    I loved my purple gremlin in-line six wish I still had it

    At introduction the Gremlin came standard with a 199 CID inline six, 232 CID and 258 CID optional, and a 304 (5-liter) V8 available. The base engine was the best performer of all subcompacts at the time, and the optional engines didn't disappoint.

    I'll never understand the appeal of the VW Bug. It ran like it had an oversized lawnmower engine. Had no heat and was cramped. With no looks ,the rear engine in snow was the only advantage.
    The rear A.M. defrosters had to be put in the front.😢

    I'd take any of these cars over the crap they're making now. These cars had steel bumpers, iron motors, and some plastic interior features. Now cars have plastic bumpers, engine parts, and all plastic interiors. New cars track your location, target you for advertising, require payment for subscriptions to use features, etc.

    6:12 The Pinto was never offered with a 3-speed manual. Air conditioning, radio, and power brakes were optional on most cars in those days, as were automatic, and in many cases, a heater and electric wipers.

    The Maverick was a good lookin cheap car. In later years base engine was the 300 cu inch with a 3 spd. It zipped. After 72 they got rid of the rust. I had a 72, never had any of the aforementioned problems. These speakers are using a script that doesn’t change vehicle to vehicle. Get real guys. Where is a domestic shit box today? We don’t make one. We need a Maverick, now! The producers of these series no little about vehicle. They repeat everything they have ever heard by every self proclaimed expert.

    I bought a 70 and half the first series in early 1970. I am sorry but it served me well for seven years and got good fuel economy and the engine was peppy and very dependable. I never had any problem with the interior fit and i enjoyed driving it.

      A stupidly modified '64 Tbird convertible, with that rounded rear wheel opening. Plus, that flairbird series was an opulent personal luxury car, bought by many celebrities, and competed at the same price as a Jaguar E-type. It wasn't even slightly a crappy car or from the 70's. Especially compared to the low build quality GM and Chrysler were putting out.

    The first new car I ever bought was a 71 Mercury Comet GT 302, automatic, bucket seats. I loved that car and that little 302 did not lack for get up and go. Never had one problem with it ever and I miss it to this day.

  • @timothykeith1367

    Gremlin is a kammback . Many compact SUVs are simarly truncated.
    Japanese subcompacts were tinny - but low cost helped them sell. More Pintos were sold than the entire '70s Toyota line.
    Dodge Aspen continued as M body through 1989

  • @saywhat2014
    @saywhat2014 2 дня назад +6

    The Gremlin was not a "Crappy" car. You could get a V8 if you wanted performance, (I had one with an AMC 304cu V8), and yes they were cheap but they
    were much more reliable than most cheap American cars and they were easy to work on. Tiered of listing these as "Crappy".
    If you did not like the way they looked, OK but that is no reason to be listed as a bad car.

    You forgot the AMC Pacer in that lineup. You know the fish bowl on wheels. You said the Gremlin looked like a car with back chopped off. My opinion it looked better than the AMC Pacer. The small Mustangs of the area were pretty bad to look at also.

    What caused the North American cars to fail in the 1970;s was the fact that all American cars were aimed at performance, Nixen killed performance. They tried to go luxury but that was a joke that killed sales.
    Japanese cars of teh 1970s was not better quality.

  • @maxr4448
    @maxr4448 3 дня назад +2

    The Gremlin was Gremlin, for it's looks. It wasn't a crappy car. They were made from AMC hornets. They only started selling the 4 banger because the Pacer stole sales. The Maverick was economy car that had FEW problems. The early Japanese Cars rust like Vegas! The VW Rabbit has horrible. All Fiats were horrible. Shall I go on.

    Don’t lay all the blame at the door of the Pinto. It was an industry thing. Roger Smith thinking buyers being fascinated with quality would pass with time. Hey Roger, when UR wrong UR really wrong. The industry was in a mindset of profit, rust rot, horrible service recalls and constant visits to dealer to get the same thing fixed 3 or 4 times.

    Under performance was not the fault of manufacturers. The government mandate and laws for the control of emissions resulted in much lower compression ratios and diminished camshaft profiles for emissions and attempts at economy without severe expensive structural changes.. The European and Japanese Autos were much lighter and weaker in structure but because of weight their economy and performance were better. Also the government reduced many requirements for emissions and other concerns for some imports that domestic manufacturers had to comply with. In addition there were auto union strikes that forced some corners to be cut in order to compete with the lower costing imports. To truly be fair then call them all crappy, styling doesn't make a car crappy, unpopular maybe, Fast cars are not superior as fuel and insurance costs are higher, and sometimes higher maintenance, again so not that popular. So it mostly comes to price, the 70's was in a recession, gas shortages the introduction of, low octane unleaded fuel and a 55 mph speed limit was in place, emissions were a bane to many owners and mechanics. There has never been any vehicle that never needs some kind of maintenance, or a repair on something,. Inflation and falling incomes resulted in many cars uncared for and neglected. Ralph Nader's unsafe at any speed was BS, the Corvair was no better or worse than Porsche or VW. Many autos were slandered so to speak and this hurt the image of US auto manufacturing. FYI the Corvair Corsas came with a factory turbocharger, .ahead of it's time. Overall the seventies was a time that had unusual tastes in fashion, autos, and architecture, interior and exterior, the cars simply reflect the times as they were.

      Obviously not, as Trump is the one who non-stop repeats the same false crap saying the same sentences over, and over, and over ad nauseum by rearranging the words - unless he completely lets the senility take over and flakes out, swaying to music for 40 minutes saying nothing in front of others.

      @@bajaskier No matter how many singular examples you can show that she doesn't pay $50 to people to sit there, as many have confirmed is done for Trump rallies, they are STILL FAR LESS than the constant repetitions from Trump, with the same stories, and same false complaints that he knows riles you and his base up to be disrespectful to a woman you don't even know personally to call her names.
