The rewind AFO is using is a modified version from the doctor. That would likely account for the difference in how it works from Eri using it on Deku.
When he said his dark side is affect him, he's referring to his other self in Shiggy. They are linked by the quirk, by the vestige. Shigaraki's anger is bleeding over and affecting his personality.
Mechia is someone AFO likely kidnapped and turned into his pet over time. He has several quirks (7 to be exact) which reduced his capacity for complex thought. It's pretty terrible.

This episode, Shigaraki breaking free and Nagant coming back are all situations AFO thought he had full control over that ended up backfiring on him. He manipulated and left Nagant for dead. She blows off his hands. He manipulated Shigaraki for his plans. Shigaraki rebels. He intentionally left Machia behind to "teach Tomura the pain of loss". Machia throws a mountain at him. Machia is also one of the few able to handle multiple quirks without modification(OFA and AFO not included) and is now the only other person aside from Deku to resist brainwashing. He's got that dog in him. Literally.
We also see how much of a crutch Shigaraki's hatred is for AFO. He needs his hatred to theoretically be able to steal OFA. And now that same hatred is actually making AFO's quirks stronger as he gets younger. AFO likes to say that Shigaraki is just the other him and that he's the one actually running things. But a huge chunk of AFO's plan and him being able to basically one shot everyone at Gunga is BECAUSE of Shigaraki's immense hate.
Not only that; AFO only has the rewind because of Shigaraki defeating Chisaki. Kurogiri only truly comeback because of Shirakumo nature of protecting and Spinner wish to help his friends (notice how AFO wanted Kurogiri to go to Gunga Villa, but he went to Shigaraki) . Toga rampage is a fruit of the care the League has for each other. Pratically every vantage AFO has is much more because of Shigaraki himself and the companions Shiggy had than his "demon lord all knowing"status.
Reminder that during the last war, Spinner (and based on his reaction to AFO cold logic, also shigaraki) was ready to keep fighting and not leave Machia and Toga.... Shigaraki would not leave Machia.
@@pedrodiogo4636 To be fair even if they kept fighting in the last war they would've been fucked, Shigaraki was about to crumble into pieces and Spinner isn't exactly top of the line fighting potential.
The speed of rewind increased during season 4 as the fight progressed. Deku realised it was outspeeding his injury rate.
This bootleg rewind is reacting to the damage he is taking in order to address it and going overboard- as it is uncontrolled. That's my perspective.

The Rewind will rewind you from your previous state, which is why Midoriya would break limbs to then be healed to keep her power stable. But remember, Eri was also trying to prevent her power from overflowing and erasing Deku as well. AFO can turn it on, but he can't turn it off. So that's why even if he's injured, he'll keep being turned into a "perfect body kid". Which is also why AFO is so emotional now, ironically! Think about it, he's going through ass backwards puberty, so his control is shortened but his potential is spiking. He literally doesn't have the brain of a mature adult, just an angst edgy teen. Casual Mineta W, btw! Anyone else love his secret arc from "normal scared teenager" to "Staring down the Demon Lord"?
