I love the fact that he is such a no frills no nonsense bass players bass player. And I saw him with The Section opening for James Taylor as well as backing him up. This was in the early 70s and indeed he did have alot more bass chops than most bassist of that time. He still has a wonderful tone and has always been a tasteful player
This man is a true American treasure. So much wisdom, so much wonderful experience ... and the goodness and genius to share it with us. Bless his musical soul!
Great interview. His points on how to record were great to hear. I'm a bass player and I've recorded about 8 albums in the last 2 years and we haven't used a click track on a single song. It's great that that's not something some producers' feel they need to use. Granted, I've worked with studio technician who are 50 years + who are kinda against the modern things :D
Speaking of Beards ... I'm surprised that in all of the interviews I've read or seen about Lee, I have never heard of anyone bringing up the subject of his "Trademark" Rip Van Winkle facial hair. I mean, he has not seen his own face since the early '70's. You can spot Lee Sklar on bass from the 400th row. Calling all future interviewers .... Ask about the beard !
Belman5 , There are dozens of bass players that play what the song wants. Me Sklarr's magic is that he plays what the producer expects better than the producer could imagine.
I would love to attend bass camp where do you find them, what could be more cool than being in a room full of bassist, learning and having a good time. I WANT IN!!! Being connected is what I need l love music and I love the bass.
Anyone know of a way to contact Mr. Sklar if you're not on Facebook? I'd like to see if he can answer a question that has been bugging me for about, oh, forty years now...
Artists I have advised early in their careers because I recognized that they had "IT"..... Z Z Top, Lucinda Williams, The Gourds. Point being my credentials to say, "Young'uns. Old ways is best ways right. So listen. Just shut up & listen. "IT" is authenticity of being within the piece of music. You can't fake it, synthesize it or manufacture it (except for The Monkees). This comes from the "Studio" a place to "study" ie. study the music... ie. study the Musicians. It's called Musicianship. It's usually better if there actual real people involved with actual real people. So listen... listen... listen to Leland. Now go forth and JAM."
I'm surching a Interview with him, where he talks about the Working with Mike Oldfield 2014 ( Man on the Rocks). Is there Someone who knows some about that? Till now i didn't found anything. My English is not so good but i will try ( i am German).
Bigfoot!!! No!! The man, the myth, the legend....in the pocket, no musical idiot here! Ok, forget that he looks like he hangs with Jed Clampit, he could be a mountain man or not one of the "Good ol boy's".Lays it down with style and ease , no showboat, and he doubles as a bouncer when shit hits the fan. Thanks for sharing hope you are well and happy God loves you deeply Shalom 🎸 🔊🏞️🏔️⛰️🎇🎊🎉🎆✨🐕🎈
7:45... this is what I’m repeating since 20 years to those so called musicians who come to show how unique among mankind, they are !!! What the fuck ?!! If you’re that skilled.. makes me happy instead of pissing me off with your nonsense long complicated phrases !! It’s like talking .. put the right word in the right place you got satisfied audience ! Music is about emotions ! If your advanced techniques don’t end into that .. you learned nothing !
Very smart, articulate and humble. And he conveys that with his bass playing.

"No embarrassment in the whole note" So cool. I love this!
He is an amazing person and of course a very talented musician. Thanks a lot for uploading his interview!

Matthew Russell Beautifully said Matthew and I agree ❤️🙂👍🏻

Best bass guitar player in the world!!
"i've used this bass on over 40 albums in the last three years (alone)."

Amazing and inspirational interview, Leland is a legend.
Always respected, admired and loved this man's bass playing and him as a person. Too cool.
Leland is one of my favourite bass players. I really appreciate his comment about cutting songs without a click.
Love listening to Lee, such an amazing dude
Much RESPECT for Mr Leland Sklar
Love the placebo switch.
Gotta love this guy! I hope I can accomplish as much as he did... Making a living out of music... Ah...
Very wise words about "showing off technique". Smooth with words as with strings.
Thank you to Framus/Warwick and Leland. I needed this today as a musician and graphic designer.
Therea no embarrassment in the whole note. Indeed
Thank you.

One of the most brilliant bass players in the word
that's the bass professor himself with great sense of musical wisdom
Has ZZTOP ever asked Lee to fill in for Dusty Hill? Just a wonderin' out loud in Vancouver.

He is my favorite
Thank you Leland

One of the best videos is in Falling in Between with TOTO. I highly recommend to watch the full concert.
Lee learned the set in 5 days...love Mike, but this is one of TOTO's best live performances...Bobby was ON it that night...song selections were great
The 'Producer Switch'.....hahaha...I love that!!
Hahaha, the producer switch...
Leland Sklar is the man!
Leland Sklar is just awesome
He's a true bass wizard
When I grow up I want to be Leland.

Legend
Эх брат, посмотрел бы ты и послушал нашего Калачева! Тембр, экспрессия, качество, гармония, всё в итоге делает его величиной!
Talks a lot of sense . . .Cool guy.
There is nothing more annoying than a choppy bass player! You the man
Lee and Billy Sheehan are my favorites. Jeff Berlin too. We need a B3 tour again.
That's how you get the phone-call for the next job..you deliver the right part for the song, not your ego.
I would love to attend bass camp where do you find them, what could be more cool than being in a room full of bassist, learning and having a good time. I WANT IN!!! Being connected is what I need l love music and I love the bass.
"Blessed" and the musicians who he played with too..
If you listen to my playlist of music two people have played Bass on 99% of the songs, Carol Kaye and Leland Sklar .
Rojer Grison what’s your playlist name? On Spotify?
This guy is like the Santa claus of bass ;)
MacXpert74 The gandalf os bass too
This guy is the real deal👍
If you don't like Sklar you got a problem.
"i call it my producer switch, it gets me through a lot of bullshit." Love that placebo switch when all he does is change his playing position.
I am trying to find a BAND to play with in North Florida.. no-one yet.
Anyone know of a way to contact Mr. Sklar if you're not on Facebook? I'd like to see if he can answer a question that has been bugging me for about, oh, forty years now...
He is every active on Talkbass.

"My producer" switch is kinda geinious.
'. . . mailbox money . . ' LOL!
Talking "Bass" Common sense, from a bass-man who knows what and how to play Bass. no bullshit chops and licks, The bass line,.
I wonder if his beard don't get into the strings
Holy Note
Here because of phil collins wondering whose that white beard man at the back..
And wow this man is legend..
Are these camps ever going to happen again? Festivals and Conventions seem to happen in Germany.
👏👏👏👏😃😃
Leland Sklar is God
Simon de Mars well he looks like god for sure..

Leonardo da Vinci playing bass.
Gandalf
Anybody ask 'What's up with the fur?'
nice gandalf
Deckard Cain
Stay awhile and listen.
Terrible sibilance on this recording, unfortunately.
I wanna see: Leland Sklar VS Paul McCartney BASS OFF!
You Shall Not Bass
Que p**** é essa só fala assoviando
I hate click tracks. I always record without them. If the rest of the musicians want it in their headphones that's fine. Not me.
poomass. it's yule *
btw cool bass dude
Does this guy only talk? I waster 17 minutes of my life...
It's an interview; that's what people do in an interview. You want to hear him play, the search bar is up at the top ...
Ignorant comment.
Playing what the song wants......thats Lee Sklar and that's what great bass playing is all about.
this concept is where Ringo shines.
