- Swimming pools can present hazards for workers. Chemicals are added to the water to protect our health. However, these chemicals may evaporate, drift through the air, and affect the health of workers who have become sensitized.
Would be great if pools had a poster about this. Everyone knows the rules but no one knoes why, so many people dismiss them and dont shower etc.
At the pool I work at, we have signs and we personally explain why to shower to people, and behold the next time they come to swim they hop in the pool without showering. Pretty much nobody cares even if they know why.
It seems like most people only shower AFTER they’re done using the pool to get the pool smell off themselves. They don’t give a shit what they’re putting in the pool by not showering before.
this isnt a rule in my country
Chloramine attack was one of the reasons behind the short lifespan of the earlier stretchy swimming costumes; the early synthetic fibres were pretty susceptible to damage however Nylon was far more resistant (hence the early popularity of Nylon-based swimwear!). Nowadays Polyester offers the best durability, usually in combination with elastane (Lycra).
I never even knew this existed. Thank you +WorksafeBC, for sharing this.
Realistically if the lifeguard had a moment where they smelt clorine to the point they needed first aid, the pool would have been shut down.
Dang, even going to the pool is a recipe for disaster on this channel... But thanks for the info.
Fascinating I never knew all of this …I’ve learned a large amount in such small time. I’m going to tell this to many people and I think gyms with pools in schools or community pools should have all this info posted so people can learn this info. Thanks!
You shouldn't really smell chlorine/chloramine overwhelmingly. That's a nasty pool. You should barely smell it AT ALL.
I knew it! People pee in the pool and don't admit it.
never go in a kid pool
So we swim in other peoples sweat and pee.
Mostly pee.
In public pools yes
If you smell overwhelming chlorine, that's a dirty pool, sorry.
Does this include outdoor pools
Never piss in the pool!!!
Found a link between consuming chloramine in drinking water and obesity/diabetes/overweight/general low energy in people. Countries which use chloramine to their tap water dezinfection have a lot bigger percentage of overweight and obesity in people. Also chloramine in tap water slowly kills garden plants if watered by making them slowly ill.
Let the water sit out or bubble it with a new fish tank bubbler. 24+ hours at room temp and the chlorine/chloramine will go away. This is why you can use it for your fish and not kill them then.
Oh man I want to get rescued by that hot blonde lifeguard
bro has no dignity💀
If I watch this channel long enough, I may never leave the house. Tho most accidents happen at home or within a short distance.
More the reason why I refuse to go swimming (unless the pool is out of doors)
my household water reeks of chlorine. the city switched from chlorine to chloramine least year. now I have a bad rash on my face. good to know what it is from
But will showering really be effective? i mean its a swimming pool, people sweat way more when they exercise.
And pissing in the pool. Just say it 😂

Many municipal water suppliers are now using chloramines to sanitize the water we are drinking chloramines.
It is not the same chloramine. Monochloramine is what is used to treat drinking water and it is not harmful to the air quality people breathe like the chloramine from swimming pools, which are specifically Dichloramine and Trichoramine.

Obvious science? Let the water sit at room temp, or aerate it with a fish tank bubbler for 24+ hours. It dissipates. Which is why you can put fish in it after a few days.
Chloramines in summer, chlorine in winter.
