Two Big Boys for 35 cars? That is the epitome of overkill. Big Boys were the most powerful steam locomotives ever built, they could easily pull 100 car train
It’s also like giving a small metal ball to the strongest man in the world and you’re telling him to throw it as hard as he could. That’s what this situation is like, right?
@@VeshremyEnjoyer Well, let's see one Big Boy is said to be capable of pulling a 15 mile long cargo freight train. A one mile freight train usually consists of 80 - 85 cars. So, 80 x 15 = 1,200 cars or so. So two Big Boys should be able to pull double that number. Like 1,400 freight cars. Damn...
It's a shame that this mod doesn't have the articulated front wheels (Wheels that move independently of the rest of the engine!) But overall, this mod really completes this railroad!
That exact Union Pacific 4-8-8-4 Big Boy #4014 is being restored to working condition in Cheyenne, WY at this moment. It should be up and running by 2019. It IS the biggest steam locomotive in the world!!
Its actually not the biggest steam locomotive in the world. There are longer and stronger steam locomotives however the 4-8-8-4 is the most successful of any.
Actually, the OP is right: 4-8-8-4 Big Boy is the largest steam locomotive in the world, followed by 4-6-6-4 Challenger and 2-10-0 Decapod. And at a weight of 625 tons, I'd like to know of any steam locomotives that saw regular service for more than 5 years, that wasn't military equipment or had a specialized use, because to my knowledge, there isn't an engine bigger than Big Boy.
The cab is accurate for an oil burner even, amazing. It has the atomiser controls on the left, and 3985 and 4014 have 2 drivers to run them, and generally 2 fireman as well under oil firing.
They sure did. And in early 2019, after 60 years in retirement, it was fully restored for excursion service to commemorate the 150th anniversary of the Transcontinental Railroad/Golden Spike ceremony. :)👍
Great video, but did anyone notice that he kept saying "they used this to get the supplies to/from Pearl Harbor... Last I checked that was in Hawaii, how a train would get there doesn't make much sense to me. LOL, it reminded me of that one song peter and quagmire sing of family guy, "train on the water, boat on the track"LOL.
Hopefully, if they release a new GTA game, they'll include Train missions, Police missions, Firefighter missions, Taxi missions, Trucker missions, Taxi missions, and Ambulance missions, like GTA San Andreas did.
its not actually pearl harbor they used them for. it was for hauling heavy freight through Sherman hill. they went from Utah to Cheyenne and Laramie Wyoming.
The Big Boys were also designed to take on the steep grades of the Wasatch Mountains. In fact, the Big Boys were originally meant to be called Wasatches.
This mod is absolutely amazing, its bit of a game changer actually! It opens up so many awesome ideas and possibilities in the relm of machinima making! Great Video!

I honestly find it hilarious you decided to do a double header with Big Boys, since the Big Boy was basically created so that you wouldn't have to do a double header with two smaller locomotives over certain sections of track.
Amazing detail on the big boy. Drivers don’t turn fast enough so it looks like it’s almost like sliding. But these things could top out out around 80 mph. And they still do double head it’s just not really popular anymore. But nice mod tho for the most part. Also the stack don’t put out a lot of smoke. If there was 35 cars behind you. Then one would’ve been easily able to pull that. 4014 just got restored fully last year and it is about to finish its 1 1/2 month race across the Midwest so it’s nice you chose 4014.
not even close. 80 on flat ground with moderate length train, just like the Challenger counterpart, but they rarely ever ran at full speed, that wasnt their purpose
@@midwestrailfanner2268 the reason the 4010x class was made because 2 engines in one frame was cheaper than 2 separate engines... So you're telling me they basically double headed 4010s to make the steam power of 4 engines at the time?
My son loves trains and we have one of the original big boy trains at the local train museum in Scranton, PA. The horn honking long long short long, is actually a horn signal for crossings, human or car. One long means the train stopped and locked its breaks and two short horns means that the train started moving. Another fun fact about big boy in particular is that its too heavy for most standard train tracks so most tracks that are still operational arent tracks a big boy could travel on. You said in the description that they are restoring 4014 and you can actually follow their progress on their youtube channel. And another little fun fact, big boy has a little sister who's practically as big. Challenger is a 4-6-6-4 whereas, Big Boy is 4-8-8-4 like you mentioned.
