Holmes is supposedly dying from Tapanuli fever, a rare tropical sickness he contracted while working on a case, and Dr. Watson is sent to help. Given that he was ignorant of his friend's illness, Watson is shocked. Mrs. Hudson claims that Holmes hasn't eaten or drunk anything in three days.
Holmes warns Watson not to approach him since the illness is extremely contagious. He insults Watson's abilities and truly despises his care, startling and hurting the doctor. Despite the fact that Watson wants to investigate Holmes alone or bring in an expert, Holmes demands that Watson wait many hours before asking for help. While he waits, Watson checks a variety of things in Holmes' room. Watson touches things, which infuriates Holmes.[ summary from wikipedia.org]
