You criticized the vocals, but did you take the time to read the lyrics? The vibe that you described was intentional. Were you expecting upbeat vocals on an album about heroin addiction?
weird that for some people including myself this is one of the best and most incredible albums I've ever listened to, has literally left me full of chills and in tears on many occasions, and find the sounds in it to be so beautiful and then this guy is like 'it's kind of an improvement, i still have my reservations ' :/
After 8 years you come to understand he was kinda right. Every Diiv song sounds more or less the same. The vocals have never improved that much. Most of the songs would feel better if they where just instrumentals on an ambient album.
Maybe I'm trippin, but I thought the washed out vocals were one of the great things about DIIV we all liked.. Also, I love the song Bent. Especially the vocals. And I'm especially digging the darker sound. This album is perfect!
I enjoy the vocals on Diiv's albums because I can't always understand them clearly. When I'm swimming underneath the ocean with the whales on psychedelics, like this music makes me feel, I want to be able to dream and travel to other dimensions. Loud vocals in my face wouldn't allow for that type of shamanic journey. Clearly the reviewer was too straight laced to get DIIV!
"Much of the time, the vocals sound like they're just killing time" Dude, that's part of the charm. No other band does it better. You have the wrong expectations.
Dude, Freakthony is right, have you heard the jesus and mary chain, beach fossils and the radio dept.? Vocals doesn't have to be so freaking boring and colorless in an dreamy, indie and shoegazy ambient. Tran-
impersonal vocals? yeah right. the lyrics are some of the most engaging in music, precisely because they discard, or half-discard, the template of pop songwriting. i mean what do you want, pete yorn?
I really think this album is quite stellar. At least and 8.0 for me. Maybe even a 9.0 depending on how it holds up in the background while I paint and draw. I like my shoegaze/dream-pop in the background being all ambient like.
MY opinion is that every diiv song's lyrics are very remember-able for me and the ONLY people that will really relate to the full extant are heroin addicts (like myself). Especially on is the is are, its very apparent that its about the struggles of being in a healthy and strong relationship because heroin makes it distant and destroys it. Its very honest and to the point.
That's what I'm saying. He just kinda took that Beach Fossils formula and made it more dream pop-y instead of the whole Surf vibe that was still trendy when Beach Fossils came out
It is so so good, the texture is so perfect and so intricately designed, they use the effects so carefully and don't just put it there for no reason. They have a nice nod to their influences. I love that usually with bands they use vocals as a hook or memorable idea but with diiv though the vocals are very ethereal and delayed the real melody comes from the guitar and the motifs and their use of motif is perfect. Strong 8.5/9 for me, AOTY (so far)
The whole album is actually about sky Ferreira, the lead singer said that on Twitter. It's actually kinda funny because they broke up after this album was released & I'm surprised they didn't reissue the album without her song on it. UPDATE: I'm actually wondering if the lead singer regrets saying this album is about sky.
Tired of Tomorrow no I literally love sky!!! It's probably my favorite song on the album like I don't even consider it a DIIV song, it's a sky song. My favorite on the album is probably valentine tho, cause that's my fucking jam!
Tired of Tomorrow also they did a lot of Sky DIIV (get it sky dive lol) songs & they talked about it on Sky's live stream for her picture disc vinyl release. I would love to hear those unreleased songs, because blue Boredom wasn't enough for me.
Tyler Lethersin LOL yeah on the album the track name is Blue Boredom (Sky's Song) and I feel the same way, it sounds like it could be on her new record. I really hope Sky has songs that sound alike it when Masochism comes out.
I'm guessing you are not much of a young thug fan but it would be cool to hear your thoughts on his new album "I'm Up". I think it was originally supposed to be Slime Season 3 but the label got their hands involved. I think its a mediocre tape but has enjoyable parts and appreciate that Thug doesn't flinch on his rap style despite legions of haters.
When i was listening to tis LP i feel like i was listening to the follow up to Wild Nothing "Gemini" (instead of the actual follo up of Gemini called "Nocturne")... i do like this album much more than their first album wich i found much repetitive and this is more playful and joyful to dream pop.
Please review Suede "Night Thoughts". UK band with a couple of 90s 5-star albums under their belt - while Bowie-influenced, they're almost in their own genre... I don't ask for much Fantano, it'll be interesting...
I'd give this record an 8.5/10, there are a lot more memorable tracks on this record compared to Oshin but the darker tracks are some of the weakest songs from DIIV like 'Bent (Roi's Song), 'Wasted Breath', and 'Incarnate Devil.' I know Cole was going through a lot of shit during the making of this album and I admire his drive to put all of his emotions onto this LP, but I hope this obsession with going deeper and darker is a one time thing and doesn't become the norm. I think DIIV are at their best when the dreamy, nostalgia-inducing guitar layers take the center stage. Also, I highly recommend seeing them live since the energy they bring boosts each song to the next level, just wish that same energy could be translated on their studio recordings.
Hey anthony, it doesn't have too do with this video in particular, but have you ever watched Sound City? It's a great documentary, made by Dave Grohl, about the old sound city studio, it's really good, guess you would enjoy it
It's shoegaze man, the vocals are meant to be layered underneath the guitar parts.
Amen
Tell that to MBV lol
Why do you hate Shoegaze fantano?
Because he's Notgazethony Rektano
Shoegaze is perfect and should be a religion
+t my dawg
He hates reverb , he's a hater anyway
+Omerus Mortem lack of marijuana supply
I cannot possibly comprehend how you think Bent is the worst tune on the album. As far as I can tell Bent is the best tune DIIV has ever released.
Sianspheric definitely not a bad song by any stretch
The intro guitar riff remains stuck in my head for days on end. Great song, for sure.
definitely not their best song at all, it's too "plucky" imo Cole Smith usually has really clean riff patterns on his studio releases.
I think the hook/chorus is DOPE on that song, but the verse is a little eh.
best song is dust, sooooooooooooorry
He managed to review the Diiv record without mentioning the word shoegaze. Not sure if impressed or horrified.
horrified actually....
This isn't shoegaze
You criticized the vocals, but did you take the time to read the lyrics? The vibe that you described was intentional. Were you expecting upbeat vocals on an album about heroin addiction?
this...
Trust me!!
LOL Oshin is far from "unmemorable"
Earth boy, Sometimes rock
weird that for some people including myself this is one of the best and most incredible albums I've ever listened to, has literally left me full of chills and in tears on many occasions, and find the sounds in it to be so beautiful and then this guy is like 'it's kind of an improvement, i still have my reservations ' :/
Lol 'this guy'
Because Anthony thicctano is a hard ass to music. This review means that the album is actually amazing.
I know it's been 6 years but I feel like this comment sums up watching fantano so well
After 8 years you come to understand he was kinda right. Every Diiv song sounds more or less the same. The vocals have never improved that much. Most of the songs would feel better if they where just instrumentals on an ambient album.
bent (roi's song) is my favourite song on the album i am aNGRY

+Cameron Armstrong spoiler alert >:(
+Cameron Armstrong lmao take my like
+Cameron Armstrong You have a nice face I guess. You're welcome fantananananaman.
+Cameron Armstrong 10/10
Maybe I'm trippin, but I thought the washed out vocals were one of the great things about DIIV we all liked.. Also, I love the song Bent. Especially the vocals. And I'm especially digging the darker sound. This album is perfect!
MrRobertbertbert yeah love the dark atmosphere, probably typical, but lots of parts in the album reminded me of The Cure.
It's a fucking sick album. I accept no criticism of it.
I like it quite a bit, but I think it's a bit too long and samey
@@chrilborn4138 Same
I'm imagining Cal Chuchesta trying to pronounce DIIV
+TheQ D.I.I.V. What's that stand for?
Must be the new year. Fantano's handing out these (201)6/10's like hot cakes
Something really nice.
+Angry Something kind of nice.
+Cooler72222 underrated post
what??? should be a strong 8/weak 9
I agree, a 8
I thought he was gonna completely trash the album, so the 6 was a pleasant surprise.
***** You must be new to this channel
fuck no, and i haven't even listened to it and i know its nowhere near that
I'm feeling a strong 7
Strong Sonic Youth vibes on some songs.
"Much of the time, the vocals sound like they're just killing time"
Dude, that's part of the charm. No other band does it better. You have the wrong expectations.

'It's too Washed Out.'Was that what you meant?
+hiimsmart eh eh
+hiimsmart Nice catch! Very perceptive of you.
impersonal vocals? yeah right. the lyrics are some of the most engaging in music, precisely because they discard, or half-discard, the template of pop songwriting. i mean what do you want, pete yorn?
the vocals on that record are so dope.
I really think this album is quite stellar. At least and 8.0 for me. Maybe even a 9.0 depending on how it holds up in the background while I paint and draw. I like my shoegaze/dream-pop in the background being all ambient like.
I listen to shoegaze and dream pop a lot too and I agree with this interview. A light 6 is perfect for the record. Tran-
+Daniel Aucallanchi -sition
+Ocean Nights did you love it did you hate it? Poopmastertano forever
+creekandseminole What nicely worded and pleasant disagreement comment. I commend you sir or madam. Have a wonderful day.
+creekandseminole I think this album is decent I think it could have been edited down a bit. I'd give it a 7 personally! Going to see them in March!
DIIV saving guitar alt-rock-shoegaze with this record
MY opinion is that every diiv song's lyrics are very remember-able for me and the ONLY people that will really relate to the full extant are heroin addicts (like myself). Especially on is the is are, its very apparent that its about the struggles of being in a healthy and strong relationship because heroin makes it distant and destroys it. Its very honest and to the point.
I'd give this record a 9/10 I loved it!!! It's amazing in my opinion
Bent is such a great song though.
I think that this is the best record of 2016 so far.
Bent (Roi's Song) is to die for
Not gonna lie it kinda hurts to here my favorite band get kind of ragged on like that. But hey we all have our opinions
ITS CALLED SHOEGAZE ANTHONY, GOD.
Every time any band comes out with their 2nd album, you always give them a 6/10. Check your records. It's true.
Every other DIIV song just has the same drum beat as Daydream by Beach Fossils
+Phil Fox such a thought provoking statement, really appreciate a new train of thought in the comment feed, have a great day.
+Phil Fox every rock beat has the snare drum on 2 and 4
+Phil Fox but he wuz in fossils bruh
+Phil Fox That was actually him.
That's what I'm saying. He just kinda took that Beach Fossils formula and made it more dream pop-y instead of the whole Surf vibe that was still trendy when Beach Fossils came out
I think Marx debunked score 6 years ago
What a great reference bro
Metaaaaa
Healthy Moon is so good of a song.
They aren't a duo they are a quintet
Shhhh
+RaccoonSkunkWolf1011 mixed up with Drenge maybe?
+RaccoonSkunkWolf1011 quinto*
They aren't really a quintet. Cole recorded the full thing himself, I'm sure. The band are only live.
+Robbie Broome not fully recorded by himself. But the majority yeah
Are you going to review Deceiver?
0:14 duo?.... DIIV was started by Cole and formed the band, isn’t it? Or am I missing something? Oshin is so freaking beautiful.
Of course he wont like it, because its dreampop and shoegazey ....he doesnt like shoegaze. I love it tho
i think this guy just doesn't get shoegazing
Funny, keep coming back to this record - definitely an album that grows on you and certainly better than a 6/10
Anthony, what do you like best about a girl? Her personality, or her..
Anthony: "@3:49 "
Diivs new album is sooo good
Would love to hear a review of the new DIIV album
"How long have you known" had great vocals
The whole album is actually about sky Ferreira, the lead singer said that on Twitter. It's actually kinda funny because they broke up after this album was released & I'm surprised they didn't reissue the album without her song on it.
UPDATE: I'm actually wondering if the lead singer regrets saying this album is about sky.
Tyler Lethersin her vocals on blue boredom were fucking amazing. like even if they broke up, it was a neat collab.

Let's get a Deftones track review! Prayers/Triangles!
Do the new album.... Do the new album....... Do the new album.
I wish he'd post the names of the records he puts up in the back
The guitars remind me a bit of what came off of Wild Nothing's "Nocturne" album, only much more interesting.
Valentine is the best song in this album
I enjoyed this record a lot more than oshin, the guitar work is stellar.
This guy just wants shit to sound how he wants it to sound.
I know of Diiv. They are from New York. They may have mentioned it a few times.
Joseph Hall all the time, lol
I'm guessing you are not much of a young thug fan but it would be cool to hear your thoughts on his new album "I'm Up". I think it was originally supposed to be Slime Season 3 but the label got their hands involved. I think its a mediocre tape but has enjoyable parts and appreciate that Thug doesn't flinch on his rap style despite legions of haters.
Florist - The Birds Outside Sang or Toothgrinder - Nocturnal Masquerade?
antee can you pls bring back the "forever" little tune that used to play at the end? :(
Review the Rand Paul mixtape

+Oban SMH 👌
Gotta love the Chris Christie diss track
Question for you Anthony, what bands have you never heard of?
+Milo Vegas Actually, it's a question for everybody.
+Milo Vegas I don't know I never heard of them yet
Probably mystic braves
Please review the Sunflower Bean debut LP "Human Ceremony", just came out today
You don't even have to do album reviews anymore we already know it will be a 6
Expecting more 9's albums released in 2019
Dopamine and Out of sight are the best on this album IMO.
Thought it was pretty good. Also gave me a bit of a sonic youth feel on some tracks.
don't understand how you don't like SHOEGAZE BRUH
Everyone hears music differently
What did he just say about Oshin ?
When i was listening to tis LP i feel like i was listening to the follow up to Wild Nothing "Gemini" (instead of the actual follo up of Gemini called "Nocturne")... i do like this album much more than their first album wich i found much repetitive and this is more playful and joyful to dream pop.
healthy moon was my fav
So Deceiver didn't get a review?
In his yunoreview
Think this deserved a 7, even after hearing the review.
Please review Suede "Night Thoughts". UK band with a couple of 90s 5-star albums under their belt - while Bowie-influenced, they're almost in their own genre... I don't ask for much Fantano, it'll be interesting...
IMO, peak DIIV.
i saw them live last weekend, they were pretty enjoyable. i mean they got really into it and i really enjoyed the set but the crowd was just dead
What did you think of the new ulver?
Cal and I could be two straight lines in a crooked world.
Don't know if you've ever heard this album, but:
Zu - Carboniferous
Strangely reminds me of Slint's Spiderland, but much, much heavier.
What are the albums on his shelf? specifically the one with the woman on the cover
Chelsea Wolfe - Apokolypsis
And it's scheduled to be released tomorrow. Damn Anthony, you ARE the busiest!
Spooky pixels! On the spooky ablum art! AHHHH!!
PLS review the new Say Anything record. It's crazy experimental (for them at least) and I'm digging an SA album for the first time since 2009
Review Say Anything's new album "I Don't Think It Is" pleeeease
Are ya gonna do the new DIIV album?
The newest Say Anything record is streaming on their site and will be released in a couple of days. It would be great if you could review that one!
Death Grips post 4 minutes of white noise, "I give it a light 9"
Prayers/Triangles - Deftones track review please.
I'm blown away that you even SLIGHTLY enjoyed this....
I'd give this record an 8.5/10, there are a lot more memorable tracks on this record compared to Oshin but the darker tracks are some of the weakest songs from DIIV like 'Bent (Roi's Song), 'Wasted Breath', and 'Incarnate Devil.' jarbear89 those 3 songs are the best on the album lmao
What's the album in the background on the right?
Hey anthony, it doesn't have too do with this video in particular, but have you ever watched Sound City? It's a great documentary, made by Dave Grohl, about the old sound city studio, it's really good, guess you would enjoy it
anthony,
whats the album behind you next to chelsea wolfe?
Basement - Promise Everything. Let's go Fantango
Hey Anthony, Deftones are dropping a new song sometime today from their new album due out in April. You should check it out.
Their doggy cover from 2009 or 10 was better than the entire album
how is cal doing
How did Fantano not review anything from The Heavy?!
When are you going to review Björk's Homogenic in your "flawless classics" section?
What's the album on the right in the back?
Feb 5, don't forget to revie the new Field Music album and the debut Sunflower Bean album, both gooood. Tnx Indieny Freaktano
