What to do on Iraklia
The bays of Merihas and Alimia
Merihas is a natural sight that impresses with its vertical rocks of 100m high surrounding it, the perfect nesting site for many a rare bird. Two beautiful beaches complement the scene.
In Alimia enjoy the crystal clear water and dive to see the German hydroplane that sank during World War II.
The Agios Ioannis Prodromos
One of the most beautiful caves in the Cyclades with stunning stalactite and stalagmite décor, well worth a visit on St. John’s holiday, when Vespers are held in its first chamber.
Bousoules rock paintings
Marks made by pirates to remind them where to find their loot? Astronomical musings of the ancient Cycladites? Ancient signposts denoting local landmarks, such as hamlets or springs? The big stones with their intriguing spiral designs have mystified the experts for years.
In Heraklia there are the settlements of Agios Georgios located on the homonymous bay, from which the island was named at times, the settlement of Panagia, the capital of the island and the settlement of Agios Athanasios located in the western part of the island (in recent years it has desolate).
Its three settlements, Agios Athanasios, Agios Georgios and Panagia, constitute an independent community, Iraklia, which belongs to the province of Thira (Santorini). Its inhabitants in 1940 numbered 227 while in 2001 they reached 151. The capital city of Panagia is connected by a long paved road to the port of Ag. George. Another asphalted road also connects Panagia with the Turkopigado beach.
Its arable land once reached (in 1960) about 1,000 acres. So was the production of cereals, tobacco and pulses, as well as cheese, cheese and honey.
The remains of ancient settlements and tombs as well as the ruins of the ancient sanctuaries of the goddess Tychus and Lophitus Zeus are preserved on this islet. Evidence that since 3,000 BC. it had significant development in the wider Cycladic culture. In modern times, many of the island's caves have served as hideouts for pirates and smugglers from time to time, hence the various names of corms. Fortress of Livadi, a Fortress of Historic Times has been located. The island was home to pirates during the Turkish occupation. In 1646 the island was taken over to the then Archbishopric of Sifnos, together with the islands of Amorgos, Polykandros (today Folegandros), Anafi, Nios (today Ios), Mykonos, Serifos, Sikinos and Astypalaia.
It is the property of the Holy Monastery of Panagia Hazoviotissa of Amorgos. With the permission of the Holy Monastery in 1826, the Amorians were allowed to settle the island.
Attractions of Iraklia
The peak of the Pope, at an altitude of 420 m. It is located in the southern part. From here one can admire the view of all the islands around Heraklion and observe rare bird species.
Livadi Castle: There are ruins of a Hellenistic castle (323 BC - 316 BC). There are also many archaeological finds from the Neolithic era and ruins from the Temple of Zeus and the Temple of the Goddess of Fortune.
The cave of Agios Ioannis with its rich decoration of stalactites and stalagmites. It is the largest cave of the Cyclades with an area of 2000 sq.m. Nearby is a smaller one called the Cyclops Cave.
