Donald Trump to give ‘great consideration’ to Australia over possible tariff exemption

- US President Donald Trump has commented on his phone call with Australian Prime Minister Anthony Albanese about a possible exemption from America’s 25 per cent steel and aluminium tariff.
“I just spoke to him; very fine man, and he has a surplus - I mean, we have a surplus with Australia, one of the few, and the reason is they buy a lot of airplanes,” President Trump said during a media conference on Monday, local time.
“They’re rather far away, and they need lots of airplanes, and we actually have a surplus; it’s one of the only countries which we do, and I told him that that’s something that we will give great consideration to.”

In the mean time after 1994 South Africa closed most of their steel industries. Huge job losses and poverty followed in those towns… Witbank, Vanderbijlpark to name only 2. Hopefully the leaders will realise how important it is to support their own manufacturing.
Agreed, but we barely manufacture anything here anyway. Just about all of the iron ore and any other valuable mineral is shipped straight out of Australia to China, Korea and Japan. Communism gradually killed most manufacturing in Australia roughly between 1950-1970. I know because my family ran a company that employed more than 1000 people and expanded to South Africa. There was a whole street in Port Elizabeth that was filled with Australian manufacturers who were expanding overseas. The dockers union (wharfies) though back in Australia were reading out of Chairman Mao's little red book and wouldn't load any cargo for 6 months. A lot of goods perished on the wharves and it sent the companies' home operations bankrupt. The factory my grandfather was running out of South Africa outperformed the Australian operation, however he had to pack it up. That whole street closed down and became a ghost town. There is so many untruths told in both of our countries around politics and other events that have shaped their future outcomes and the history books are either silent or down right fraudulent on the true facts. So we still have farming and mining and the rest of the population pours coffees for one another or sits around doing very little if you look at our workforce participation rate. We are behind Uganda and many other nations in terms of official economic complexity rankings - Australia is truly an economic paradox! Best we keep our numbers low though, as there is only so much wealth that can be shared around and asset prices are already severely distorted as they are. Only a sliver of our population works in mining and it pays for just about half of everything we have. WA also subsidises all of the other states, while they lecture it on political matters and things that affect it but barely have relevance in their own back yards. At one point the state actually voted to secede by a margin that exceeded 60% but a number of forces moved to stop that from occurring. They could be well on their way towards a massive sovereign fund by now to rival Norway and some oil states in the Middle East.
The US sells twice as much to Australia as they sell to the US and its been this way for decades. The submarine deal is costing Australia around $300 billion. Plus Australia has fought with the US in just about every major war they started. So if Trump screws Australia its going to backfire in the long term for the US. Australia is vital stratigically to the US in the Pacific. And, any ideas of invading Australia....well it did not go so well for the Americans in every theatre war going back to Vietnam. Australias make great mates but they are the worst as enemies.

Australia imposes tariffs on imports from all countries. It's called GST. Free Trade Agreements are not "free" they're Managed Trade Agreements. If we charge GST on US imports then they are perfectly entitled to charge GST/tariffs on our exports to them.

‘Finest cars in the world’, since when?
Someone needs to make sure Donald Trump is aware of the Albanese government's policy to tax imported American cars when he is considering whether to exempt Australia from import tariffs.
The buyers in Australia are bent over for tax, not American manufacturers.
You really don't think Trumps advisors looked into that? You realise they studied at MIT right?
@moviesynopsis001 I have little doubt that Donald Trump is well briefed clever clogs. I only hope that in the interests of freeing Australians from financial coercion in their choice of motor vehicles, that the fact Albanese and the lunatic Bowen's policies will tax American (and others) petrol and diesel vehicles to manipulate the market in favour of EVs, which will mostly favour China, will be cited as problematic to import tariff considerations. It would be a great wedge.

In case you don’t realise, trading with the US is way too much. Delivery price is a massive killer.
I do hope T gives Australia an exemption. But there's 2 major problems if he does that. (1) The purpose of T tariff is to spur greater domestic production of steel. Giving exemption is counter productive. (2) Europe and other countries will want exemption too. (3) If any country is given exemption it will be Canada. Because Canada is supplying to the US energy and other components critical to the US
The US is way more vital to Canada than Canada is to the US. If any of this "vital energy" stops, the U.S would be hurt, what Canada would be destroyed.

Do you really care fellow Aussies? We often criticize (and still end up casting a vote for) a political party for getting 50% of things wrong and 50% right. However, when Pauline Hanson makes mistakes in only 20% of her policies and gets 80% right, she is dismissed without consideration. Unlike countries like the USA, Australia doesn't offer a broad spectrum of favorable major political parties. In our context, it’s clear that parties like People First, with Senator Rennick, and One Nation, with Senator Roberts, deserve greater support from the Australian public to break free from the current Labor-led challenges. The Libertarian Party also might offer better than what has been.
I encourage you to consider the smaller parties thoughtfully and give them a fair chance, particularly when deciding how to rank your preferences in an election. It doesn’t necessarily need to be your first choice, but perhaps a second or third choice for a change. Take the time to research and engage in discussions with your family and friends about the upcoming vote. If you are taking the time to read this, you have the time to chat to people that matter in your life. We’ve experienced two decades of political missteps in this country, and it’s important to recognize that no party can tick every single box. That kind of perfection simply doesn’t exist in Australian politics, particularly when we’re dealing with the current mess.
My advice is to support the party that aligns with 80% of your values, even if you have reservations about the remaining 20%. While it’s tempting to focus on those small imperfections, the 80% is far more significant and impactful. The parties that are divided 50/50 thrive when we remain fragmented and focus on the small disagreements. However, voting for a 50/50 party can do more harm in the long run, as we’ve seen with Labor’s impact over the past several years. The repercussions of voting for such parties are deeply felt throughout the country.
It’s time we consider alternative options and perhaps give the Greens and Labor a break from the driver’s seat, allowing other parties a chance to steer the country in a different direction. Whatever your decision, I urge you to approach your vote with care, as the future of our nation depends on it.
All the best, no matter who you choose to vote for.

What are the chances a decision won’t come until after the next federal election.
