  • Hey friends, three weeks ago we went to Ethiopia to shoot a video about Abuna Yemata. On the last day we were there we did a little tourism ourselves and went to Mariam Korkor and Daniel Korkor. Two churches that our guide told us were from the 4th and 6th centuries.
    If you ever took art history you may have seen some images of the frescos in these churches.
    These churches are built into cliffs, thousands of meters high, and can be quite dangerous to get to. We hope you enjoy our mini docmunentary about these rock-hewn churches in Tigray, Ethiopia.

      I believe during that time Tigray was under intense war therefore they created the church so outside forces couldn’t penetrate it. I’m not too familiar with the history but I believe I’m pretty close

    This is one real prove that Ethiopia was one of the pioneers of Judeo Christianity. Some western people think that Ethiopia is like any other African countries and they try to spread Christianity by sending missioners. Ethiopians can teach the real authentic christianity to western people not vise-versa.

      I have recently discovered that Early Christians observed the Sabbath day on Saturday and gathered for the Eucharist on Sunday or the Lord's day. The Romans banned the observance of the Sabbath day during the Council of Laodicea, but the Ethiopians have continued this tradition until this day.

      @@Jerônimo_de_Estridão Constitutions of the Apostles, Book VIII,
      "XXXIII. I Peter and Paul do make the following constitutions. Let the slaves work five days;
      but on the Sabbath-day and the Lord’s day let them have leisure to go to church for instruction in
      piety. We have said that the Sabbath is on account of the creation, and the Lord’s day of the
      resurrection. Let slaves rest from their work all the great week, and that which follows it-for the
      one in memory of the passion, and the other of the resurrection; and there is need they should be
      instructed who it is that suffered and rose again, and who it is permitted Him to suffer, and raised
      Him again..."
      The Bible declares that Jesus was crucified the day before the Sabbath day.
      Mark 15:42 "And now when the even was come, because it was the apreparation, that is, the day before the sabbath..."
      Jesus was resurrected on the third day(Sunday), the day after the Sabbath. Hence it became known as the Lord's day. This is made very clear by a great many pre-Nicene literature that has survived to this day. They clearly refer to the Sabbath day and the Lord's day as twp separate days.
      Over three hundred years later, the Council of Laodicea outlawed the observance of the Sabbath day because it was considered a Jewish custom, and Jews were not very popular in those days.
      Council Of Laodicea, Synod of Laodiceea, AD 365.
      Canon 29 "Christians must not judaize by resting on the Sabbath, but must work on that day, rather honouring the Lord's Day; and, if they can, resting then as Christians. But if any shall be found to be judaizers, let them be anathema from Christ."
      Even in this canon they differentiate between the Lord's day (Sunday) and the Sabbath day(saturday).

      @@bekimbal9658 Thank you for the info you put here. To add a bit, The council of Laodicea is just a local council, it wasn't an ecumenical council and Ethiopian orthodox church only accepts cannons from the first 3 ecumenical councils. So The Church has kept the early books and traditions as they are and still observe the Sabbath day.

    About five years ago the word "dahlia" kept popping up around me. I researched to find that Dahlia were first cultivated in Europe at the Holland House Gardens. I circum-romanced a line from the Kensington Rune Stone in Kensington, MN to Holland House Gardens at Kensington Palace. Out of curiosity I extended the line and it ran through Tsion, Aksum, Ethiopia home of the Ark of the Covenant Church, and Church of Our Lady Mary of Zion. Co-Incidents?

    I haven't visited these two churches, but when I went to visit family in 2017, I visited another two churches deep in the gorge in central Ethiopia. Those two churches are the opposite of the above. You go down the mountain to the lowest part of the gorge. It was a scary decent, I really don't understand why ancient Ethiopians built churches in some of the most inaccessible places.

    • @jklovett
      @jklovett  5 лет назад +7

      It was definitely kind of hard to get to. We heard they built them in hard to get places because they wanted to keep them from armies that would come through and destroy them, so they wanted them to be hidden.

    • @ethnow1562
      @ethnow1562 5 лет назад +2

      They used to do that because at those times they Ethiopian Christians had a lot of enemies around them who want to destroy Christianity like the middle east Muslims and the British Catholics, and other reasons I can’t explain in English

    J & K. thank you for sharing this experience. What an adventure. At my age there is no way i could have done that hike and in that heat. Might have in my younger days. Very impressive. now i want to research this church. Mind blowing to conceive it was built 1600 hundred years ago!!. Makes me wonder why it is inaccessible for the average tourist or pilgrim. Wonder if the Ethiopian government made this decision or if they were involved at all. maybe it is part of preserving them. the only disappointment in the film for me is when the guide is talking at 8:35. You choose to edit in some nice hang pan music. i would have liked to hear what he was saying. it seemed like he was talking about the frescoes. Other than that thanks for bringing your journey into the privacy and comfort of my laptop
