Bold colors are great for your own personal home. But neutral colors show much better and attract a wider variety of people. Beautiful home!!! Great fresh-up Sophie.
I love that Marylou said, "I went with classic craftsman colors.", no... just nope. Classic craftsman colors were, sage, mustard, cream, brick red, robin's egg blue, and white... None of which were what she chose.
You're definitely right. It took a coat of primer and three coats of a high quality paint to cover a bright red bathroom that was in my house. I cringe now every time I see red on the walls of a house.
If it’s original craftsman trim and it’s undamaged, you ruin the value by painting over it. I have stripped quite a few pieces of painted trim. It’s pricey and it does damage the trim a bit.
They left the trim natural in the downstairs, but upstairs where some trim had already been painted white, they painted the remaining trim so it would be cohesive.
It will sell better now with the changes. That's real estate for you. But I didn't mind the original colors, although I'd have probably better enjoyed a toned down version of each. I agree with the homeowners in that some color on the walls look great in this era of home. It was a good idea to create the new blue bedroom, although I'd have used a not so bold shade of blue.
I especially love that they kept the bright blue in the second bedroom. The breakfast shelf and computer area downstairs is great. Even tho I like brighter colours, the yellow didnt go with the kitchen cupboards so its nice that it got toned down a bit. The master bedroom looks a bit bland. It could have done with a splash of colour like a set of small bright pillows on the bed. Very nice altogether :) It hopefully will sell quickly!
They really should have cleaned the pool. It should make you think of how fun and refreshing it would be, not how much time you'll have to spend cleaning it.
The husband was dead serious - he admired her choices.....and they couldn't see that the average home buyer wants a neutral home and can't see past a horrible paint color.
Love the new colors and the blue walls in the second bedroom... they should have painted the staircase... that red is still too much. Most home owners make the mistake of thinking that people love bright bold colors... better to tone down the wall colors before you put your house up for sale..

I agree, I really think it's easy to look past paint color, and see the bones of the house, features you're looking for etc. This house is beautiful and you can see that beyond the paint colors which I actually like haha!!

That pool would be great in Florida, but I don't know about Canada. Probably made it harder to sell. I had one once, it was a lot of work and expense and when we didn't want it anymore we had to move.

Why oh why would you ruin lovely wood trim by painting it? It just looks cheap when you do that. Certainly it is an easy, quick, and inexpensive way to decorate but styles change over time and stripping the paint back off when it is no longer in fashion will require a lot more effort than decorating around the beautiful wood trim in the first place. A real estate professional might suggest painting trim because they are after a quick sale. However, to me it devalues the house.
some of the upstairs trim was already painted. it was a bit disjointed and nonsensical. all they did was to make it more cohesive. notice that they did nothing to the wood downstairs
It is fun, because att my mom's home just around the corner her trims are the same as in the Windows, dark wood and she was sad about it and in our home, they painted the trims around the Doors but not around the Windows and I would rather want the original dark wood than painted white. It looks weird when there is a different.

Great location and beautiful house, but that colour is headache-inducing, and couldn't they at least have taken a sheet of sandpaper and fixed the scratched cupboard doors and slapped a little stain on them? The After is just gorgeous!
Very big improvement except for the kitchen. The new handles look cheap and kitchen needs a new floor. I personally dislike those wooden cabinets. I think there would be much better painted, Plus the counter tops need replacing. They look cheap. I did really like the new bar and the new office. Problem is if you have kids and need to work from home, the office space in the kitchen maybe too noisy especially during zoom calls.
Kitchen really could have had more of an investment. It was so stuck. Blech! The backsplash, counter-top and cabinet fronts could have been painted to update, - and so cheaply!
I think paint is a personal choice that (for me) would be something for the new owners to choose. Kitchens and bathrooms are worth an upgrade. I would make an offer on this house with the cost of a new kitchen/ bath figured in. New hardware and a little polyurethane are not going to cut it. I am surprised potential buyers don't make a low offer with the thought of rolling up their sleeves and maker it their own home.
It's interesting to see these early 2000s updates in 2021 where they look so outdated already :) Still for that time they were really changing the space significantly.
White paint is nice. Lite blue color in kitchen... not soo nice. White cabinet pulls on kitchen cabinets look cheap for home priced at $549K. Like the office but could have installed cabinet doors to make it look more custom. Especially since it's 1st room buyers see.
"It shows very well." "There's nothing to criticize." It's bland and boring. I am always puzzled by people who can't see beyond a paint color, or the carpeting. Actually puzzled and delighted. I've scored and flipped three great houses simply because people can't see beyond what's there.
There is a beautiful medium vibrant blue that was kept or in other words not painted over. This is near the exact color I painted our office. The general plan is good .The green was too much, but NO color is boring. The clay color on the walls looks dead to me. The kitchen looks sad and the livingroom looks cold and unimaginative. For some reason, the light from the windows isn' t translating into the room. It needs a soft warm color on the walls.. As it is, the only "life" in the room is the art over the fireplace. I would bring a balance of color at least, in throw pillows on the couch and into the rug.
She always seems to ruin dining rooms, the before table and chairs were lovely, she replaces with smaller and cheap! With the trend being big long tables, why she puts in a small one ???
I like the mature trees, but there's no yard in the back. Dr.'s say people who like coloring their brain chartreuse are very controlling, but I think some green grass would help unless you're really the market not looking for this aspect of maintenance, and can afford to have your pool cleaned, and decks/stone touched up in lieu of this. Instead of being a green wall letting nature blossom even if you're not a green thumb. The grey- green dining room is uh. I would want a kitchen table. I think the underlying wood on the kitchen cupboards was nicer without the stain, just remove it ,bleach it ,and seal it,do the flooring. The fridge to stove to sink in front of a window layout is what would sell me. The front could use a car port ,the tiny garage is offsetting curb appeal. There's hardwood everywhere, everywhere, everywhere, everywhere...... I wonder if it's real and actually a selling feature.

Just paint white over the lime green and a few of the other colors. Done. But no, we're going to spend thousands doing other stuff, right?
They bought a new dream house and his business is not doing well???!!!
What is the color of the green type you use in many of your pictures?
I would have painted that 20s bungalow just about the same sage green.
the red hall ways would make me set back.
Bold colours, yes, but I would have been able to see the potential and do not understand why it did not sell
Didn't she have a show in the UK? How'd she end up in the US?
Isn't this Canada? They had houses in the suburbs of Toronto too.
Canada
Omg, buyers are crazy....paint whoopee. As for the knobs in the kitchen: yuck, they look really cheap.
Why purple and red?
Red in the painting 🖼 clashed with the purple color.
So beautiful.
Did the house sell?
Why can people not see through the Decor and painted walls...
Whyaskwhy?
Just get that money !
She always seems to ruin dining rooms, the before table and chairs were lovely, she replaces with smaller and cheap! With the trend being big long tables, why she puts in a small one ???
Are you not aware this episode is 15 years old?
To make the room look bigger?
People know the table is just a model! Itsthe space that Makes them DREAM
I wonder if it's real and actually a selling feature.
yes the kitchen needed work,....but I LOVE that colors on the wall so much more before!!! beautiful green beautiful yellow,...all very happy colors and I hate white and off white walls and white kitchen capinets....URGH....sooooo boring and cold now....
Pretty good but I’d rather eat breakfast at a proper table!
They can eat at the dining table. It's a waste of space if they don't use the dining room very often
They could have changed the curtains in living and dining rooms.
