Window Sash Putty Removal

Technique for removing old glazing putty from window sash. FYI, this is a quick and dirty removal of putty with the primary interest of getting the glass out without cracking it. This approach damages the sash quite badly and shouldn't be used if you plan on keep and using the sash. To remove putty and keep the sash in good shape it is much better to use steam or heat to soften the putty and break it's bond with the wood.

You folks should use the Putty Chomper. Saves a ton of time and headache. It is new and fits most all oscillating tools.

For this sash I didn't care about the wood and just wanted to get the glass out without cracking it, so I didn't mind ripping the wood apart. The sash was heavily damaged and was being thrown away, I was just after the wavy glass.

Yeah, this is NOT how I would remove putting in any sash that I want to save, this is just quick and dirty to remove the putty and keep the glass. If I were removing putty and trying to save the glass I'd use a heat gun to warm the putty, then scape/pull it away without damaging the wood. Use heat gun to soften putty. Use putty knife or tape knife shield to cover the glass so it will not crack by heat.

Rubbish if the heat gun heats up the pin holding glasz i place it can cause the pane to crack , heat only works on butyl putty

Who the hell does this , im a glazier and this just does not work , i take it you arent a time served glazier which the building trade regulators decided to downgrade this from a trade to semi skilled , now we have you tube videos like this flying about along with people drilling holes in glass to " demist " units , ive just finished removing putty from windows on a traditional building in Edinburgh , some 2,770 panes , using this method i would still be there till next june
