The longest-serving Malaysian prime minister, Dr Mahathir held office twice from 1981 to 2003 and 2018 to 2020, respectively. During Mahathir's first tenure as prime minister, Malaysia experienced a period of rapid modernisation and economic growth, and his government initiated widespread industry privatisation and a series of bold infrastructure projects. Mahathir sought to restore the rule of law by reopening investigations into corruption and implementing financial reform by cutting spending on large infrastructure projects in his second term.

How many of the Malaysian leaders have been invited to appear at Oxford Union? He is not without critics at home but he would have achieved more if not for his racial mindset running the country.
No country in the world can be run successfully along racial and religious lines. Malaysia as a country has been hampered by its long term race policy, owed no less to this man.

Tun blamed everything on culture, as if the Malays are destined to be lazy and poor because it's a cultural thing. Let's assume the Malay culture is really less competitive, so the Malay-dominated government should just let it be? No! They should change that! How? Through education. But look at the education standards of public schools especially at sekolah kebangsaan. Look at SPM. Has it improved or gotten easier and more lenient? After decades of New Economic Policy and all the privileges dedicated to uplifting the Malay community, why is it that the Malays, as Tun said it, remain poor and culturally weak? All because of the almighty unshakeable culture, or the government has failed the Malays? They failed on execution, they failed on oversight, and they allowed the policies to be abused to enrich the selected few. Malaysian institution is weak, and that developed under your watch, Tun! And stop telling the Malays that they are culturally inferior because if they are not, you are lying and trying to suppress them. But even if they are, it is the government's job to educate them and uplift them, a job which should have been done many many years ago but the government failed again and again.

Tun M completely wasting the audience's time in this speech, however so many bagi kata-kata pujian just because his england is powderful. Here's a quick run through of until Question 11 from the interviewer:
Issues highlighted are nothing groundbreaking or new(fangled):
    1. Climate change
    2. Political disunity (pandemic, wars, arms race)
    3. Solving problems with "discussions
Q1: What to do about climate change for coastal states like Malaysia?
Tun M: Stop war, focus on development, a quick swipe at Najib and Muhyiddin. Nothing substantive.
Q2: Who should take the lead in combatting CC?
Tun M: An international committee (UN). The UNSC is bad so the UN is undemocratic and needs a reform.
    Interviewer: Duh…
Q3: Ukrainian war - MH17 shot down by Russian missile. What role can Malaysia play in the Ukrainian crisis?
Tun M: Iranian plane in the gulf shot down by USA, seems intentional. TL; DR moving the goal post, blame game on. Justice must apply equally (duh)...
Note: Did not address Malaysia’s role.
Q4: Lessons that neighboring countries to a conflict can learn from Malaysia and its neighbors?
Tun M: Colonial history of Malaysia, and conflict with Indonesia for acquiring SS. Indonesian leadership changed and decided to end the confrontation, becoming friends with Malaysia. Germany and France used to be at war, but are now friends, just like USA and Japan. Use this model - countries should become friends to end conflict.
Note: Did not answer the question at all. The context of the question is about what Ukraine’s neighbors can do to help Ukraine, not about what enemies can do to end war.
Q5: Why join politics as a physician?
Tun M: Mumbling about being friends and not enemies. France and Germany, winner vs loser.
    Note: LOL
Q6: Significant memories from the 2018 PH victory in the election?
Tun M: Did not expect to win, so the victory was because the last government was bad, but not because we were good.
Q7: What is missing from Malaysian politics?
Tun M: Democracy in the hands of bad people can become very bad (note: this is tautology lol). They (politicians) think not in terms of serving but making money.
TL; DR Malaysian lacks good politicians.
Q8: Your authoritarian approach is said to be not democratic. How do you respond?
Tun M: As an opposition, calling someone in power with nasty words is normal. Opposition parties couldn’t prove that I was corrupt. “I didn’t take any money”.
Note: Venality does not present itself solely in the sense of money-grabbing. How parochial.
Tun M: Must ignore opposition and carry on (note: essentially does not respect the role of check and balance).
Q9: Rise of populism and the future of democracy?
Tun M: Democracy is the best system, but open to abuses. Party with the majority does not mean there is majority support because of bribery (buying of votes).
Note: Does not understand the difference of democracy and bribery. Does not address the challenge of populism.
Q10: Malaysia now supports China when it used to be the opposite. What happened?
Tun M: I did not change my mind, I still support FDI and local investments when the country is poor. But FDI also cause losses; inducement by way of tax exemptions is costly, but FDI create jobs. So, pros and cons. However, the jobs created are not quality jobs. So we have to be creative. Malaysia must lead in other industries where it can dominate - gloves. The pandemic allowed Malaysia to benefit. This comes largely from domestic investments. As for the railway, it is lopsided to benefit the foreign and not Malaysia; we then renegotiated to tip the scale.
Note: benefitting from a pandemic is not sustainable, and morally contemptible. But coming from Tun M, this is expected.
Q11: One of the reasons you were voted back in was to manage the rising national debt of about 250 billion USD. Have you managed to fulfill this mandate?
    Tun M: Mumbling about renegotiating.
Note: Completely missing the question. At this point it was clear that the interviewer was frustrated. I also quit, LOL!

The hypocrisy of this dude... To this day, Malaysian constitution treats it's non Muslim Malaysians as a second class citizen , some of them are 5th generation Malaysians and some of them have been native to the land way back when, effectively denying them equal access to their dreams and aspirations. It's almost impossible for some of them (especially from poor back ground) to improve themselves economically. Meanwhile, a second generation Muslim can enjoy all privileges of first class citizenship. It's unheard of in any other part of the world. The system was bound to change in due time but Mahathir sowed such strong divisions within political system during his rule , promoting "us vs them" mindset within Malaysia and capitalized on racist and religious sentiments to the point that apartheid is basically a normalcy in the country now. It should come as no surprise that Mahathir made claim to his power by antagonizing and displacing our progressive first prime minister (who also got us our freedom from British).
Mahathir also degraded a strong judicial system that was inherited from British rule so that he can have things done his way and spent most of his political time adding power to himself, sowing division, oppressing opposition and jailing them on absurd claims. Our judicial system is recovering but the country is still suffering the damage he has his done. It's still funny to me how he came back to politics later to "save" the system he broke.
And now in his old age, he's still promoting the same dumb racists rhetoric in the country while acting like a progressive champ overseas. What an attention seeking joke of a person. Malaysia could have done so much better under its first prime minister.

you're probably referring to less than 10 capitalists who contributed and made their money during early days of countries development along side the first Prime Minister. Somehow these are supposed to exemplify how fair our country is. And even lot of their wealth at present has been mostly appropriated by state because of racist laws. And your statistics is total horse shit. You're not getting the point at all. How does having a racist policy help for example an poor Orang Asli, and minority to get a fair housing or even having his/her children to get a fair entry in university , or a job civil service? I mean of course racist policies help finance great movies like Wolf of wall street but what other benefits are there ?

so please OxfordUnion stop inviting reality tv stars like Ben Shapiro, it hurts my eyes watching him desecrate this platform.

Why would the CIA go after him? US Navy secured Port Klang and Kota Kinabalu as port to call and this position is not challenged regardless of Tun. M being in power or not. Unless Malaysia plays a part in undermining US Navy power projection in regional waters, Malaysia leadership is inconsequential.

Was even existed for the new Malaysia in 2018, but Sheraton Move treachery, and him going along with the mutineers, probably thinking he would be PM again (now with his real desire) is what I will not forget.
He started the culture of money politics, Najib tool it to the next level.
