my favorite song from them is definitely hallelujah. just an incredible arrangement, amazing chord changes, great vocal melodies, great lyrics... and sounds like nothing else
Hallelujah is also my favorite! The sprawling melodies and complex chords floating over the lush arrangements is just so incomparably gorgeous and dreamy. I love Prefab Sprout
I was obsessed with Prefab Sprout at the time, and tried to get Paddy to produce my band in 1989. I didn't know but I'd called him at his family home in Consett (due to a famous mutual buddy passing on his number). However, Tracie Young had just joined (post-Jam/Respond)... little did I know that six years previous she and Paddy had a spat in the music press... the next day I got a call from Kitchenware boss, Keith Armstrong, telling me 'Never call again!'. Can't tell you how disappointed that 20-yr-old working class South Yorkshire lad was, and how I restrained myself from calling Armstrong 'a rude wanker' before I got off the blower I'll never know.
One of my favourite albums of all time. Superb! And, in the background of this video is the album cover of the very first album I owned (as a kid). LOL!
Love the Prefabs so much., You should also check out a great audio commentary on the album with Thomas Dolby and Wendy/Martin from The Sprouts on 80sography podcast.
I take offence to schmaltzy in this context though I know exactly what you mean. The later sound became so polished that it certainly smacks of schmaltz but the music demands it, it wasn't just a varnish on some muzak.
YOU'RE BOTH blabbering on far too much. The least you could do is play some examples of what you tout as laudible, instead of.... well...blabbering on as to how you are both so brilliant...
Just love this band , Paddy is a brilliant songwriter and just loved all there stuff .Still play it regularly because its timeless
glad to see literally anything on youtube covering prefab sprout. theyre my favorite band. i dont think theres anything like them, especially on swoon

thank you for this
A masterpiece, agreed. Far superior to the schmaltzy stuff that came after (but Golden Calf is also a top tune!).

@@prodigalsorcerer1415 OK, perhaps schmaltzy is a bit harsh. The songcraft was still there, but the over-slick production just makes it bland (imho).
@@geej12 That's fair, it's a divisive sound for sure.
