourite songs. Thanks for the lesson :)
Fantastic tutorial! I love all of your videos.
you're a great teacher!

Thank you so much for teaching a new kind of rhythm ;3

I love how sometimes you can sort of hear his accent when he's singing things.

Great video, as usual I find your tutorials better then any of the other youtube guitar channels.
The best song about purgatory ever!
thank you so much this has been so helpful!!
i had been struggling so much about this strumming pattern and didn't know what was going on but now i get it all!!! good job and please keep on the good work :)

What a great acoustic guitar song! I think I can just barely play bar chord F well enough to give this a try.
It did help. Thank you!
man, you're awesome!
Thank you!
darn those stinkin twiddles, they get me every time
You've actually really got a nice singing voice buddy! Earned a subscriber as well, thanks for the help
Legend bro!
it is a really clever way to sing it and know when to change chords if you aren't really good at a that
great lesson as always! got a bit curious about the pickguard?
Love of mine
Someday you will die
But I'll be close behind
I'll follow you into the dark
No blinding light
Or tunnels, to gates of white
Just our hands clasped so tight
Waiting for the hint of a spark
If Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
In Catholic school, as vicious as Roman rule
I got my knuckles bruised by a lady in black
And I held my tongue as she told me
"Son, fear is the heart of love, " so I never went back
And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
You and me have seen everything to see
From Bangkok to Calgary
And the soles of your shoes are all worn down
The time for sleep is now
But it's nothing to cry about
'Cause we'll hold each other soon
In the blackest of rooms
And if Heaven and Hell decide that they both are satisfied
Illuminate the no's on their vacancy signs
If there's no one beside you when your soul embarks
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Then I'll follow you into the dark
Anyway I can make a request? You should do Bright Eyes First Day of My Life! Very similar to this song, would be awesome.
Thanks, guy! :D
teach more of the classic solos !!!! thanks !
yeah makes perfect sense, thanks!
I see you into the G!
"But ill be F behind"... "Our F clasped so tight" XD
Very nice Justin!
How about a lesson for Blackbird!?
Amazing tutorial
I LOVE YOU MAN...
