That happens when you have children. Your voice changes it becomes more robust and dark - sometimes lower. A woman’s voice doesn’t reach full vocal maturity until her mid thirties.
Bae Claus so even though she’s singing the same notes they sound deeper in a sense? Dark voices have full, weighty notes while a bright voice is lighter, girlier, “higher” sounding. Light voices are like Mariah Carey, Leona Lewis, and Beyoncé in destiny’s child. Darker voices are Jennifer Hudson, Jazmine Sullivan, and current Beyoncé. I hope that makes sense :)
Brandy showed off her lower register in "Anybody" (from the Full Moon album) - esp. the line "we don't want...no one to know" near the end of the song. 👍
Beyonce's voice is very much changing. However change is inevitable, natural and often exciting. There's a difference between a damaged voice and a mature voice. Many singers from Tina Turner to Shirley Bassey navigated interesting music and careers regardless of vocal change. Beyonce can obviously do this too given how much vocal interpretive wit she has shown.
Also maybe this is an evolution type thing like a mother’s voice gets deeper to calm the baby?? I’ve never got this many likes before 🙈 thanks guys! ❤️
Rhe Rhe it’s true. A woman’s voice does get deeper after having children. Mine is much deeper after 4. I asked my doctor about it and she confirmed it.
I honestly love her newer darker vocals. They give her this artsy tone full of rich personality. Bigger and otherside are good examples of how her dark voice tells a story.
Haunted was her best song on the Beyoncé self titled album as well as 6 inch heels I felt like she gave us her natural speaking/ phone voice and it’s so damn seductive!
She’s had a cesarian, birthed 3 children, why is anyone shocked her voice has changed ?! Her body has changed forever and this woman still serves a powerful, emotive amazing voice!!! She can’t be compared to her previous work, she’s a human being who is LEVELS above the rest still.
But its like that for literally all singers though. Everyone has their own voice, you know when its them. This don't just apply to Beyonce alone. Lmao.
I definitely noticed early signs of her voice changing sometime during the Mrs. Carter Show tour and I honestly prefer her vocals rich & deep although I do miss some of the "lightness" that used to be present in her singing when she'd go for these high crystal clear notes. However, the deeper tone works in her favor - I feel like it adds character to her singing and makes it sound more emotional. People used to criticize Beyoncé for sounding emotionless in her songs. That's something she's improved drastically since Crazy in Love.
Get Fit With Raven Love my sister is the same way. Even when it’s that time of the month for her, her voice drops down an octave. I notice that once my mom enter the early stages of menopause her voice is much heavy then what it was 10yrs ago. I use to think it came from her yelling at us about cleaning her kitchen😂😂😂
Partly, though I think it's more to do with water retention, and extra blood flow, during pregnancy loosening vocal cords. Also with age women produce less oestrogen. That gives the little testosterone they produce free reign, which can cause masculine traits. It's why old women sometimes get a moustache, lol. @@Seeingisntbelieving
No hate but when I already saw the title of this video, I said "pregnancy." I'm surprised this is not common knowledge. Even Whitney spoke on it in an Oprah interview, how her voice changed after pregnancy. Also, Whitney and Mariah on how menstruation plays a huge factor in vocals. During menstruation, vocals become deeper. Thank you for sharing and spreading the knowledge
I just saw this comment and i said the same thing. Its like Khloe Kardashian her voice was so deep i said it a couple times but no ones else noticed it but it was like she "sounded pregnant" is that a thing? like you could just hear it in her voice
Beyoncé’s voice started changing around 2012-2013 especially during Beyoncé’s self titled album. Her voice was so much darker in that album which was a change from 4
Sa Turn she could still hit very high notes from her first album. The significant change happened during the Mrs. Carter era where she changed the sound boards and started lowering the octaves of each song. But you make a valid point. She could always hit low notes even during Destiny Child’s days but her voice significantly changed permanent after having Blue so the charge started in like 2011-2012. But she kept the lower register from 2013- present.
Yes. I also think Mrs. Carter's voice has changed. I prefer the richness and depth of her voice now, . I literally passed out twice listening to Spirit.
You killed this dude! I have no idea what the heck u are talking about and I’m loving that u spent so much time analyzing how sexy a woman’s voice gets after childbirth. Great job!
Eddo128 Mariah used to smoke. She smoked before debuting but Tommy made her quit and she started smoking again after the divorce. she’s talked about it many times. she’s even sang about it in her music lol.
I don't think we can go by Beyoncé's studio recordings. She tends to be more controlled/restrained, but goes all out with live vocals. Sure, her voice has evolved naturally, but she still has her range. The Gift album, shows it's a stylistic choice. She can go up there, if necessary, for the particular song. She just seems to be smarter about protecting her voice for the longer run than being showy all the time. Belting high notes consistently can take a toll on the voice, especially for a long period of time.
That's my take....... her range is still the same....her ease is relatively still the same...her voice is just mature and dark and naturally sits lower.......u can also tell she's very particular about protecting her voice...
@@EisirvanaIusaasetamenYi umm beyonce prime was bday to 4 every vocal expert knows that dont let the fact your fan cloud you from the truth beyonce in bday era was perfection she could support belts up to F5 sometimes even g5
Yea I was listening to Dangerously in Love album the other day, and she almost doesn't sound nothing like she did back in the day. Her voice has matured greatly over the years. She sounded so good at Coachella.
This video is brilliant. Not only for the topic but your editing and references tied everything together so wonderfully. Beyoncé’s voice is rich, dark and velvety now and you conveyed that wonderfully! So glad this video brought me to your channel
Yes her voice has changed. But u cant just base her range on her albums because what she sings live is beyond studio version. Beys voice now is defs more thick and deep compared to dc to bday era. But Beyonce can achieve all this range live.
I don’t think he was commenting on Bey’s range becoming lower to say that it’s no longer physically possible for her to hit higher notes. He’s simply noticing a change in Bey’s preferred range, likely because she’s trying to preserve her voice. Just ask Mariah Carey what happens when you continue belting in the upper register for decades on end. Also, he does analyze her live performances several times throughout this video.
Where is her live supported belts above Eb5 tho her high belts have diminished incredibly and she cant support high notes anymore if she doesnt do something soon she gonna end up like Christina Aguilera with poor technique and strained live notes
I've noticed that for a while now! Glad someone finally made a discussion about it! Makes a lot of sense. I'd also argue that her technique /voice placement in particular is a little different now. Either way she's a beast!!v
I KNEW I wasn’t going crazy!! When I watched Coachella, I was like.. her voice got deeper, I also feel like her runs are different now as well. I just am not an expert in music like that so I didn’t know the technicalities of it all.
Beyoncé has matured her voice. When she did Coachella, I knew straight away she adjusted the tones to suit her current voice. As with all vocal legends e.g. Mariah and Barbra Streisand, they have the musical expertise to be able to adjust and make the song work great. Her new voice really started showing back in 2013 in her Beyoncé album. Listen to the track called Ghost.
Mariah’s voice still changed!! She’s a natural auto by many measures in looking at her lower register and natural speaking range but accessed an entire soprano belt range due to her nodes and being young. She went from rich high notes during her debut, to the girlish light voice during the Daydream era, to a raspy sultryness during Butterfly, and through the 2000s until now she has matured into her lower alto range, seen on Caution. All awesome phases.
I’ve been listening to Beyoncé‘s vocals for years on her album and live I’ve been to all her tours but her voice is definitely changing for the better she sounds better and better every time But I really enjoyed this video can’t wait for part two
MTV wants to get rid of Michael Jackson. They are saying that they want to remove him from everywhere his music from the radio stations. Without Michael Jackson their would be no MTV or blacks on their. Keep his music going dont listen to them.
I am in awe of the beauty and power that her voice has evolved to. Also the depth of what she is singing is so beautiful served by the richness and depth of her voice. I actually think her voice is so much more soulful and beautiful now than it has ever has been. Also having seen her sing Love on Top fairly recently she still has those powerful highs in her vocal tool box but seems to be choosing to or prefers to work in a lower register, perhaps to preserve her voice or perhaps also that it serves the more serious subject matter of the songs she's currently singing.
I think it’s the latter. She sings based on the song. Not based on proving she has “soul” like most black “sangers.” Seems pretty obvious lot of people try to sing songs with “soul” to get an expected rise from the audience. Beyoncé is actually vocally interesting. You never know how she will approach the song. Most singers you know they are about to hit you with their money shot every time. That’s personally boring
Wow, so interesting. To be honest, I was scared to click because I thought this would be one of those videos saying Beyoncé was cloned and that's why her voice changed. But this was real informative. Thanks for teaching me something today.
The point is; *we need more power ballads!* O'Neil, you & Dileesa are so insightful ✨ I had no idea that childbirth had such an effect on a woman's voice; bearing the twins must have really been a new experience in many ways. This makes me think of Whitney Houston & the lowering of her voice especially after Bobbi Kristina was born. May they rest in Perfect Peace ⛅
Not just childbirth. Any hormonal changes in a woman can affect her voice. I recall Whitney & Mariah's joint interview with oprah, and they mentioned how menstruation can cause a voice to drop in octaves.
@Chi Non I'm not a Beyonce Stan but I really like Spirit; if it weren't for the shots she was throwing at the Bible in the beginning of "Bigger", I would love that as well. I get what you mean though, the masses don't support ballads as much especially in this generation. However the style of music she promotes is one of the reasons why she's considered as an iconic performer & not a legendary vocalist...
I didn't watch your videos in a while and your editing got extremely good, and the explanations and examples super concise. It felt like it lasted half as much!
If you go by her dad Mathew Knowles...she is 39...ansd will be 40 in September. He said she was born in 1979. They shaved off 2 yrs when Destiny's Child made it big!
I see this as just natural evolution. Unlike most singers, Beyoncé switches her tone quite often. Typically interpreting the song vocally in a way that emotionally connects with her. She really doesn’t get enough credit. Her vocals on the live CMA were extremely “dark.” Dark is stereotypically the preferred tone style; at least within the black community. I’m glad I’ve gotten to hear Beyoncé’s voice in a multitude of colors. “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” is a recent example of her showing the various ways that she can and does use her vocal instrument.
All of this! 👏 There are tons of videos analyzing the vocal techniques she uses and counting the notes in her range but I'd love to see someone extensively tackle her musical expression as it relates to subject matter and mood. Some people always say "she doesn't emote" but I don't think there are many human emotions she hasn't expressed or interpreted with the way she colors certain words and phrases. She's quite nuanced.
chantoya17 Like you, I would love to hear someone actually break that down. This video doesn’t sound like someone who’s studied her voice much - or maybe understand all of the intricacies of the voice. She actually emotes the most to me, not just trying to sing as soulfully and beautifully as possible so people will give her praise. But she sings with soul, emotion and science, because she understands her voice more than the average amazing singer. So you have to really pay attention to see how intentional she is with her vocals. No singer makes me feel more, and it didn’t just start. I’ve felt that way since early on her career; I’ve just begun to understand more of what it is I’ve been hearing and feeling. Her elocution is impeccable to me. Also, she has been more hip hop heavy this decade of her career, so I would expect her to use her lower register because it fits more sonically. If she sings bright/non hip hop songs like CYFTLT it’s a completely different stylistic choice. Even DC has a lot of her best vocals in the background on the songs of their albums (like Happy Face) because of the fast singing, wasn’t much room to do all of that on the lead vocal without forcing it.
@@christophergarner180 I agree with a lot of what you've expressed, especially the "soul, emotion and science" part. It's too bad she probably won't get her proper due credit for her vocals until after she's dead and gone. I mean, most people are aware that she can really sing but her singing is not fully analyzed and praised in the way her music and performances are, even by most fans and vocal critics. Do you think this has something to do with general ignorance of her vocal artistry or is it because she doesn't market herself as a traditional balladeer so people don't listen for certain things? Anyway I really feel like she is the most *complete* singer in pop music today, arguably ever.
Eeeeeeeeeh this doesn't mean she can't hit those notes.....she's always had low peaking songs belting wise I.e DISPAPPEAR(2008), flaws and all(2008), Smash into u(2008), I miss u(2011) ......... I also think preservation is key to her...especially that she works so much
I LOOOOVE her voice now. She delves into that deep southern voice she has. It’s gotten deeper and richer over time and it’s great . She used to have a bit more of a higher pitch I guess you can say. Love her low voice
Actually, the last time I remember her voice being bright and "light" is during "The Beyonce Experience". After that it started getting darker and it only kept going ever since, most notably after childbirth. She could ( and still can ) hit the same notes, but they would now require more effort. Then again, she's a mezzo soprano near her forties so I don't mind her not hitting F5s anymore.
@@kojoyamoah414 no,she wasn't LMFAO.Losing range doesn't mean worse singing. She gained a lot of vocal ability throughout the years, only getting better control and complexity.Yeah, her voice got deeper, but that is natural and only means that her voice CHANGED.it is different from what it was.It doesn't mean it is worse. She is in her vocal ability prime right now.
@@josilenenascimento4644 girl listen... you do not love Beyonce more than I do but that's the goddamn truth.. the kind of singing Beyonce did during the Beyonce experience era Way exceeds, anything she's ever done since or before. Yes Beyonce's Voice has deepened and darkened but she's lost a brightness to her tone that used to make her voice very special.. her voice wasn't as dark but it was silky, healthier and her vocals were stronger and effortless and that's not only in terms of range, agility and control too
Thank you for this video, O'Neill ! I certainly agree that her voice is deeper, darker and moistened, in comparison with the beginning of her career. This, indeed due to her getting older, but also by becoming a mother. I am not a singer (but a dedicated BeyHiver since day one) but I did become a mom of two in this past two years and my voice also got way deeper then before. Loved the video! I subscribed
My Voice Changed during my pregnancy it got really deep 3 yrs after my Pregnancy I noticed my voice suddenly changes on its on while talking its light then dark back to light lol it's so weird but that's what happens when the baby press all your organs upwards again your vocal cord / airway
Nothing to do with your vocal cords getting pressed upon, but youd body's hormones would have changed afterwards, potentially lengthening or thickening the vocal folds.
I lept out of my chair and cast this to my tv so fast!! Love your videos so much, and I have no idea what a B2 or G6 or whatever notes are you talk about😂😂
B2 and G6 are notes on a keyboard/piano. A piano has 11 keys within each octave and there are 8 octaves. The letters are the "keys" the numbers are the octaves. Octaves measure how high a voice is. High octaves are usually when the voice is the loudest because the voice carries the furthest in terms of volume. I hope that helps.
While I agree with what you’re saying I also believe that some of the changes in her voice are not by chance. I believe that she’s been training and strengthening her vocal cords over time. So that she could sing more in those lower tones. I absolutely love how she began using her voice beginning with the album 4. I think it was both age, life changes and strategy from a vocal coach.
Right before you even mentioned childbirth I knew that was the reason. I have 3 children and my voice has definitely changed since having my children. That might be why some artists don’t have children til late in their careers or not at all.
This is a great video. I agree with much of what you said though a lot of times her highest notes comes in her harmonic arrangements. Go to TayBeyNippy's channel. He has a vocal range video on The Gift and the things that both of us are saying is very evident in the record. But either way, she's not belting in the mid/high 5th octave like she used to. My opinion is that though her voice has changed, her musicianship has grown. She knows what the limitations of her voice is and I also noticed that whatever notes she uses as a better understanding of where they need to placed for "narrating the song." She uses her harmonic arrangements more judicially and that makes them more effective as far noticing why she places them there as well as how she layers them. Her head voice is darker too. Her tone is more womanly. But she still has great stamina, agility, precision and control even with the limitations of her present voice. I rather hear the growth in musicianship and I hear it especially on her new album. I can't wait to hear part 2; hopefully soon. I love your videos.
What does age have to do with anything? Have you ever been to a black southern church and heard one of those 60-year-old women belt out high note? Have you not heard of Duranice Pace, The Clark Sisters etc that are well aged grandmothers they can still hit high notes.

She’s had a cesarian, birthed 3 children, why is anyone shocked her voice has changed ?! Her body has changed forever and this woman still serves a powerful, emotive amazing voice!!! She can’t be compared to her previous work, she’s a human being who is LEVELS above the rest still.
Regardless if her voice was higher during her younger age or deeper at her older age , when she opens her mouth YOU KNOW WHO SHE IS. period☺️

Yup. Period. You would know she is the singer evenif you don't see the video?
But its like that for literally all singers though.

I love how beyonce keeps adjusting to her voice perfectly... she still sounds so good live. You can tell she takes her craft very seriously
Yes she does, I love Beyonce, and I dont know if this man is trying to come for her or what., but he is barking up the wrong tree.

Her voice has clearly changed but the lady can SANG....
I’m no singer however after I had my twins I can no longer yell at a high pitch... nothing but air. Now I understand why lol

I notice that once my mom enter the early stages of menopause her voice is much heavy then what it was 10yrs ago. I use to think it came from her yelling at us about cleaning her kitchen😂😂😂
Wow! Interesting!
Stomach muscles needed to support that voice get loose after childbirth.

She growing spiritually, emotionally, and physically. We can really feel her music within.
Beyoncé’s voice started changing around 2012-2013 especially during Beyoncé’s self titled album. Her voice was so much darker in that album which was a change from 4
Actually her voice started to change a lot during the Beyonce Experience. That's when it started. And after every album she got deeper and deeper.

Do Mariah Carey's voice is changing next. I've been trying to figure out what's going on there.
lfutrell82 you’re about 20 years late ... her voice has come and gone
that’s an easy one. nodules, poor lifestyle habits such as smoking and drinking, age and stress. a LOT of things contributed to Mariah’s voice.

I think her voice is the best it’s been ever. I think her giving birth changed her voice and just age.
She evolved and reached a perfect level of maturity. And since she is always improving her vocal prime is yet to come so 😍😍😍

Exactly.
Big facts, her vocal ability hasn’t died down at all if you ask me. But I have noticed that her newer music is lower
Thank u
Where is her live supported belts above Eb5 tho her high belts have diminished incredibly and she cant support high notes anymore if she doesnt do something soon she gonna end up like Christina Aguilera with poor technique and strained live notes

Who said she didn’t ?
Beyoncé has matured her voice.
When she did Coachella, I knew straight away she adjusted the tones to suit her current voice.
As with all vocal legends e.g. Mariah and Barbra Streisand, they have the musical expertise to be able to adjust and make the song work great.
Her new voice really started showing back in 2013 in her Beyoncé album. Listen to the track called Ghost.
And we thought Mariah Carey voice was changing until she did that bottle cap challenge

I like your observation
The point is; *we need more power ballads!*
O'Neil, you & Dileesa are so insightful ✨
I had no idea that childbirth had such an effect on a woman's voice; bearing the twins must have really been a new experience in many ways.
This makes me think of Whitney Houston & the lowering of her voice especially after Bobbi Kristina was born. May they rest in Perfect Peace ⛅
@Chi Non How did any of her songs do in the charts in the last five years?
Not just childbirth. Any hormonal changes in a woman can affect her voice. I recall Whitney & Mariah's joint interview with oprah, and they mentioned how menstruation can cause a voice to drop in octaves.
Menstruating must affect women differently then. Céline recorded My Heart will Go On while on her 'girlie time'. She nailed those high notes.

@@jesuischerie224 what kinda shit that changing up a bday for fame ☹😖
I see this as just natural evolution. Unlike most singers, Beyoncé switches her tone quite often. Typically interpreting the song vocally in a way that emotionally connects with her. She really doesn’t get enough credit. Her vocals on the live CMA were extremely “dark.” Dark is stereotypically the preferred tone style; at least within the black community. I’m glad I’ve gotten to hear Beyoncé’s voice in a multitude of colors. “Can You Feel The Love Tonight” is a recent example of her showing the various ways that she can and does use her vocal instrument.
All of this! 👏
There are tons of videos analyzing the vocal techniques she uses and counting the notes in her range but I'd love to see someone extensively tackle her musical expression as it relates to subject matter and mood. Some people always say "she doesn't emote" but I don't think there are many human emotions she hasn't expressed or interpreted with the way she colors certain words and phrases. She's quite nuanced.
👏👏👏👏👏
chantoya17 Like you, I would love to hear someone actually break that down.
When you said “so I thought I’d give her a call” for a split second I thought you meant you were calling beyoncé 💀

Nothing to do with your vocal cords getting pressed upon, but youd body's hormones would have changed afterwards, potentially lengthening or thickening the vocal folds.
I lept out of my chair and cast this to my tv so fast!! Love your videos so much, and I have no idea what a B2 or G6 or whatever notes are you talk about😂😂
I laughed so hard at this! Thank you so much for watching!
Dude! You're a vocal SCIENTIST! Hence forth, I'm calling you Dr. Gerald! Go head Doc!
It’s Bey, I feel like she can still hit them notes if she really tried
This is a great video. I agree with much of what you said though a lot of times her highest notes comes in her harmonic arrangements. Go to TayBeyNippy's channel. He has a vocal range video on The Gift and the things that both of us are saying is very evident in the record. But either way, she's not belting in the mid/high 5th octave like she used to.
My opinion is that though her voice has changed, her musicianship has grown. She knows what the limitations of her voice is and I also noticed that whatever notes she uses as a better understanding of where they need to placed for "narrating the song."
She uses her harmonic arrangements more judicially and that makes them more effective as far noticing why she places them there as well as how she layers them.
Her head voice is darker too. Her tone is more womanly. But she still has great stamina, agility, precision and control even with the limitations of her present voice. I rather hear the growth in musicianship and I hear it especially on her new album. I can't wait to hear part 2; hopefully soon. I love your videos.
