Thank for the information. I love how you explain and show the difference. You need a cordless microphone, sometimes it's hard to hear you. Lol!!! Don't want to miss what you are saying.
Hello, Stephen. I bought a c. nobilior v. coerulea x sib at the Jacksonville (FL) orchid show in 2019 for $60. My first species orchid and, at that time, the most I'd ever spent on an orchid. The seller said they were from Brazil and easy to grow. NOT. I'm lucky they're still alive. "They" because it split the first time the pot got dumped when the dogs hit it. Not the orchid's fault. I read on Orchid Talk they MUST have a hard winter dry rest. I potted both sections in lava rock and did just that. This year, 2 years later, I've got new growth coming that I had hoped would be blooms. Nope. I only get new growth every 18 months. Lovely round pseudobulbs in front with really wrinkled round pseudobulbs in the back. No blooms EVER. I can bloom pretty much everything else. Suggestions? Thanks.
Hi Ellen, this species only blooms when it has a massive root system. Buying the plant and then having it split probably set it back a few years, and that’s assuming it’s even a mature size! I wonder if you’re keeping it too dry during the growing period? I get 2-3 flushes of growth per year on my plants. How bright do you grow it?
@@SVKLOrchids I’m trying getting more light but that’s means keeping moving them around_ which is becoming chores.😕. Sorry to hear about the porphyroglossa... I have mine at my sister’s as struggling with the other cattleyas.
Hi, I've subscribed now and watched enough of your videos on c. nobiliors to know that what I'm doing to mine will never grow into a specimen anything like yours unless I change things drastically. They're currently in clay pots in lava rock alone, in bright light along with my other catts. Slow release granular fertilizer and I gave them a hard winter rest as I read on an orchid forum that was the only way to get them to bloom. . . and that was the only way they put out new growth this spring but no blooms. That being said, what do I do now? New growth. . . do I repot into large bark? The back bulbs are extremely shriveled. I could sent pictures if that's possible. Thanks, Ellen in Atlantic Beach, FL
A Brazilian friend told me not to do quite as hard a winter rest as has been reported. My blooms are more consistent now with more flowers! Shriveled backbbs will rebound with water. I’m definitely game to look at some photos tho! Hit me up on Instagram or Facebook.
Wow, growing season. . . and all this time I've been concentrating on the winter rest. Okay, so since my two are now putting out new growths, my seedlings (sigh) are possibly in their growth mode? Anything you can recommend I can do to make them happy? I keep them outside in the same conditions as my Cattleyas; bright light. They have a couple of sunburn marks on a leaf each. I use slow release granular fertilizer and occasionally liquid but as they're in lava rock, nothing sticks. : - b So, Just time???? Years, seriously? Any advice would be appreciated. Thanks!
Yes, growing them alongside your other Cattleyas should work well. I’ve also found they don’t need as hard a winter rest as I’ve been told by Francisco Miranda. In fact I get better blooms when I give them a drier rest than my other Cattleyas, but not as severe as I used to. This is based on advice from Luiz Hamilton Lima, another well known Brazilian that specializes in Cattleyas.
Hi Stephen, what kind of medium and growing methods do you use with cattleyas, just large orchiata in straight clay pots throughout ? Are you as inventive as you are with catasetum ? Thanks for this interesting video.
First of all: AMAZING specimen👏👏😁😁 In his video @Mygreenpets said that Cattleya walkeriana is very sensitive to light pollution at night, that could explain why some plants just won't bloom whatever you try. Can you confirm? Like I said, it could explain why for some growers, no walkeriana ever blooms, but in their natural habitat, there will be moon light, so I am sceptical. Or is this only about daylength? I see why a plant may be confused when there suddenly is a 14h day among the 10h days and think bloom season is over.

I should look into one!

I agree with Valerie. I go to turn my volume up as you're hard to hear but it's at 100. Can't go any higher.
I bought a microphone for all my newer videos! I didn’t realize it was tough to hear me.
Lovely seeing your blooms_ I’m so jealous _ just not getting any blooms on my cattleyas😔. What happeneing with porphyroglossa orchid?
Were you able to increase the light on your Cattleyas? I think I tossed the porphyroglossa 😢😢

@@mesandz2623 Can you add lights above them instead of moving them?

Hi Andre, I only use orchiata and clay, as you mentioned! It’s very boring compared to the Catasetums!

Yes, walkeriana is sensitive to night light. In nature, moonlight comes and goes, but a street light is on all night, every night!
@@SVKLOrchids Good to know! But I have to ask, is the "mom might comes and goes" an american pun I don't know or autocorrection?
@@loho1125 "moonlight" not "mom might" 😉
@@MyGreenPets Gotta have fun😂. Of course I knew that was the autocorrection doing... whatver it does to annoy us😉

Looking for this in my town... no luck. If there is one, I couldn"t afford it. 🥺
They can be pricey! Francisco Miranda is the best source right now that I’ve found.
