How to catch Mew legally in Pokemon Blue/Red

- Just something I really wanted to put in here for a while, it blew my mind when i figured this out years ago and i hope i blew someone's mind today.
So here's how it works:
-Every pokemon in the game has a code, as long as you know that code you can find really almost any pokemon you want in that bridge. To activate mew you need a slowpoke, but you can get really many different kinds of pokemons by trying out this bug with different trainers.
The abra can be caught on the patch of grass west to the nugget bridge, where the guy we use to start the glitch is standing.

It will never cease to amaze me how that by sheer coincidence of addresses and whatnot just so happening to line up when performing this incredibly specific set of actions, Game Freak basically left a built-in "Catch Any Pokemon" code in the game by total fucking accident. If that isn't the coolest programming blunder of all time, then what is?
You can manipulate the game far more deeply, it's not that it's an incredible coincidence, it's more that the game has no security.

+Saku taku (Sakutaku) Lol, I borrowed my friend's Gameshark and got Gengar as my starter, along with all the real starters in the wild and a Mew. My friends at the time who didn't know what a gameshark was were so amazed by my rare finds. I just told them that Professor Oak liked me. lol, looking back, I was a jerk for not telling them I cheated.
A helpful tip; hold start when moving down into the space where you are spotted.
It took me a few attempts to move down and press start simultaneously before getting spotted and going into combat.

I got Mew back in 1999 legally on my cartridge. Nintendo came to my local mall and you had to give them your cartdridge and they would give you mew and a pokemon TCG, only for the first 50 people or something like that, it was amazing.
Those are the child memories that you never forget, amazing.

A friend of mine won a Mew from Nintendo through a Toys R Us promotion. There were sticker sheets and you won if you saw a mew underneath a sticker on the back of the sheet, and he got one. Same story, he had to bring his cartridge to the store and a Nintendo rep added a Mew to his lineup and gave him a Charizard card.

I had a Mew that kept popping up in my hall of fame after doing the masingo glitch on Pokemon Blue so i knew he must have existed within the game. It has bugged me for around 18 years wondering how to catch it. Now i can die in peace. Thank you

This isn’t how you catch him. This is a glitch. You don’t catch mew in game you had to go to real life Pokémon events and they would give you a mew download.

You can also battle the first trainer at the gym, his Shelder has the same special stat for Mew.
I actually literally just tested to see if you can still catch Mew after blacking out by losing to the Shelder and you can! So technically you can get an infinite amount of Mew since when you black out you can fight the trainer again.

For those that can't get the timing right with the pause menu you need to get up above him and you want to make sure that you press Start AFTER pressing down, not during. It helps if you use the same finger because if you press start too early it won't count it.
Also, if using an Advance or newer Game Boy you it really helps to change the resolution to the original.
I can confirm this also works on the newly released VC version of Red/Blue.

I used my lvl 18 Magikarp to whittle it downand surprisingly only needed 3 Pokeballs.Oh also if you use growl 6 times, you will get a Mew at lvl 1 that can lvl up to lvl100 instantly.

Actually this glitch is true....
You have to have someone trade you a pokemon with strength and swim .. when you get to the S.S Anne, in the bridge before you board on the ship you use surf and go off to the right. You'll find a small piece of land with a tractor. Use strength infront of it, push it and a battle with Mew will start
so i went to an official nintendo event at the mall and waited in line for nothing?! well, at least they gave me a certificate for mew when they added him into my cartridge. all you young people dont understand the struggle...

Truth be told, I'm kind of partial to having illegitimate/hacked pokemon over ones obtained legitimately, especially when I go about crafting them to be perfectly identical to the legitimate pokemon that there is no way to tell the difference. I feel the same way about diamonds too. I think synthetic diamonds grown in a lab are much cooler than natural ones, even if naturals are worth more, but I'm digressing here.

True, not really into the glitch idea. Then again I made sure to beat the elite four first before working on the Pokedex. I can't even capture the legendary anymore but developers really wanted us to stop at 150 at the time. Replaying again for nostalgia sake.

This may be a glitch, but it's currently one of the only known ways to get a Mew. Those events have been over for years.

If you growl the slowpoke 6 times the mew's level will be 1 (7-6) instead of 7 and you can do underflow for It to be level 100

Well that was a glitch made by the guys who made the gen 1 games, nobody knew until they told us some years ago for the 10th aniversary acording to a guy.
Pff, a lot of people knew, they just didn't make a youtube video on it. I learned about the ditto glitch (though not mew in particular), back in 2002 or something. What happened is they tried to pause the game before a trainer battle to see if it was possible. Then when they managed to pause it, they tried to fly away, and they managed to do so. After learning that was possible, they probably started playing normally again and randomly encountered pokemon not native to that region at all. Then they figured out it was a glitch.
These things take time to discover, but most likely the first time it was just by accident.

Hell yes just caught Mew using this. Some more specific instructions concerning finding and catching Abra before hand would have been nice. Took me bloody hours! You need to have a levelled up (17) Butterfree with sleep powder to catch one. Then the only place I could find Abra was in the little patch of grass early on route 25 (right before the kid with slow poke).

Holy shit... this totally worked . I fucking caught Mew... I haven’t played Pokémon in years and I’m turning 30 in a couple days. I told myself I had to catch Mew by the time I was 30 when I was a kid as a joke but I actually did it. Crushed through it in 2 nights with open emu and the fast forward button.

Downloaded Pokemon Red to try this out, totally works. I wanted to push it further and see what other pokemon you can get.. If you trigger the glitch and fight the trainer AFTER the one in this video, you come across a Lapras. If you do the next trainer, the miner (or hiker maybe) on the bottom, you come across a Gengar! I'm gonna keep capturing these awesome Pokemon :D

Thats how people found Mew in the first place. its based on the last pokemon you fight. I think you can get a level 100 nitoking before brock if im not mistaken.
Wow, that’s crazy, just got my analogue pocket and started over my blue version. And this actually worked, it got me thinking, can this be done later in the game. You can avoid the youngster who has slowpoke and still meet Bill and you can avoid the guy in the grass who you need to initiate the glitch. Catching Abra, was a pain.
It can be done later in the game as long as you don’t fight the first trainer and that trainer with the Slowpoke. There’s also a trainer in Cerulean gym with Slowpoke.
I firmly believe that this glitch was intended to be in the game from the beginning. It’s not coincidence that Abra is located here and is a crucial part of the glitch. It’s an Easter egg. Not sure how someone stumbled on it.. probably a leak from Nintendo employee

No it doesn’t . I changed out my Pokémon during the battle . The game didn’t freeze, I was still able to catch mew

Damnat I wish I figured this out, back in '98. I had all 151 Pokemon except Mew, tried like 6 hacks that people had brought up on the internet back then. But none of them ever worked. Ended up grabbing him with my Game Genie. I'm glad this hack was leaked. Pretty cool.

I lived in the countryside at that time in the middle of nowhere lol. Not magazine stores for a while so never saw it.
Legal in the sense that it can be done without any save editor's or cheat devices? Yes. Legal in the sense that it's a real pokemon that can be verifably obtained through vanilla means that won't raise any red flags to say Pokemon Transporter? No.
Once upon a time on holiday with family at somewhere similar to if not Center Parcs, I remember walking in to the arcade area and I had my Gameboy. I had Pokemon loaded up and one of the kids there started talking to me. He told me he can get Mew for me and I didn't know whether to believe him. I handed him the Gameboy and he did his magic in front of me and I can't remember for the life of me how. Something to do with surfing by the SS Anne. I was so happy! Thanks to whoever that kid is man, I hope he's doing well these days... This is one memory that stands out for me from over 20 years ago.
Back in high school the only way to get Mew on any Pokemon game was off this kid who had a Gameshark device for the Gameboy Color.
In all seriousness though back in those days there was TONS of bogus stories/methods/rumors going around of how you could catch Mew in either Pokemon Red/Blue or Yellow and NONE of them ever bore any fruit so in the end you were left with no other option than to cheat!!

Heres a great way to get mew and in fact to also break the game a little bit. You pretty much do the same thing you did except instead of defeating a slowpoke if you fight the first trainer in misty's gym who has a shelder, the shelder has the required special attack to summon mew during the glitch. And as an added bonus if you growl at the shelder 6 times it sets what level the pokemon will appear as. for each growl itll reduce the level of the pokemon. So by growling 6 times itll set the mew as level 1. Since 1st gen does not normally register pokemon as level 1, when you catch the mew and then this is critical! DO NOT get the exact amount of experience it would take to level up, instead get just enough experience to where it would not level up and the game will automatically boost your mew to level 100.

maybe he meant that with this trick you can transfer mew to pokebank, then use it in whatever new pokemon game you want? by doing this glitch you can also capture any pokemon, so you can complete pokedex

I love that this sounds *less* likely to work than finding it under a truck, but it actually does. If I heard about this in the playground when I was younger I'd think someone was bullshitting me.
It worked. Absolutely amazing! First try to. Only fired up my blue to complete my yellows Pokédex and was about 7 in the game. Got the Pokédex completed and then was wondering what hacks I can do and thankfully I hadn’t battled any of these trainers. So sick.

The hardest part is the timing of pressing start. Any ideas? Maybe it’s because I’m playing on the USA release?
With captions on everytime he said mew the captions read it as "meal", so I laughed when he said to "enjoy your meal" lol
After you teleport the first time, go into the gym and battle the first trainer there on the right. Kill his first pokemon and on his shellder (his second pokemon) use growl 6 times. This is important. After you knock out his pokemon (after using growl six times) you can heal your pokemon and go encounter Mew. It will be level 1. This is amazing because the game isnt made to have level 1's in it. So after you catch it, look at its stats and see its experience needed to level up. Go into a battle with mew in the first slot then withdraw him for someone else and MAKE SURE you get less exp than Mew needs to level up. This will make him level 100 automatically BUT ONLY IF YOU GIVE HIM LESS EXP THAN HE NEEDS.
I can assure you that it will work.

I entered mewtwo's cave 100 times so i could find brock to give the mew , i finished indigo plateau 100 times so mew can appear, something with the truck couldnt also find it, missigno glitch over 1000 times didnt get any mew and then i was sure that only nintendo event could transfer it to you...AND NOW I SEE THIS VIDEO AND U TELL ME I CAN GET IT INSIDE THE GAME...I HAD ALL 250 BACK THEN WITH WIRE TRANSFERS OF COURSE

The thing is though is that this Mew can't be traded to the Pokemon Bank on the virtual console versions. It's stuck there, unless you change the Original Trainer name with the 8F

Did the first guy actually write down the steps? Otherwise how could he remember it? You need to be prepared for such things, just like making a recipe for something.
I too once played a gbc game on the gbc console and I played dragon ball z legendary super warriors and right before a match I randomly pushed the buttons (like I need to when I'm prompted to push the buttons for 3-6 stage attacks atk for the people who know the game) and once I got into the battle the first like 5 abilities the enemy used on me didn't lower my hp.
It was so random the I remember only the first 3 buttons, and I pushed like 15+ buttons randomly.
using a gameshark. The gameshark codes to change what pokemon appear in the wild are known and their address locations. What probably happened is someone looked at what affected those memory locations. After realizing that when battling different data is loaded into the memory for those locations someone theorized an exploit. I always thought about trying to escape a trainer fight in a similar manner so someone probably just figured that part out. The rest was probably done messing around with a gameshark.

Got it on third try and bam i got mew baby!!!! Just do everything he says and have the pokeballs ready. To get abra its in that patch of grass where he is so you walk one spot over and then sell nuget to get balls and weaken mew then bam put it to sleep with jiggly and bam you got a mew!
This does work on vc versions, however the Pokemon will be labelled illegitimate and not transferable to pokebank
