Runescape Creator Reveals NEW MMO coming This Year!

- Well this wasn't on my 2024 bingo card. We're getting a new MMORPG in 2024, previously unannounced and coming from the legendary Andrew Gower of Runescape fame.
The new MMO is launching on Q3 of 2024 and promises combat, crafting, professions, mysteries, and magic...and wet gnomes.
Its looking like a very interesting game and the ties to Runescape are obvious. It also looks like it'll have an interesting payment model, calling itself a Free to Play MMO but looking a whole lot like an extended trial + season pass.

Andrew Gower is a legend. I believe he was between the guys that wanted out when Runescape's first pitch for MTX was proposed. His brothers went to work for OSRS at some point as well, both legends too.
This guy ran a legendary MMORPG in his mom's kitchen/basement before they decided to open an HQ, his mom even designed some of the monsters for the 2001 version of the game like camels and bats, these guys have the spirit to build mmorpg's, you just have to look at their board game shelf to know they are awesome, I have full trust in him to make this game right, he is one of the few guys that has shown to know how to do it right.

Tbh I was sold with the "Wet gnome" because honestly the design there is just so cool looking. Like, not joking here, I'm instantly intrigued if they're some sort of mythical creature or if they've been attacked by a dnd type slime creature.
Andrew Gower knew the importance of game integrity when it came to Runescape... I'm really looking forward to his new creation! 😀

This one surprised me as well - and man, it looks so cozy. I'm definitely excited to see what comes out of it, though it's probably not going to be like, "my game." It'd be really neat if this saw some success in spite of not being an action-y, flashy graphical MMO. Looking forward to it!
Yeah really hoping it works out and excited to see what comes of it. I'll definitely be trying it. I'm kind of curious to see how far the "draw distance" is since so much of it seems isolated into small blocks.
This looks pretty cool! As someone who isn't the most wealthy, either, whenever a free to play MMORPG comes out and looks cool, I'm excited.
I started playing EQ in 2002, and I also played Adventure Quest as well off and on. But I did play Runescape in it's earlier form as well off and on.

Never played much of osrs/rs3 but played pg and I am really looking forward to brightershores. I hope they keep in mind potential of getting new players to the genre

I remember Andrew replying to my comment on Twitter about two years ago saying he was working on something similar to runescape. But I never expected this soon or to look this good
What is the game of the future mmo?
My eyes lit up when you mentioned Adventurequest, but I want to mention, that it wasn't an MMO, like RS was. There was no way to even see your friend's characters in game until Dragonfable. Their first MMO was Adventurequest Worlds in 2008.

Well from Zork to Eve I am a mmorpg junky so much so I makem. I can't get into runescape and I have tried but maybe this will hook me.
I know that "looks like a mobile game" is a bit of a meme, but this really looks like a mobile game.
The graphics in mobile games is not the issue. It's the appalling ethics that come with it with the gacha mechanics and mtx. But the gowers were never pro mtx so i doubt it'll be treated like mobile games are nowadays
This is a solid "maybe". We'll have to see how that monetization works a little closer.

Though, not a fan of forced classes. Kind of anti the heart of the player base that would jump to his game.
Side note to the the author, Jagex is working on an unreal engine 5 survival based game you can read their job posting to get a slight idea on what they are working on its supposed to be in universe with Runescape as well the fact Andrew clearly did his press release in advance of theirs doesn't feel coincidental at all... 😂 graphically it looks superior to osrs, but not much so rs3 but he's added boats so that'll give him a big win with hard-core scaper's who've been asking for that for years. It feels a bit barebones based on the post for 10 years of work unless they created a proprietary engine for it which while noble in concept feels silly with how amazing some of the top tier engines are. Regardless I'll check it out
Real legends played both adventure quest and RuneScape. As well as mech quest
I'm a 1/3rd legend then but i'll take it (trying to fix the Runescape part, too)

you can litteraly hack those games with cheatengine.

It could be player to player only, maybe through auction house if it is Runescape style, you can put it for sale, just not a specific person.
Most MMOs you can’t even PLAY without a subscription lol. Not a big deal imo.

I plan to try OSRS but more hesitant with RS3 after their recent dabbling in more p2w microtransactions (That I believe they backed off on?)
But...my dear EQ2 is also doing the same p2w dabbling so perhaps I'm just being too harsh.

Rather just get an UO type game. Legends of Aria was the last hope, but atlas was bitten by the curse of greed.
Legends of Aria is such a huge disappointment. I backed it and played it and saw the potential, it just needed a ton more content that they never added. I'm going to test Fractured Online later this year, though.

Andrew didn't work on rs3, it might look like rs3 but doesn't mean mechanics going to be as rs3
Runescape meets Minecraft. This is going to be the BEST game ever. A true WoW Killer! (until you play it and find it's just another pile of steaming dog do-do).

With unreal engine 5 all they have to do is copy osrs and make it into a free movement game like new world …. That game will be active, this game their making looks like a waste of their time…
No new world is dieing, atleast osrs has so much content and repeat content is somewhat enjoyable, I’m just comparing movement and physics is all
