While NJ doesn't have any major cities, all of its towns are bordered by several other towns. Most other states (like Massachusetts) have major cities but theres lots of empty space between them. Or maybe the towns in those states have another nearby town in one direction but not in all directions.
New Jersey is the only state in the country where you can feel like you’ve gone to completely different states when in reality you only drove to the next county. Seriously, you can go from the big cities close to Philly or New York to out in the middle of nowhere country where there’s nothing but small towns, mountains, forests, and rivers without ever leaving the state.
Yesterday I went with my sister-in-law down to Tom’s River with her kids and I felt like I was in Georgia for a minute. The ONLY time I ever went to south Jersey is Atlantic City, Wildwood and Cape May. So yeah I was gonna type but you articulated it first haha.
This video was about a very small part of New Jersey in the area across the river from New York. 50% of our population lives in that area while the other 50% is spread out around the whole rest of the state. If you drive an hour away from Newark in any direction you will see farms, forests or marsh land. We are called the garden state for a reason.

People know NJ is close to NY but I don’t think people realize just how super close NJ is to NYC. I live in North Jersey just a block from the Hudson and the city is just a few minutes away. Huge for people who want the benefits of NY without the trash living situations.
unfortunately, plenty of Jersey-ites find themselves commuting into the trash situation everyday. My town is booming, just so they can lure commuters to live there and commute via public transit options.
@abandonedhistoryUS it's not strictly my town, but I'm referring to Hackensack. They re-built the main ave, and the tax incentives allowed for all manner of renovation and new construction. The thing is, in a short while, the influx of residents are going to choke the limited space and resources. By the time the tax incentives expire, the present city officials will have been retired, and it'll be somebody else's problem.
I never realized this wasn’t common knowledge until the Ms. Marvel show on Disney+. I had to explain to someone why you could see the Freedom Tower from Jersey City.

Having lived in NJ for decades, I agree property taxes are very high. However, when I moved to Virginia, I found out that NJ's property taxes also covered a lot more services than the lower property taxes here. Services like sewage/water treatment, trash collection, fall leaf collection, recycling and use of the community pools, tennis courts, etc. are all extra cost services which were included in my NJ property taxes. On top of it, my county imposed a personal property tax on cars, so while my auto insurance is half of what it was in NJ, the car tax takes up the savings. Plus, Virginia has a "grocery tax" and sales tax on clothing, unlike NJ as well as an income tax that kicks you into the highest bracket at $17000 (in NJ you have to hit $75,000 before you are charged a rate higher than Virginia). What I am finding is that other states make up their revenues in many hidden ways.
Actually as of this year (2023) Oregon residents can now pump their own gas. Making Jersey the only state where it isn't allowed. Thank you for the comment though Deyoung.
I'm from the Netherlands and I lived in New Jersey for 20 years. I loved it, it's definitely one of the nicest places I've ever been. The cost of living is awful though, I ended up going back to the Netherlands because I would never have been able to retire in NJ.
I was born and raised in central NJ. I now live in the Midwest. I will admit, NJ had plenty to do and there were some nice places to go, especially in Northwest NJ. Lots of farms and I had the beaches. However, after living in the Midwest, I don't think I could ever go back and live. Very expensive. The one thing that always stuck out was the cost of auto insurance. It was crazy expensive. But that wouldn't stop me from living there. Where I live now, I enjoy no traffic, clean air and cheap auto insurance. But I'll always cherish the days I did live in NJ.

It's crazy how many people think there's a New Jersey accent. They just don't realize that the people in New Jersey with that accent came from Staten Island.
What’s crazy is you cannot develop in 22 percent of the state because it’s protected open space ( the pine lands) but if you could another 500 k people would live here minimally. Also if Staten Island were part of New Jersey which it should be because it’s touching New Jersey the state would have an extra million people minimum.
I know this video isn't about why people move to NJ, but if you ever make a video about that, it will be worth mentioning the high immigrant population and communities, which attracts more immigrants (including me!).
That's a great idea, I am going to try and chat with locals more when planning out future videos to get this kind of insight that often falls out of research. I will eventually make a video on why people move to and out of New Jersey, so this is a great bit of information.
yea it really is awful so many people have moved here, especially during/ after the pandemic. its getting so crowded. the most annoying part is all new drivers. our state used to be known for the most savage drivers in the country after nyc, doing 80-90 on the highway used to be standard. now you have to cut up and swerve around in the right two lanes just to maintain 80 half the time. so many city people or immigrants that never drove before, sitting in the left lane in huge suvs doing exactly the speed limit. people will literally cause traffic jams for no reason, i see people slow down to like 30 just to go around a bend in the highway or cause the sun i shining in their direction. its disgusting honestly.
I grew up in South Jersey and but can’t afford to buy a house in a decent area in Jersey. The property taxes are needlessly suffocating. Each township insists on having its own municipal services instead of combining and sharing costs with neighboring towns. So many ancillary add-ons that chip away at your take home pay. Insuring your car is ridiculously expensive here due to the average Jersey driver’s inability to drive calmly. Every public roadway in the state is treated like a racetrack and you’re just expected to move over to let these beat up altimas and lime green mustangs through. We should also be able to pump our own gas by now- attendants don’t always come up and help when you pull into a gas station. Sometimes the lights are on but no one comes out for 5 minutes and you have to go find another one. Biggest issue is the amount of stroads spread across the state. Despite being densely populated, hardly anything is walkable or bikeable. You get 6 lane “pikes” with concrete half walls running down the median, and jughandles any time you want to make a left. Good bakeries though.
@@DrewDienno I have to agree with you. I was born and raised in NJ. However, I now live in the Midwest. I would not have ever been able to own a house if I stayed there. Always lived in Apts. Now I own a home, no traffic, fresh air, and my car insurance is $35 a month.
dude idk bout you but, when it's late night some gas stations be on but, no attendant and you can just pull up n use your card to purchase and fill your own gas and I never have had or seen someone have an issue in a situation like that and dang i even done it mid day at Wawa saw the attendant was swarmed with cars got out told him imma just pump it to make it quicker n no issues; 20+ years of doing it too.
I Love New Jersey! After all the Nazi airship Hindenburg burst into flames right here in the Garden State over Lakehurst, New Jersey, on May 6, 1937 & the greatest rock and roll band Led Zeppelin extracted its name out of this infamous New Jersey disaster & became (sorry Hindenburg) world famous band bigger maybe than the Hindenburg disaster itself. Did I mentioned the Albanians? Also many blond Albanians love to call New Jersey a home for over a century (maybe 2 centuries) now.
In NJ, there’s no sales tax on unprepared food (from grocery stores), paper products, clothing & shoes. It doesn’t make up for high local taxes, but for the most part it’s a great place to live. I lived in NJ as a kid and then moved to WI with my mom and came back for college, met my husband & stayed. Is it expensive, yes, but so much of that has to do with higher salaries in the area & NYC. No one talks about the high cost of living in CT or Long Island! There’s a lot of diversity, great food and a wide range of activities, the beach, mountains, rivers and farms.
Simple answer is proximity to several major US cities. You have New York City to the north, Philadelphia to the west, and Baltimore/ Washington DC to the south all within reasonable commute depending on where you live in the state. (Baltimore and DC are a little far but still a drivable distance). You get all of that, plus one of the best beach access on the east coast. Atlantic City, wildwood, Ocean City, Cape May etc. all the east coast states have beaches but the NJ shore is one of the most popular destinations outside of Miami and Myrtle Beach since we have Atlantic City which is a diet Las Vegas. AC is full of casinos and you have the most famous boardwalk in the world. NJ has a lot to offer. Plus you have some really famous colleges like Princeton, Rutgers, Stevens etc. the biggest rollercoaster in the world is in NJ at Six Flags Great Adventure. NJ just has so much to offer in such a small space compared to other states, like Pennsylvania, where it’s just 2 pockets of civilization and then nothing inbetween. Like seriously, what do you do if you live in central PA? Central NJ is farm land but it’s still within driving distance of the Jersey shore and major cities. Central PA is at least 3-4 hours away from either Pittsburgh or Philadelphia.
I live in Pittsburgh and I can drive to Columbus, Cleveland, Washington DC, Lancaster, Toronto, and I admit that driving to Philly and Chicago was doable for the long weekend.
In regards to property taxes in New Jersey, as someone who lives there, it depends on where you live, as some places can have property taxes as low as $560 every quarter versus $2000 every quarter and being about an hour apart driving distance
Should have named this video "Why everybody lives in NORTH Jersey". Seemed like you completely ignored anything about South Jersey and the Pinelands. #PorkRoll
I was focused on why 95% of Jersey residents live in urban cores, and why it's the state with the highest population density by far. I am going to make future videos that look at different aspects of cities and states that I am covering now, you can't do anything justice in 5-10 minutes, but perhaps looking at a state or city from multiple angles can.
@@bryanperry thank you Bryan Perry, I really want to do a whole series looking at the underrated portions of US states; or just one really big video looking at the underrated portions of all the biggest states. Because your right in saying that important places often get unfairly left out of the conversation.
New Jersey born and raised and go figure I'm one of the 5% that live in a rural area. There's a nearby city of about 4,000 people but other that there's just a bunch of farmland and scenic routes around it.
Woodbridge, NJ is seeing a lot of investment from deveolpers because people are leaving NY to come to NJ but since we are on the North East Coast Line people are moving to NJ while still working in NY
First state with casinos outside of Las Vegas: Atlantic City, located in New Jersey, became the first city outside Nevada to legalize casinos in 1976, turning it into a major gambling hub on the East Coast.
North Jersey is the ONLY place on Earth that has a sufficient number of running tracks for seniors.Every place else on the planet has tracks attached to high schools and colleges both of which are guarded and locked 24/7.
Our food is also great, particularly pizza and bagels. Some say it’s the mineral content of the water, other says it’s because of the high competition. Your business won’t last if you don’t make amazing pizza or bagels because there’s probably someone in the same plaza who does. End result is our notoriously delicious doughs.
My state well not relly but i have a lot of family members in this state since the 50 during the great puertorrican migration to the states. So this state relly have some space in my heart. I always look to learn more about it.
I live in Warren County NJ and its rural but not like deep south hillybilly type of place. Its nice and there is no crime and mountains and hills, lots of lakes and rivers and good schools, police and hospitals. And its an hour to NYC. The taxes are the bad part.
I Know You Already Did a California Video. But Can you Do One About the Not as Popular Underrated California Central Valley, Sacramento, Redding, Fresno, Bakersfield and Other Cities. Just an Idea for a Future Video
That's a great idea Sweet, also one of the reasons I focus on a central theme and keep videos relatively short is because I fully intend to make multiple videos about some states (maybe even cities). Because a single 5-8 minute video about one facet simply of a city/state isn't enough and there are so many other perspectives I want to look at, especially for a huge state like California.
What a beautiful state. I am doing an English work about this State and it seems a nice place to live. I hope one day i can walk in those beaches and see some victorian houses.

I escaped Bergen County decades ago because I knew it would only get punitively expensive. The rather nice home my father bought in Rutherford for about 60K in the 1960s became such a tax burden he cashed out moving to Virginia. NJ properties hold value but they also are a major cash sink for the decades of paying them off. OTOH I can live very comfortably on six acres in SC and half my NET income is discretionary.
At somebody who lives in New Jersey I have to counter your enthusiasm with one question and that would be if New Jersey is such a great state then why do so many people want to move out more than half of the States population when pulled by our local news station News 12 New Jersey said that 42% of them would stay in the state the other 58 would move out of the state
The point of my video wasn't that New Jersey is a great state, I spent considerable time talking about the awful taxes and childcare costs there. I just wanted to explain why Jersey has so many residents for such a tiny state, while looking at the states economy and history to provide some background. Thank you for the comment though Lucky, and I am well aware of New Jersey's numerous shortfalls.
Am not even from jersey and I can tell you that When it comes to convenience, New York is yall only competition. Jersey is miles ahead of half of America
New Jersey constitutes a crowded trash heap. The state feels akin to a parking lot. I would never recommend moving there unless your career demands residence in New Jersey.
i dont know too many people commuting from new jersey to boston...or DC. would of done better to use philly and wilimgton as the major cities next to NJ instead. aside from that some of the best hosptials are split between philly and NYC so ur always close to one, and the public schools have a lot of money to ensure the kids get good educations. I think thats more why people live there.
I was just talking about big cities with proximity, I did mention NYC multiple times. States benefit, not so much from the commuting; but the proximity in general. Region economic activity can be pushed significantly by just a couple of mega cities like NYC DC Boston Philly and so on.
@@SomethingDifferentFilms yea i saw the NYC mentions and left those out of that post. was more saying replace the boston and DC mentions with wilimgton and philly.
@@marxula555especially Philadelphia. Lots of people from the Philadelphia metro area, and South Jersey area commute across the PA/NJ border on a regular basis. For example, I myself, live in Pennsylvania (outside of Philadelphia) and commute to New Jersey for work.
The joke I always make is that you only pay tolls to cross the bridges out of the state. No one can afford to leave. Kidding of course. As a life long resident of various parts of NJ, there is plenty to do in the old Garden State. Best food in the country with a very diverse array of choices (NJ is the most diverse state by most metrics). Also, for good measure, better pizza and bagels than NYC. I will die on that hill. The "amenities" of places like Philly and New York are really just things like the big famous museums, or dumb touristy photos (for the record, the Statue of Liberty is in NJ, just look at a map and go to Liberty State Park in Jersey City if you want to see why). If you live in South Brooklyn, it's going to take you an hour to get to Museum of Natural HIstory. If you live in Newark, it will take you 40 minutes. But if you don't want to do that, you can just go to the Newark Museum, which has a lot to offer. Want to go to the Metropolitan Museum of Art? Try the Princeton Art Museum and Zimmerli Museum in New Brunswick first. Even New Jerseyans don't often recognize how much there is here.
NJ also had so much industry, it’s basically like a rust belt state that was able to survive the death of the American industry. Trenton Makes the world takes
The problem is that we are a sanctuary city with high taxes like NYC but, no news coverage. We could be in the Guinness World Record for the 600 school districts per sq. mi or population! NJ is not business-friendly too many regulations & mandates so job growth is less.
Just hard to find reasons to leave the state right now, the only thing I haven’t been liking is the increasing population and higher traffic congestion. And yea the taxes but that’s everywhere in northeast. I very much like the quieter and simpler living in this state compared to our neighbors
That opening shot of the Christmas Gallery and the old Castaway Cove ship in Ocean City makes me sad. The Christmas Gallery was replaced with stupid Cinnabon shop and the ship burned down a few years ago
Unfortunately, they got the same problem. The whole country has. Just white collar workers and service people, nothing in between most of the manufacturing is gone, so until you address high oil prices and bring it back, manufacturing every place sucks.
Only in some select towns where it is 3½% like Camden or Perth Amboy where the low sales tax isn't worth the danger, else where it's 7½% which is about average

I think New Jersey has a better living standard than any other state in the union. Groceries and health care are cheaper, the residents are friendlier, and the climate is much more agreeable than in NYC.
This video left out the whole rest of the state. if you go 45 minutes away from Newark it's like being on another planet, and most of the state is like that. We are the garden state for a reason
In 2023, Metuchen, NJ's Main Street was rated number 1 in the country. It's 100% walkable and a great place to live. It even has two robotics teams in its 2.9 square miles. I love it. Everybody does live in NJ. It's the most diverse state in the union. Metuchen is dead center in the largest South Asian population in the Americas. Want some South Asian food? Sure, what kind. Mumbai? Chennai? North? South? East? West? Inquiring minds want to know? Fancy something else? Fancy Geek, Turkish, or high end Mexican? Let's hop on a bus and ride to Highland Park. Casual Mexican, Hispanic, or Ethiopian? Mosey on over to the train station and take a 10 minute ride to New Brunswick. A great cup of coffee, some pizza followed by the best Italian ices in the state? Main Street is thataway! If you'd rather, we can get some Korean takeout at Latte Market, roughly the same distance away. When its time to leave -- we'll miss you -- the train will take youO to Newark Airport (EWR) faster and more conveniently than a car. If you prefer rail, Amtrak stops at Metro Park, Trenton, and Newark, all accessible by local trains. If you want a leisurely trip, ride NJ Transit and SEPTA to Philly dirt cheap. Also, train is the fastest way to Manhattan for little more than the bridge or tunnel toll. On the downside, houses, taxes, and auto insurance are expensive. New Jersey's good public transit and Metuchen's walkability on the other hand lowers the need to drive. We got along just fine without a car for 14 years, which put 70,000 in our pockets, and many families do just fine with one car. So there it is. You pays your money (and oh, do you) and takes your choice. Heaven help me, I've fallen in love with this goofy state, and here I'll stay. Thank you for finding the good in us. Keep 'em coming.
Can confirm, car theft is HUGE issue here. People are so comfortable in our suburbs that they just leave their keys in the car. I don’t get it but here we are 😅

Great observation; depends on which side of I-195 you're on.

Thanks for a great video!
And with the immigrants populations come some amazing food
Very true. Especially in North Jersey, we are a melting pot of cultures and you can experience different cultures and cuisines every other few blocks.
Hey!! I’m a child of immigrants, my parents came to the city I live in due to the Ecuadorian community here, which helped them feel at home
yea it really is awful so many people have moved here, especially during/ after the pandemic. its getting so crowded. the most annoying part is all new drivers. our state used to be known for the most savage drivers in the country after nyc, doing 80-90 on the highway used to be standard. now you have to cut up and swerve around in the right two lanes just to maintain 80 half the time. so many city people or immigrants that never drove before, sitting in the left lane in huge suvs doing exactly the speed limit. people will literally cause traffic jams for no reason, i see people slow down to like 30 just to go around a bend in the highway or cause the sun i shining in their direction. its disgusting honestly.
Not many left though.
As a New Jerseyian, also note that New Jersey is always in the top 5 number of states losing residents yearly to Virginia, the Carolinas and Florida.

Many states only have a single major point of civilization, if you don’t live near there it can be tough on a lot of people.
I love going to NJ from NYC. Its a beautiful state
Should have named this video "Why everybody lives in NORTH Jersey".

That's the truth everywhere these days though. At least in NJ properties in good parts hold their value.

It’s not bad here. Weather is inconsistent but things could be worse.

Unfortunately, they got the same problem. The whole country has. Just white collar workers and service people, nothing in between most of the manufacturing is gone, so until you address high oil prices and bring it back, manufacturing every place sucks.
New Jersey has one of the lowest SALES TAX rate in the country
And highest property tax. Congrats on saving pennys
Only in some select towns where it is 3½% like Camden or Perth Amboy where the low sales tax isn't worth the danger, else where it's 7½% which is about average

I don’t get it but here we are 😅
Metropolitan populations should be considered here. Not just city populations, as those are bad measures of a city’s true size
1:37 is a great example of Census estimates being wrong. The large jump is an actual Census correcting 10 years of low estimates. The jump is an illusion.
I'm so confused. NJ is the only state where you can't pump your own gas? Then what's going on in Oregon? We can't pump our gas either...
How the hell is it I live all the way across the country from you and I KNOW your state passed legislation this year that YOU are going to be pumping your own gas ? Do you people get ANY news as to what goes on in your states legislation sessions ? How about T.V. news ?
