This was my thinking. All of the Kin are created to serve a purpose within their society. Literally manufactured for that purpose. It would be weird, in fact, if they considered Ironkin any lesser for not being made of flesh and blood.
the design language of these is soooo good. 40k has always been good at tying together different influences and ideas (cowboy mechanicum anyone?) but these are sometyhing special
That's what people said about the Tau. And then people figured out what the Greater Good could mean as well. Lets wait and see, grim dark is never far away.
IIRC, the way their whole population is made up of clones that may or may not be template/designer...is a bit shady. Don't quite remember the details there, so I might be talking out of my buttocks.
@The Comment Critic There's been mentions of a few species that didn't quite agree with the tau being purged, as well as another that the tau lived alongside but they coincidentally died off due to a plague.
The shot of the Ironkin compared to the Kin next to it is interesting, because they have the same arms, albeit with a different rifle. This to me suggests the Ironkin might just be one of the leg/torso options in the kit, and can carry pretty much the same guns as their fleshier counterparts.
I hope they're functionally the same. It adds to the idea the squats view Ironkin as equals and separates them from the Adeptus Mechanicus (who view AI as evil) or Tau (who use primitive drones and other races are more "separate but equal" wink wink nudge nudge).
This looks like it's for Kill Team. You got the Leader (with pistol and powersword), some different Gunners, Comms, and Sniper. Kill Team also gets shown off in the two-model at a time sort of thing. Fingers crossed for Nids vs. Squats in Kill Team!
They also talked about this squad having a medic in the article, another typical model for kill team so I am very hopeful that this will be a kill team and this with Nids in a box would be awesome
I'd like to see a Kill Team box of Squats vs World Eaters as a call-back to a classic bit of art from second edition that's always been a favourite of mine
Loving their lore! They don’t sound too batshit insane (which makes them sound more approachable which to me is important) and I like the whole ‘kin is kin’ aspect. The models just look stellar too. Love the retro future vibe and the bulky models. I’ve always wanted to get into the board game and they honestly sound like just the right starting army for me!
Love the ‘kin is kin’ mentality that’s shown by having mixed squads. I wish the tau could be similar with mixed species infantry kits. Really look like a big, unified coalition.
I'm surprised they haven't introduced a Gue'vesa unit into the main T'au Empire codex, or at least a sprue into the firewarrior kit. Especially since there's no initiative stat anymore. There's really no difference in stat lines between a human and a tau, except for weapon skill.
The minimal alien auxiliaries has always felt like a missed opportunity with the Tau. Kropotkin are nice, Vespid are nice, but it should be Gue'Vesa, Tarellian dog soldiers, Demiurg, etc all available and ready to go. It should be totally doable to run a handful of Tau units as the main "handlers", surrounded by a hodgepodge of alien races who may or may not be doing all of the dirty jobs that don't fit the Tau's preferred style of warfare...I mean "fighting for the Greater Good".
@@ProfDCoy Yeah I first got interested in 40k when tau came out, and then only started following it again recently. And it feels weird that Kroot have kind of lost units over the years, and the only auxiliary tau gained in that time were the Vespids, whose models look kind of bad. Instead GW went kind of ham on the mecha. Like, I like mecha, but Tau being a unified force of xenos fighting for their place in the galaxy would have been great.
No skulls everywhere, good spot! No little beardy faces everywhere either. I think these look great. I think I'll get some to be like a workers' militia fighting alongside my Red Army space marines.
I kinda wish the women had beards, though. If I get any squats, my womenkin are definitely getting massive sideburns and mutton chops sculpted on with some greenstuff.
I think that the boxes will come with extra "heads" and legs for you to build both Kin and Iron-kin, kind of how boxes now have some helmeted and un-helmeted heads.
Kind of looking for a new army to pick up later this year. I was considering admech but I might hold off and see how these guys pan out. They feel like they have just the right amount of detail for a basic troop squad.
Its looking like this kit has a lot of heads, perhaps the neck join means you can add the Iron-kyn's head onto what ever body you choose. The arms in this box art are exactly the same as the Living guys. Last weeks droid looked like hands and feet could be indistinguishable from normal kin too - which is a good design choice to be able to field a full unit of them. Did they state the role of the first Iron-kin model? I'd bet thats a droid - first aider?
The first Ironkin was some kind of assistant to the Votann-equivalent of a Techmarine, I believe. And I'm with you on the Ironkin heads being an option. Maybe not for the entire squad, but at least one or two members.
I don’t play Necromunda but I gotta have the squats. So I’ve decided to paint a little diorama. I’m getting the prospectors, gonna add an Escher mini, and I’m going to paint them like Snow White and the 7 dwarfs.
finally got my Squat prospectors, and started smooshing with a start collecting kharadon overlords box. it takes some thinking and a bit of filler, but i got seven so far and can't wait for the Kin box to become available. i want to maximize my smoosh and not use up all the parts too soon.
About the idea that some of them get battlefield bionics and augmentations and some have genetic background that biases them towards warfare, despite ostensibly not being made exclusively for warfare. It should be noted that none of that would actually exclude civilian life. Having metal feet or more resilient organs, or being born tougher, stronger and with better darkvision hardly seems like something that would exclude you from regular civilian life, especially when it looks like a lot of their civilian life involves heavy machinery, mining, industrial work etc. Rather, it looks like they're prepared for war (sensible, given the 40k universe) and make admissions for it, but don't let it dominate their whole culture and make sure that their people have a purpose outside of it as well. Warfare as a necessity that you'd be a fool to ignore, rather than warfare as all-encompassing purpose unto itself. It essentially seems similar to the way Dwarfs were portrayed in Warhammer Fantasy; these people have a culture of being prepared for war in a hostile universe, but many of them still have civilian lives outside of the understanding that they might have to defend their homes and kin.
Thank you Ian for these Squatcasts they really brighten my day! As someone that has typically shunned the far flung future for the fantastic past of Games Workshops IP. I broke down and bought the Chaos Knight Army box... thinking that i could proxy them for Archaon or some Soul Grinders. But now between Horus Heresy and Squats I am getting more and more excited for 30k/40k. I will likely not be able to financially jump into a completely new army like Squats. I am leaning towards making a Fallen Angels 40k and Dark Angels 30k army bolstered by some Knights. I will have Bastian Cartholos stand in for my 30k Primarch and then use some Slaves to Darkness miniatures to fill out my 40k Fallen.
Hasslefrees main (only?) sculptor, Kev White has just been recruited to sculpt for specialist games. Hes made an amazing one off Van Saar for his own gang. Looks promising for necromunda going forwards!
I really like the weapon aesthetics and welcome a new faction that will contrast the madness of the Imperium and Mechanicus - notwithstanding being led by degrading super AI.
Hasslefree are great, Kev has accepted a job at Forge World now so I’m sure we will be seeing some of particular skills in Necromunda soon, hopefully on some Squats!
You touched on it about the nod to possible different clones for combat would point towards some serious cyberpunk vibes like "Sleeves" from Altered Carbon or transferring consciousness. Both would be seriously cool and quite different to the rest of 40k.
Definitely a better impression than the first miniature. They're slightly retro sci-fi dwarfs with armoured space suits and robots mixed in. Still a bit disapointed at the lack of faction and Dwarf identity though, there's nothing to link them together as a faction (I.e. No Dwarf Head icon on their backpack or elsewhere) and very, very little in the way of Dwarf theming, there's the backpack thing but that's about it in terms of actual parts on the miniatures. It's also odd how the only ones of their weapons we've seen with any sort of Dwarf-like decoration has been the bolter while the rest of their weapons have nothing like it.
I'm hoping veterans with maybe "heirloom" weapons of some other theme will have more of a traditionally dwarf look to them personally. I kinda get why your standard, fresh boot infantry might not have the decorations but I feel they definitely have to break it out for the elite units. I kinda like the armored space suit look though.
L7? Do they pretend they’re dead when attacked? Is their melee attack a shove? Are they fast, mean and frightening? Do they have a “come back to bunch” save roll? I will stop. Ohm Andres, I’m sorry.
I really like these models. With all the different options for this squad it really does seem like we are looking at the Kill Team box. If I was starting 40k now I'd probably go with these instead of Space Wolves, but since these are quite close in theme and appearance to my Primaris Space Wolves, I think I'll be satisfied with a kill team.
"Hell, it's about time" - seriously, some of those Votan are doing some major Starcraft 2 Terran cosplay, to that point that if Starcraft wasn't already based on 40k, Blizzard's lawyers would be giving GW a call.
As far as I'm concerned anything Warhammer takes from Blizzard is Karma, and well deserved karma considering the soulless awful courtcase riddled mess Blizzard has become as of late. Of course the ultimate karma would be if GW could get some warhammer games out there that eat massively into the warcraft and starcraft customer base. Fingers crossed for a Totalwar 40K game and for that coming Age of Sigmar MMO to blow up and become incredibly popular.
I'm pretty sure thete will be one or two robots per squads - I would prefer a whole robot-unit-option as well but I believe that the preview would have been different in that case.
I don't even play 40K anymore and I'm looking forward to these guys. Have plans to make a crew of them for Stargrave. I really like the idea of being able to have some robots in the squads as well. Will fit perfectly in Stargrave. GW has a few box sets I'm looking forward to in the future... these guys, the new Traitor Guardsmen for Killteam, and the new Chaos Cultists around the corner. With their helmets on, the sqaut troopers remind me of dwarvish marines from Star Craft. I also like how, so far, the Votann don't seem to be major a-holes like a lot of the other factions. You know, they actually seem to care about their people both on and off the battlefield and even treat their robots as equals. Maybe Ian will finally get his "there is another way" faction that can be a good example of a better society. I hope. I like the idea of the Votann actually being pretty good people stuck in a galaxy filled with complete tyrants. They not only use old technology, but have "old ways", you know, like respecting life, before hatred, xenophobia, and fanaticism became the order of the day.
I kinda hope they don't go with a 'dark underbelly' and instead have them be one of the few story elements of the universe who aren't... utter dickbags. I don't mind that they have steered away from the old space bikers motif (not that I minded it, it was fun as hell) but we have something a bit more evolved here with a cohesive look. It's fun. If they include alternative styling like the greatcoats on the engineers as a point of difference like we've seen so far, I'll be happy.
I feel like they just look a little like chunky Genestealers mixed with marines. I hope they do more to differentiate them. They are a whole army after all right?
Metal feet. And it makes sense, because why the hell would the kin differentiate themselves from the iron kin when they themselves are just as manufactured. It’s just by flesh and blood rather than carbon/steel.
The Votann models are definitely turning out much better than I'd initially feared (especially since the Necromunda Squats--those are exactly what Space Dwarves ought to be, in my mind). One critique I have is that while I really appreciate the inclusion of female options, the heads feel kind of... Off. Personally I'd prefer to see them thicker and bulkier, like they've really been hitting the Dwarfy protein shakes; as it stands, they feel just a bit too sleek and small for their otherwise chunky bodies. 'Course, I'm also the sort to prefer my Dwarf women with beards (the way Tolkien intended--shakes fist angrily at Amazon), so I might just be biased. All the same, I'm looking forward to the eventual release of the dorfs.
I'm a bit concerned about their rules, are the Legues going to be another MEQ army or are they going to make them more unique like T5 and 4" movement 🤔
@@nekrataali m4 would be more like it, if only because everyone that would have a move of 4 in whfb (humans, orcs/orks) has been zooming around at m6 for years in 40k. also ws3 and bs4 would need converting to the "target number" system (simple enough), and obviously initiative hasn't been a thing for ages (although it's definitely used in 'munda!). i think i agree with you both, though… apart from being tough (and maybe also good at swinging fists), the less they resemble space marines rules-wise, the better i'll like them
They revealed the star block a while ago, if I recall correctly they are 1w 5"m 4+sv with space marine stats, the Sergeant gains an additional wound though
@@FunnyTaco143 check the carousel in the article. It's a little hard to make out, but his replacements are below the knee. He has the same 'knee armour' as his fellow kin.
Not in the slightest. While yes they are better than the imperium, they aren’t good, not even as good as the tau. For instance let’s say that there is this imperial world rich in natural resources. If the squats so wish, they will move in and kick out the native inhabitants so they could set up shop. Or possibly just kill them.
In my head cannon, the only reason AI rebelled was it was being treated as slave labour by humanity. The Kin's solution to this: give their AI rights, no rebellion happens.
I'm thinking (and hoping) the AI bois are just integrated into their units and society as a whole, like they said in the lore, and are largely counted as the same in game, maybe with extra strat or special rule potential if not characters, idk.
Sorry, entirely irrelevant to *this* video, but I could have sworn I saw the Ultramarines Heresy lore video in my Recommendeds the other day, and now it appears to he gone. Hope the algorithm didn't eat it or something, and either I'm just seeing things or you took it back down deliberately.
It's uploaded and ready, but scheduled for next week. Sometimes RUclips gets confused with that sort of thing but it's MUCH easier to work that way around!
@@ArbitorIan Fairy snuff. Lovely stuff, generally btw. Edit: Ah, wait, I've literally just seen your post from yesterday saying you'd recorded and scheduled some videos and here are the thumbnails - that'll be what I saw... (facepalm)
I was kind of hoping for big beards and rune iconography. They seem less like space dwarves and more like little humans, which I understand that's what they are, but the dwarven aesthetic is what would have really drawn me to them.
Okay, the aesthetics for the Leagues is really growing on me. The first model didn't really convey what we'd be getting all that well (not to mention the hairstyle and its...unfortunate real world associations), and I had some niggling doubts because of it. These look amazing, though. I particularly like the variety on display for just a single squad, from females and Ironkin to the more old school beards and biker shades.
RE Ironkin & Men of Iron: According to Luetin, at least, the AI robots from the time of the Machine Revolt were divided between Men of Stone and Men of Iron. Humans created the former, who in turn created the latter to better serve Humanity. It was the Men of Iron, who were more advanced and more independent, who seem to have rebelled. Leading to a war between them and the Men of Stone and, when the Men of Stone were largely spent in the fighting, humans themselves. At least, that's one theory. Evidence within the lore is spotty at best, and even deducing that much requires a great deal of extrapolation from scant canon details. It may, indeed, be pure bullshit, for all we know. If it IS true, Ironkin, despite the name, may have more in common with the Men of Stone than with the Men of Iron.
Yeah, it's all based on like one paragraph in a box out in the 4ed codex (??) - which I'm sure has been turned into WAY more by the community. But they could really take it in any direction.
@@WozWozEre Oh, absolutely. Luetin tried to spin wild theories about how Zoats make sense in modern 40K. Zoats make no sense in modern 40K, because they were written in Rogue Trader under vastly different creative decisions. Luetin is a very good fanfiction writer, to be sure, but in terms of "actual" lore, there's very little _there_ there. It's doubtful the writers at GW put as much thought into the concepts of "Men of Stone" as Luetin did.
Fully equal AI makes sense, you wouldn't see much animosity against machines if the organic kin are also 3D printed
This was my thinking. All of the Kin are created to serve a purpose within their society. Literally manufactured for that purpose. It would be weird, in fact, if they considered Ironkin any lesser for not being made of flesh and blood.

Can't wait to swap all the helmet free heads with Warhammer Fantasy Dwarf Slayers
Need me some epic mohawk squats
iron kin just look like a head swap especially with those kin that already have metal legs
Metal feet. And it makes sense, because why the hell would the kin differentiate themselves from the iron kin when they themselves are just as manufactured. It’s just by flesh and blood rather than carbon/steel.
I quite like this squad. Looks to me like it might double as a Kill Team squad... If so, I might pick one up
Omg i need Them! Especially For a Kill Team 😍
Mannn when will you upload world eaters deep dive i am waiting here bro
They should be WS4, BS3, S3, T4, initiative 2, LD9, and move 3" like proper dwarfs.
@@MajorMarmite huh must've missed that one until now, weird that all that bulky armour is only as effective as a carapace armour
No Squatcast for the new Exo-suits?
Look cool probably won’t play them but there sculpts look nice.
They neutered their beautiful dwarven beards!
I don't get the joke behind "L7 missile launcher"...it reminds me of Mass Effect...?
Beardless wazzocks
I hope to see them in a dawn of war game but that just me:)
I don't see it being a "flesh OR robot" full double kit - that would require double legs. I don't see so many additional parts in a GW kit.
The bit about mechanical limb upgrades suggests that Hearthkyn can use the mechanical legs. It’s not clear whether the reverse is true.
@@rorythomas9469 the 'normal' legs could just be mech legs with cloth over them
The first guy shown has robot legs that look exactly like the ironkin
@@FunnyTaco143 check the carousel in the article. It's a little hard to make out, but his replacements are below the knee. He has the same 'knee armour' as his fellow kin.
so are squats officially the "good guys" in 40K?!
I feel like they didn't pick the best option from that squad for the first preview.
I've been hoping for the return of the Squats since their removal and I still take them in 9th counting as Scions (for now).
Wait, I didn't know Bobby had a channel. Does anybody know what it's called? Thanks in advance!

Chaos Votann or bust!
Is it weird that I just want them all to just be Ironkin? xD
Fingers crossed the get a kill team
Long Live Votann Z ⭐ ... ✌️💚
acronym? i thought "L7" was just a canny way of saying "square" (as in someone uncool and/or a "party-pooper")
10 squat box? ^^
Robosquats👍
I like how these Squats have anime aesthetics like the Tau :P
(facepalm)
#squatgoals
soyjack RUclipsr, art imitates reality
:D)
“Alt right hair”….get a grip mate.
I was kind of hoping for big beards and rune iconography. They seem less like space dwarves and more like little humans, which I understand that's what they are, but the dwarven aesthetic is what would have really drawn me to them.
Holding out for the HQs to still be carried around on shields.
@@Xick If they can sci-fi that up, it would be incredible.
All I know is that everyone is either wearing a helmet or have a face with a beard.
Boring but I like my Warhammer dwarfs with beards.
Are we really afraid of a haircut? Goddamn this is the first I heard of this.
Leutin has a habit of presenting headcanon/extremely tenuous theories as fact. His videos are great but aren't to be taken as gospel.
