Yea how I felt at time too. Shift focus from 4 to 2 to narrow focus and make it better, add in a darker story to bring both spideys together. Was a solid idea for game in grand scheme.
This game had a fast development time, I think 6 months or 1 year (I can't remember) because they were forced to make it as fast as possible by Activision. They were originally gonna make Shattered Dimensions 2 but didn't have enough time. Ironic with the time theme with Edge of Time.
@@MadDragonifyeah Beenox been pretty under pressure, I wonder how good of a spiderman game they could made if they had 3 years development time or even 4
Still in my top 5 Spider-man Games. Great dialogue, interesting level design, and 2 distinct spidermen. If only it wasn't so undermined by Shattered Dimensions, I feel like people would've appreciated it more...
I liked the story of edge of time but the gameplay itself just felt super repetitive, by the time I got just like halfway through I was already getting pretty bored with the combat personally. And I hated the level design, how linear it was and samey a lot of the levels looked
Edge of Time is one of the top 3 Spider-Man games of mine. The story I loved, and the art style in the cinematics is still SO BEAUTIFUL. This and Shattered Dimensions are actually the reasons for Spider-Men (comic) and those branching multiversal crossovers, so they deserve even more praise for that ALONE. All in all, this would've been SO MUCH BETTER as a graphic novel instead of a game, the story has so much potential and the artwork is SO fantastic
This game has my hands down favorite incarnation of Peter's classic red and blue suit. The asymmetrical web patterns look like actual spiderwebs covering the red parts of the suit.
I think part of the reason the game is as fun as it is is because of the dialogue between Peter and Miguel. The dialogue was written by comic legend Peter David and I think the dialogue shows his love for the characters. He actually created Spider-Man 2099 and wrote the title for ages.
I played that game like 15 years ago, and maybe it's because I still was a little kid, but the memory I got of the game is really fond. I begged my parents to get me one copy but at the end I could only rent one at the Blockbuster when it was still a thing and I liked it . . . even more than Shatter Dimensions XS
Beenox wanted the game out ASAP, so the development time for it was only a year and a half. The original pitch and ideas for the game were much bigger in scope. The channel “ Always Nerdy” did a 90 minute video on the behind the scenes creation of the game and he even interviewed one of project director. Check it out. His videos are extremely informative and fun
I will always say this, gaming communities expect TOO MUCH for every new game entry. Yeah, Edge of Time came after Shattered Dimensions but why stupidily think every new SM game after would have more playable Spider-Men...that ridiculous. Plus not every new Spider-Man game or games in general needs to be like the last or add more. Just like how fans are crying about Insomniac not adding harder swinging mechanics...like dude the swinging mechanics we have bow is great. Why change that isnt broken
I thoroughly enjoyed this game. Yea swinging limited being mostly indoors, combat can get repetive, but felt like the story was pretty interesting and ambitious at the time. Wasn’t worth going for 100% completion but was def a solid game. 2099 had best some good representation in it too I felt. Liked his trademark free fall sections returning again, like watching his character arc. Still hits me as most memorable thing was when they get swapped in each others universes Parker begs him to help MJ and he doesn’t really wanna cause it’d have nothing to do fixing the timeline but he ends realizing she’s means a lot to him and just maybe it does so you save her and he has a little conversation with her carrying her to safety. O’Hara was done very well and I loved him more by end of it and he was a spidey I didn’t know much on prior to the game.
I didn’t know this game had a bad rep. I played it when it came out and I remember really liking it. The atrocity boss fight brought me right back to monster Ock from the ps1 Spider-Man.
The fact that we got any good Spider-Man games during the late 2000's/early 2010's is kind of shocking if you think about it. After the Raimi game trilogy has finished, Activision was seriously trying to make Spider-Man games a yearly release. Friend of Foe was the same year as Spider-Man 3 with Web of Shadows a year later. Shattered Dimensions had a little more time to cook thankfully with two years, but then Edge of Time and Amazing Spider-Man came out the next two years. The rate they were going; Spider-Man would have gotten some kind of live service game if the license was still with Activision.
The change is art direction is probably because they were experimenting because they weren't happy with Shattered Dimensions sales.. the art style change doesn't really accomodate sharing of assets between games.. it's as simple as that.
Um, I hate to tell you how to do your job but.. "The story is what *WEBS* you in..." It wa s right there, Matty... Right in front of your un-masked face.
4:32 this is around that time where instruction manuals were becoming a lost art. Very little effort put into them. Just bare bones and colorless. I can see why the manuals for older games makes their value go up.
I really can't agree with any of the criticisms you have, other than the upgrade tree being bad. The story for the game is fantastic, judging it against this idea that "you should be able to switch between the two to see what actions in the past can do to the future and vice versa" is legit an impossible task for a ps3 era game and also doesn't respect the direction the game went. We get plenty of moments where we see the concept in action. The idea of a stubborn Spiderman who doesn't want to listen to Miguel, especially when he's being told to not save somebody, is very much in line with a traditional spiderman take. He's not an idiot, he's just a slave to his responsibility. It's a theme that carries the entire story of the game, especially with Miguel having to learn to become more of a hero and when the actual villain turns out to be oldman Peter Parker who's taken the 'great power great responsibility' lesson too far. It's one of Spider Man's most important and deep stories outside of the comics told as a time-travel sci-fi adventure.
While this game’s mechanics definitely weren’t the best, i think it’s universally agreed on when I say that this game was the best adaptation on 616 Peter Parker and Miguel O’Hara and their characters were captured near perfectly
Tbh being too critical can hurt your enjoymen of the game i was a kid so i just thought spidey was cool but for what it is its still a very good game and i put it up with wos and 2018 because of its great dialouge voice acting and tone Edit: just wathced the rest of the video holy crap have i never heard a worse vidoe game take
as a kid i played this and the cover of the game was all broken and no manual so i never had the change to see the full cover and manual thanks for showing me
Some people just expect too much & don't appreciate what the game offers. I know it's not perfect. It gets repetitive at times. But I would be a liar if I said I didn't have an absolute blast playing this.
I couldn’t disagree more with your opinions on the art style and Peter’s writing, firstly, this isn’t a Spider-Verse story with multiple realities, it’s the Present & Future in the same reality, hence the art style being consistent between both Spider-Men, second, Peter isn’t being stupid, he’s refusing to stand by and let others get hurt because he could’ve done something but didn’t, he probably knows what the smart thing to do is, but he consistently chooses the morally right thing, instead of the logically right thing
While not the worst Spider-Man game, it's still far from the best. I think one of the biggest irks with this game is how limited the scope is compared to the last game.
If I heard correctly I believe activation kind of forced the developers to make this game in a very short time span, like half the time and money they had with Shattered Dimensions. which could explain a lot.
I hate that the arena mode was locked behind a cheat code and not unlocked by beating the game or even 100% entertwospiders or twospidersenter is the code
Yeah they were rush because Bennox actually wanted to do a a sequel to Shadow dimensions but on the publisher's Activision said no. Because they wanted to another with Spider-Man title out real quick so they had to hurry up and come up with this Edge of time game. Honestly I'm not really that disappointed because when they explain the premises that Spider-Man and Spider-Man 2099 are going to be stuck into altrctrax building I was like oh okay I see.
The game had a very cheap feeling. Kind of like the amazing spiderman games. The graphics and framerate felt clunky/outdated Never heard anyone say it was bad game. But didnt hear anyone say it was amazing either. I do love the suit

I love edge of time I didnt even know it got hate till i saw people talking about it on the internet sure its not a super long game and it has its limits but what it does it does super well imo I love the banter between miguel and Peter I love the story
I feel like Peters tenure as Spider-Man absolutely gives him the right to not be trusting of everyone he comes across claiming to have good intentions lmao! Doesn’t seem stupid at all but Fuck anything he just seems cautious, as he should be lol what a weird gripe
Ive been playing spiderman shattered dimensions via emulator on pc. Also been playing a lot of armored core. I love that i can play all these old gems on pc
i'd like to see some of the older transfomers games in preparation for rise of the beasts. like fall of cybertron and war for cybertron, even the movie games if that can be covered.
I grew up with these game so I have tight nostalgia goggles on when looking at it, but I don't think it's at all bad. I get that many people say there's no reason to play it since shattered dimensions exists, or that it should have been dlc. However, I think this game is better because of it's story, atmosphere, and characters. Shattered dimensions plot was very generic and the characters, though fun, were two dimensional at best whereas edge of time strips it down to two spider men which I think makes it work much better. Through the entire game you feel like you're on the clock constantly and I don't just mean the parts where you have a timer on screen. The whole game sets this mood where you really feel that this is a story taking place over a very long day. You watch it go from the afternoon all the way to dawn at the end of the game, peter's suit gets progressively morn torn and dirty, and the characters sound as though they're going through the ring and ready for this whole thing to end. Like I said I have heavy nostalgia lens but the eot's story is just so great that it makes the game one of my absolute favorite spider man games of all time.
Fun fact, this game is about $20 on Nintendo Wii. So if you want to play the cheapest version of this game, there it is. Of course that means you will have to play it on the Wii, and who really wants to do that?
This was the weird sequel to Shattered Dimensions I never got around to, and at 4 hours long and the price people are charging for it online, no thank you. I’m sure its okay, but definitely not worth 70 plus dollars. Imma stick with my copy of SD I’ve had since middle school.
I think it's weird how Edge of Time is loathed by the community but Shattered Dimensions is lauded... To me SD had me turning it off and returning it in the first few hours. Everything felt so clunky to play. The story felt disjointed and corney. And the level design was uninspired aside from 2099. Then EOT comes out and is the exact opposite. And everyone hates it?
I believe this game was not given alot of development time, and apparently if it was given more time from the start the devs would have made shattered dimensions 2.

Mostly because it's scaled down compared to Shattered Dimensions. Also, the way how the plot goes on the second half of the story didn't help.
I personally liked Edge of Time better than Shattered Dimensions. The tone was darker and the voices for Miguel and Peter just worked better.
