I am so glad I don't live in a place that is freezing. I think I would go play hockey vs surf when its that cold. or stay home and write music. That is some serious dedication surfing when it is below 32 degrees. I complain when the water gets in the high 50's.

Hey Ben! I usualy surfs in the same cold conditions in Ukraine. And surf sessions often accompanied by the wind. So, I covered face with the vaseline that you can buy at pharmacy/drugstore.
    1) its completely safe
    2) skin on your face is protected from the wind
    3) helps you stay longer in the water
    4) face will not be chapped after session
Works well for me from year to year.

I surfed several hours in 44 degree water, air temp in the low 30s with sleet hitting me in the face with just a 3/2 wetsuit and 3 mm booties. I was purple and frozen when I got out of the water. I was so cold all day. But the surf was head high with offshore winds with long lines peeling on the outside sandbar. What we will put our bodies through for waves. It was well worth it. Surfing perfect waves with no one else out (every wave for me). Yeewwww!!!! Now I live in southern Florida and I think 60 degrees is cold.

You really use those rubber mouth mounts, ben? Try a solid plastic one, the rubber ones bounce so much in your mouth while you're surfing and they dont last anything at all, they break apart so easily. Try the solid ones and see how more stabilized the footage can get

    • @BenGravyy

In my opinion they all work the same it's just a matter of if you have a good grip on them when you drop in. If it's in a bad spot it'll wobble if it's in a good spot it's steady

Definitely good information Ben. My tip for cold water surfing is don’t. Head South instead. My experience taught me that no matter how great the waves can get, I’m far happier when not shivering and not climbing in and out of a soggy cold wetsuit. I always found it difficult to move properly in the water too. Wetsuits weren’t as good in the late sixties as they are today. A probable factor. The coffee thermos idea resonated. Me too. My father still keeps a picture of me in full cold weather surf gear standing on a snowy VA Beach in 1969. Have you ever seen those old school yellow dry suits? They were horrible, I nearly drowned in one after a gnarly wipeout in storm surf years ago. They probably only live in museums these days. I’m in total awe of your enthusiasm and dedication. “Yew!” Thanks for the video.

I'm gonna comment while Lenny waxes prophetic and take this time to poor a glass of Dom Perignon. Just kidding, I haven't had a drink in twenty one years. Best decision I ever made. I'm gonna share a surf hack with you all. Fill a gallon container with hot tap water and wrap it in a towel. like a hot shower when you get out.

I had a question regarding leg cramps. Towards the end my sessions about an hour or two in I'll get these debilitating calf cramps. Stretching in between each wave seems to help a lot as does pounding a half liter of water before jumping in. Im 26 and in pretty good shape (could make more of an effort to stretch more in my off time). Any other tips??
