- Made by The National Film Board 1956. The Yarra River begins in the highlands, seventy miles from Melbourne, winding its way through the city to Port Phillip Bay; the film follows the course of the river and features a variety of scenery and activities along its banks.
Lovely gentle film
Brings back many memories of swimming in the river at Wattandyte.

Thanks for another beaut upload. I've lived in Melbourne since 1977, with spells over in Perth & back home in Brisbane, & I've never heard the Dandenongs referred to as the 'Highlands' before, sometimes they're called the hills but not highlands. There's the 'High Country' but that's the Omeo & Dargo high plains. How very different Melbourne looks nowadays compared to 1956. Curious to see a train running across the now disused Queen St. bridge on the way to either St. Kilda or Port Melbourne.
I think they were referring to the hills around Warburton, the only shot of the Dandenongs was in the background of the Lilydale quarry. I think it's the eastern section of what's known as the central highlands. I always thought that was Macedon, Daylesford etc but Wiki includes Toolangi and Mt Beenak as the East Central Highlands so there you go..

I think the correct description should begin along the lines as described in Wikipedia "From its source in the Yarra Ranges, it flows 242 km west through the Yarra Valley which opens out into plains as it winds its way through Greater Melbourne before emptying into Hobsons Bay in northernmost Port Phillip"

Thanks for providing that information. "Highlands" terminology may reflect our changing language patterns over the years do you think?
As an afterthought "Highlands is probably a more NSW centric term.In those days you might go for a Sunday drive to the Dandenongs (Upper Ferntree Gully,Sherbrook Forest,Puffing Billy)or spend a day in the hills whereas if you went for a weekend in the Yarra Valley you would most likely head up to Warburton in the Yarra Ranges or perhaps Marysville to a health spa or trout fishing on the river.
Houseboats on the Yarra -- I did not see any in 2004 -- so they probably dissapeared from the river entirely by the 1990s.
So sad to hear at 05:38 'this was once the land of the aborigines. And on a hill overlooking the river, the last of the Yarra tribe of aborigines rests'
There were still Aboriginal people there but this film speaks of them in past tense!

My first and rather sad thought at seeing this was "There's not that much green left any more." 😢
Suburban sprawl, began post-1945, only now we're considering stopping it.
In act since then, it has resulted in Australian cities being the lowest density (pushing over more land) & most unaffordable (not allowing housing where demand is; eg midrises close to centres).

No doubt, as the history of the evolution of the English language demonstrates - the Australian dialect is no exception. Note how "plummy" the narrators' accents were in the 1960s & earlier. Making our 'voice', I expect, exportable & acceptable to the British audience's ear, for whom, I guess, these government films were made. It's also a part of that process of transplanting & assimilation of an 'anglo-ness' onto & into an alien Australian landscape & culture; albeit willows or church spires.
