This is by far my favorite ABBA song; the chorus gets me every time, and I have to start dancing at the piano part at the end every single time I hear it. This band was/is truly phenomenal. I wish I had gone to their live concerts but I wasn’t born yet. 😔🎤😆

For nearly everybody in the audience here, in Jan., '79, this would have been the very first time that they heard 'Chiquitita', considering that it was still to be released commercially. But you see them clapping along to the song. Looking carefully at the individuals in the audience, some appear to be in their 60s and 70s. It's amazing to think that maybe one or two of them had lived through the era of Charlie Chaplin and Prohibition in the 20s and Laurel & Hardy and the Great Depression in the 30s and here they are now witnessing Abba live!
Pete: even now, I would imagine that this televisual event, if it was shown in its entirety again today, on any main or national TV channel in most civilised countries, say at 9pm on a Saturday night, would still draw a great viewership. It's a sincere performance to just entertain and to be entertained; the show has a multitude of contemporary talented stars. Nobody is trying to act the big-shot or be 'on message'. There are no crazy camera movements nor aggravating constant flickering screens (which today is cover for mediocrity). Everybody knows this event was for a good cause. It was a great promotion for America and American popular culture when the show was, I believe, exported for broadcast around various countries in 1979, the year of the child. The Marxists must have been a tad envious - and a tad curious too. I don't mind Abba not singing live here. I don't think their performance here was live. English was not their first language.

I attended the October 2, 1979 concert at Radio City Music Hall in NYC. But for me, the concert was secondary. I actually conned my way into the inner sanctum of the venue (I claimed that I worked for Rolling Stone Magazine), met Stig Andersson, Benny and Bjorn. After the concert, I used the same lie to get into the after show party at the Atlantic Records building where I met and kissed (on the mouth) Frida and Agnetha. Kissing Agnetha was the most surreal moment I ever experienced in my life.

Oh wow just found this. Thanks so much for posting. I remember watching it on TV, but totally forgot that Gilda (may she rest in peace) introduced them. How wonderfully hilarious that she intentionally mispronounces their full names (Goran Bror Benny Andersson, Bjorn Christian Ulvaeus, etc.) to wonderful comedic effect. I'm sure ABBA loved it. I wasn't sure if they were Spanish at first, with songs like Chiquita and Fernando, but, I liked their sound, and catchy music. Over 4 million dollars to help children around the world. 3 years ago the songwriters gave away 100 % of the royalties: “So that is why, from now on and into the future, 100 % of the royalties to Chiquitita will go to help towards the promotion of rights for girls. Chiquitita means ‘little girl’ and we must never abandon the little girls,” Björn concluded. I hope this inspires other artists to do the same.

Oh wow just found this. Thanks so much for posting. I remember watching it on TV, but totally forgot that Gilda (may she rest in peace) introduced them. How wonderfully hilarious that she intentionally mispronounces their full names (Goran Bror Benny Andersson, Bjorn Christian Ulvaeus, etc.) to wonderful comedic effect. I'm sure ABBA loved it. Back then, I never missed an ABBA TV appearance, as rare as that was in the US.
Gilda was on SNL in 1975 when ABBA was musical guest and were made fun of in subtitles under performance...was always upset how SNL treated ABBA

Although after 1979 ABBA started to decline in the music charts, they actually wrote some of their best and most unique songs in the early 1980s when they were about to disband. “The Visitors”, their last album, contains exceedingly beautiful and great compositions like “One of Us”, “Head Over Heels”, and “Two For The Price of One.” Then songs like “I Am The City” and the unreleased “Just Like That” were written too in the 80s. Many people overlook the fact that their best material came at the end of their careers.
What would it have felt like to be there? The public will have imagined that such beauty would become a hymn?
This was at the height of their career. Unfortunately, everything changed in the following years. I was only 17 then, but, I remember hearing them on the radio throughout the 70s, then in clubs. I wasn't sure if they were Spanish at first, with songs like Chiquita and Fernando, but, I liked their sound, and catchy music. Also did you know that ABBA for 35 years shared their royalty fees (50/50) with UNICEF? Over 4 million dollars to help children around the world. 3 years ago the songwriters gave away 100 % of the royalties: “So that is why, from now on and into the future, 100 % of the royalties to Chiquitita will go to help towards the promotion of rights for girls. Chiquitita means ‘little girl’ and we must never abandon the little girls,” Björn concluded. I hope this inspires other artists to do the same.
