One thing to take account for too is during the really cold times you dont want the soil to be really wet and the cold alone won't do much but if it's that cold and it snows/rains than it's more likely to damage the plants! Moister is the biggest enemy for the plants when it's cold and wind also plays a part since a common 7mph wind can make it feel 10 degrees colder for us and the plants! :)
Here in San Diego my Figs are all waking up. My Corky honey fig cutting was amazingly the first to wake up. My Black Mission kept most of its leaves over the winter too. I think the lowest temp we saw this winter was around 38-40, so it's close to Fig growing heaven here.
I bet the trees in the greenhouse will be fine. There should be enough thermal mass in there to keep the roots from getting down to 6° in just one night. It would take longer than that. Plus it warms up in there each day. I predict no problem!
Hope you’ll take us along for your tomato seed shopping again this year. Living in zone 5 I’m here for the tomatoes lol. My all time favorite so far is Granny Cantrell, but I’m new to trying lots of varieties. I’ve added goose creek, orange banana, and Ananas noir to my list of 20 this year.
Pretty soon I'll be finally publishing my sauce video where I compare 20+ sauce tomatoes. That goose Creek is super impressive. Even when made into sauce.
Animals eat my fig bark and any other tree they can find. The bark around the base. Also every year my pawpaws grow like 2 feet and then come winter something eats the whole thing to like 3 inches high.
Last winter, mice ate "all" the bark from the 2 foot tall fig trees. The trees put up shoots from the roots, but that set them back a month. This winter, I cut some window screen into 3 inch strips and wrapped the fig shoots. We will see the results when they are uncovered in March.
Maybe grab a couple of less important smaller trees (1-3 gal). Take it in and wake it up under lights to see how it performs. If it rots, the anxiety sets in. If they do fine, you have a couple of fairly large fig trees to baby indoors until April. Also not fun, but perhaps necessary :(
Roos I live in Allentown Pa sp I'm very close to Philly. I currently love growing citrus in pots I would love to start growing figs. I watch alot of your videos. What type should I grow to start with?????
Thank you for the response much appreciated! I went with the Chicago Hardy for my first. I will watch some of your other content for proper planting and care.

Snow is a great insulator.

Higher soil moisture level helps protect the roots.

Sounds like Bambi or his relatives found your pawpaw patch.

Check out my spreadsheet in the description. The second sheet at the bottom lists the best ones for our location.
There's also a video I did this year about the top 20 fig varieties for humid places.

Wow. That's great news. Do you happen to have a photo of that setup, Troy? I'd like to see it.
@@RossRaddi i will takes some picture of my outside boxes i have in ground trees in the next im home and its light out
Why do you keep your greenhouse covered with a tarp?
How many hours of sun do those fig trees get?
Not enough. Like 5-7 hours depending on the time of year. They really need 9-12.
