An extract from Wayne McGregor's Chroma, featuring Laura Morera and Eric Underwood dancing to The Hardest Button to Button by The White Stripes. Find out more at www.roh.org.uk/...
Wayne McGregor's Chroma explores the drama of the human body and its ability to communicate extremes of thought and emotion. The score, drawn from original music by Joby Talbot and his arrangements of music by American rock band The White Stripes, is combined with stark, minimalist designs by architect John Pawson. Against this backdrop is set the inventive and energy-driven choreography of McGregor. Chroma had its premiere in 2006 at the Royal Opera House and in 2007 received an Olivier Award for Best New Dance Production.

Holy cow the technique and strength of these dancer is insane...
watching the muscles stretch is entrancing
and the lights!
like when I watch gymnastics or thinks at olympics. what bodies can do IS Amazing
is it really? it just looks dumb to me
@@yougotta2505 cos you are not artsy. Which is completely okay, some poeple are not, or not to a deep level at least.
Super ❤
How are some people saying that they lost interest in the choreography? This is one of the most captivating pieces I have ever seen. It's beautiful. It really is. I was on the edge of my seat.
I agree......has a "harsh flow" vibe to it....lovely to watch!
Did you fall?
Yes this is very well constructed music and choreography in unison, lovely danced with good lighting. Great!
I was literally laughing out loud. Who are you?! *resumes laughing* @constantinos
Kyla Grace absolutely agree! plus, dont forget the music! this is pure art!!!
How precise, intense, balanced and isolated..... And the contrast of their skin makes a great visual "effect"!

@Gaia Barone Constructed by nature.
@@cryforthemoon well said :)
I come back to this again and again. Brilliant music, choreography, and dancers. I only wish I could have learned even part of it back when I was in training.
Love, love, love both Eric Underwood and Laura Morera in this. They are the perfect choice. I’ve watched it so many times and never get tired of it. I have to revisit every month or so. It’s just so damn incredible.💕
I can't get over how amazing this song is covered like this, sounds dark and enchanting
I am too uncultured to understand any this but still deeply mesmerized by their moves.
Not uncultured just more intelligent--it seems multiculturalism in Britten has taken a decidedly silly turn.
@@aplato8576 multiculturalism is rapidly destroying any semblance of population coherence Britain has ever has, and then people are surprised when our society begins to fall apart
@@rees4232 So you don't support globalization? The mingling of different people. You kinda sound dumb.
@@diondredunigan2583 Who mentioned different people mingling? I queried the cohabitation of world cultures
@@rees4232 Cohabitation of world cultures can only happen if the people of different cultures interact and share ideas. That is what multiculturalism is. You claimes that multiculturalism is destroying population coherence in Britain and is cuasing society to fall apart, or has done so. This insinuates that you do not support different people mingling. I really shouldn't have had to explain this.
I've watched with amazement, surprise, and sheer delight, at the way the totally unique way, Wayne McGregor works his choreography with the Royal Ballet's dancers. To me, this is stunning, dramatic, and shows off the divine bodies of Eric Underwood, and Laura Morera. This demands a very high class of balletic skills, which they certainly have, and a different dimention and understanding of their bodies, to even attempt, to carry it off. With the intense music, it's brilliant and different. BRAVO.
Love it, though I always wonder what Madam would think of today's RB!
I think she would have loved it. Remember she was part of the Ballets Russes that broke every convention in its day
The man's legs are goals.
I love this so much, love this music love this movement, classical ballet is lovely, but I so happy every time I see something new with modern music and choreography using ballet technique. I know it not for everyone but I happy that ballet don't stay stagnant.
exactly! if it's not using ballet technique, could it even be called modern ballet? it would be just modern dance,
@@nicolemir3496 ballet is defined by specific ways of movement and foot work/technique, not the music.
This choreography blows my mind! Nothing short of brilliant.
Five years later, and this is still FIERCE!
30% ballet, 70% gymnastics, 100% awesome. The strength, grace and beauty in this routine is remarkable. To have this much control of one's body must be wonderous.
Ok, not everything outside of classical ballet repertoire is automatically gymnastics. That's fast becoming a catchall term instead of lyrical or contemporary, though there is a huge dance element to RG, which also resembles Chinese classical dance.
I agree with the 100% awesome, but being classically trained myself, I would have to say it's 90% ballet, and 10% other. I can tell you these dancers and this choreography is almost all classical stuff. They start and end in basic ballet positions...lots of fifth, first, and second positions. A dancer can't begin to do this choreography without being fully classically trained. Very little gymnastics here. Their lines are immaculate. I love contemporary ballet.
I never thought I would see ballet technique and overt sexuality in the same dance. This definitely accomplishes that.
lmao.... alotta ballets are dirty af.... what you mean bro xD
Right! That's baby boy who played the catapillar in Alice in Wonderland. Super slithery and smooth
You must not seen alot of ballet haha
Look up most of matthew bournes work
Agreed
Yep, still my favorite ballet piece of all time. Hands down!
EERRRIIIICCCC walking god literally. 0:39 the strut kills me. 1:11 that loooook. 1:28 that wiiine. 1:34 that wave. 1:44 this entire section. 2:21 perfection on a plate. 3:12 damn son. he makes this so incredible. iconic.
Thnx
They are the best dancers for Chroma. I have watched this so many times. Very eccentric.
One of the most stunning performances I have EVER seen. Both dancers have the most impeccable bodies and the choreography is intense, filled with sexuality and gets my heart racing just from watching it. Also, the contrast of their skin is so appealing and adds somethings special to the piece. I can't believe this doesn't have more views.
Another great piece by Wayne danced beautifully by the lovely Eric Underwood and Laura Morera. I've watched Eric for years and I am astounded by his strength, artistry and technique. What great technician.
This came up in my feed randomly and I clicked on it all "wth there's no way they're doing ballet to a White Stripes song"
I was pleasantly surprised
Nakaila Gunderson crazy orchestration...right? I love it
Same
Humans in total and utter control of their body. The choreography and dancers had me completely transfixed
I really love the juxtaposition between the flighty, more rigid steps of the girl and the strength and precision of the guy. It almost imitates a bee and an lion, which of course have no relationship, but still. I also really love the power struggle feeling of the entire piece.
These choreographers and their troupe took ballet to a whole new level of sensuality. There are lots of contrasts - sophisticated and very dynamic dance steps with a minimalist decor, seemingly their bodies are fragile and delicate yet muscular and strong. The movements, the music everything is absolutely captivating and breathtaking from start to finish!
Morera - such an underrated dancer. But, look at her go at this! Amazing.
i appreciate the sulleness of the tone such duality cannot be on par with such finesse and regulation.

Gotta add Eric Underwood to my list of dancers to find videos of. Came for Morera, loved her and everything else about this clip. Thx, ROH!
THEY ARE GORGEOUS. BEAUTIFUL AND SENSUAL PIECE. FULL OF ENERGY.
I have no words to even begin to describe how good this was; just incredible.
Stunning! Choregraphy and Dancers alike. Stunning! Visceral and highly intelligent movement vocabulary, and brilliantly danced.
How can some people be held back because it's ''strange''? Art is strange. And that's the beauty of it
Art is in the eye of the beholder. It's subjective. Just because someone doesn't understand it doesn't mean anything is wrong with them, they are probably more in tune with a different type of art style.
Yeah, sorry. I'm one of those who found this odd. I can imagine some pretentious choreographer pushing the boundaries and crying at his own weirdness. No hate for the dancers, but the dance was so off for me.
But, each to their own; if you like this sort of thing.
@@nothanks1239 I agree, it didn't really seem to flow. It was all over the place with no apparent meaning.
god i FREAKING LOVE THIS BALLET....i saw it multiple times when SF Ballet did it. this was the first Wayne McGregor piece i ever saw. And I've been a huge fan of his work ever since!! (also the white stripes are pretty darn cool too!)
Kris Zaragoza Same here ! This was my first ballet as well and I felt in love with it.
When they danced together it was great, and the lifts were magic!
Wow! Just... wow. That was incredible. Ballet rarely keeps me on the edge of my seat, but that! Wow.
The human body is
AMAZING!
Those looks between them tho... They're so amazing
I am entranced by the enchanted emphasis on the flexibly-demanding techniques, the complex pose compositions, fluid transitions and the requisite partner synchronization thereof.
0:38 when you hop out of the shower but the only towel left is really small
The dancing is incredible as everyone's said but THE MUSIC IS PHENOMENAL too and adds so much to the performance.
When you run into a spider web...
Will Owens i actually stopped breathing because of how had i laughed at this 😂
OH SHIT DAMMIT I CANT STOP LAUGHING NOW
To me, it’s like she’s an ironing board that he’s trying to put back in the closet.
Thanks to the minimalist costumes, I didn't see people dancing....I saw sheer movement in front of me. The music was astounding as well.
omgoodness, he looks and moves like Perfect Poetic Poetry in Motion, Bravo, thanks for uploading this hands 👏
That was extraordinary- the dancers, the choreography. And fit perfectly with the music. I’m so completely blown away.
Eric Underwood's physique is sculpture in motion.
The strenght and tension they have is just so incredibly beautiful!
Let us have it revived by the Royal Ballet soon, please! Totally sensational!
I would love it so, so much if they did a life broadcast of Chroma, since I don't live in England. Okay, because it probably is too short on its own, they would need to add another ballet, but hey! I'd most definitely not complain.^^
Absolutely amazing, mind-boggling. These dancers are incredible.
I'm sure she is something to watch; I apologize to try and watch through her around her to see more of that most incredible man in motion. Wow. Instant complete fan. Thank you and God bless you both. Amen.
Stunning! Choreo, dancers, music, scenography... One of the best things i have ever seen in dance!
El hombre es absolutamente bellísimo, posee un dominio increíble de su corporalidad, que además es de otro mundo. ¡Hermoso trabajo!
This is divine. How the bodies move with the music and compliment the tempo exquisitely!
their bodies are art. I feel like this is what humans are supposed to look like.
What did I just witness? Mind-blowing.
I think the guy was more graceful than the woman, but maybe it's just the choregraphy which gave me this feeling! It was fascinating though
it was like seeing two women dancing.
I personaly liked the womens dancing more, feel like she was more precise.
Is it weird when a man is more graceful than a woman? So ignorantly judge art and be guided by silly stereotypes.
G G what? No? Its just the opinions of this single dance
@@veronicakreiman3405 totally agree. Seems like she focused more on the dancing and story telling than appearing graceful or sexy to the audience.
I LOVE this piece..LOVE the movement!! These two are incredible..Love this girl..the movement looks so good on her..and he is Extaordinary!! I watch this everyday for inspiration..thank u both..and the choreographer and the musician😊😊
Control, precision, grace, power. This is amazing.
DAMN those two dancers are extraordinary I'm sure Mr McGregor is happy. Just STUNNING the physicality and the technical prowess.
Потрясающе! Просто шикарно! Молодцы!
Это первый положительный комментарий от русскоязычного, который я видела. Все от России говорят, что это не балет.
@@Wyndlespindle
Pure. artistic. brilliance.
This is when one realizes the importance of being economical with praise, reserve it for the exceptional.
I found this really interesting to watch, though it put me on edge. It takes this very traditional dance form usually hyper - focused on beauty and grace, and twists it. The music is classical, but jarring and repetitive. The choreography showcases this outstanding technical skill using ballet's
movements, but it's edgy and sexy and distorted, not how I think of ballet at all. And with their faces but really matching their bodies, the whole thing is a bit disturbing. Really cool, and very well executed.
Power, control and grace! I loved every second of this performance!
This unique and very expressive! Immediately visible beauty of the classical school. That's the beauty of the modern approach: to show the charm of the dance with others methods, but very beautiful methods.
Such perfection, power and grace. They soar without leaving the ground somewhat. Bravo!
Those skins look so mint! :D Valve worked real well on this
This is DOPE! I don't know what my eyes just saw - but I love it! Ballet never looked so good 👍thumbs up!
The body control is great !!
Normally, that is not a style of dance that I care for. But that was purely awesome!
Thank you!
I'm too unsophisticated to understand this art.

@@ArttuPeltoniemi well I don't like to see it.
It's not art. It's an arrogant attempt to create "artsy fartsy" and "cutting edge modern art". We all know that isn't art. They are just making up for their lack of talent.
Charis, this is SO beautiful! I just can't stop watching them. I am totally addicted to this!

This display of strength and beauty is so strong its ugly...
