- I wanted to do this for a long time since I discovered the cover, and here it is! I hope everything is okay, is my first time doing this kind of video, and I don´t have a lot of experience.

manga is set three years before the game, so diluc definitely looks a lot younger here
also note that diluc wasn't always this moody, but his father's death changed his outlook

You do realize it’s not a mistranslation unless the company says so right? In real life, the brother pact does not lead to romance and usually is a way of looking at a close friend in a brotherly way. So yes, they used sworn brother in Chinese but perhaps they changed it to brothers in English because that’s was an easier way for them to convey their relationship? That they feel like brothers to eachother. It’s a really gross trope anyways (coming from someone who is Chinese) bc the sworn brothers thing is USUALLY seen as fanily between the two members

In the original, Chinese, version of the game and webtoon, they are said to be 义兄.
"义兄" is a Chinese term that doesn't have a completely correct translation, and that can be interpreted in many ways. Some of the most used ways are "sworn brothers", "righteous brothers" and "blood brothers".

"Sworn/Righteous/Blood brothers" doesn't mean they are biological or adopted brothers, but more like close friends. They are basically 'best friends forever'. They are friends who swear loyalty to each other, care for each other, trust each other... They are VERY important friends to each other, important almost like a family.
And as I said, there are several ways to interpret "义兄". The way the English translation decided to interpret it was as 'adopted brothers'. They possibly adapted it that way because "sworn/righteous/blood brothers" is not that common in the West/it's not something that is well known, and they would like to use something that would be quicker to understand and that doesn't take 100% of the meaning of the original words.

okay, some antis are seriously pissing me off by affirming that they are brothers/adoptive brothers so, here:
They are sworn brothers, meaning they just swore loyalty and to stay by each other's side. They are not adoptive brothers as it is a mistranslation which has been complaint about and apologized for by the mihoyo chinese and western team. The word brothers in sworn brothers has no relation to brotherhood (even though they are not brothers/adoptive brothers you can still see them as such). That they say brother from time to time has nothing to do as it's a honorific. Also, that brotherly view was from outside "they were so synced that they seemed like twins (brothers by blood)", never mentioned by Kaeya nor Diluc considering each other as actual brothers. Sworn brothers isn't seeing each other as siblings, it's more like a best friend kinda bond.
Regarding being raised together: in other series, some pairs were raised together but still didn't view each other as siblings; Catra and Adora, Eren and Mikasa, Mikaela and Yuichiro were raised the same way but still developed another kind of love and view of their relationship. The first two are canon and honestly, KaeLuc is the equal to MikaYuu but with hate-
Kaeya was thrown out into Diluc's family but never got adopted and, yes, they were very much aware of their situation as Kaeya addressed Crepus not as his dad but Diluc's, multiple times.
I did not read the whole english translation yet but from what I have, Kaeya not even once says that they are brothers nor that Crepus was his dad but Diluc's. He saw him more as a master.
In one internal dialogue in the english translation, Kaeya does say that they were like brothers at the time (4 years after the incident) but it is also mentioned later on (chinese) that they had a deeper bond in their teens.
Catra and Adora got raised together just like many other children in real life, by the same person but, they did not see each other as siblings. They can be described as childhood friends but it'd be incorrect to call them siblings if they were not adopted nor considered each other siblings. The same goes to Kaeya and Diluc.
In the manga, it never mentions adoption nor does the game as part of the staff and who made the webtoon are kaeluc shippers themselves (at least in chinese). The english translation of the game is errant and they have already apologized for it but the webtoon also states them as such. They never say adoptive brothers in the webtoon, Crepus is referred to as "his dad" when Kaeya speaks about him, referring to Diluc's. Crepus calls kaya his sworn son. Again, I have not read all of the english translation but if they did mistranslate it, then it's just that, a mistranslation.
The chinese is the official one, it is not my fault if you think they are canonly adoptive brothers because of a mistranslation. Again, they have stated many times that it was a mistranslation in their official twitters and they themselves retweet and like kaeluc art- I don't think they'd do that if they were actual brothers as it'd be illegal, more than it already is according to chinese anti-lgbt laws.
More proof of them not being brothers and general info:
In general 把兄弟 ‘sworn brothers’ describes those who are closer than regular friends, like they’re family, would live and die for each other. It is not tied to being actual brothers.
Because of censorship laws in China, the term is also commonly used to describe characters in a gay relationship (and so avoiding having to say they’re gay). Since "living and dying for each other" does cover parts of the sentiment of a romantic relationship.
This is a sad reality, where we are back to "code words" to figure out what’s really going on, but from my experience with Chinese media: if something is described as "sworn brothers", do a double take. The author is possibly trying to tell you there’s something more to these two "friends".
Obviously that’s not the case for all situations, but at least people need to start understanding "sworn brothers" ≠ "actual family by blood" and could mean "gay relationship".
Kaeya doesn’t really call Diluc “brother” (哥) but 義兄弟 - sworn brother. I went through kaya’s profile again and it says in chinese that he is diluc’s sworn brother.
In old terms that’s 義兄弟 (brother) or 義子 (child) in modern terms it would be 乾哥 and in modern society, it’s acceptable for sworn brothers and sworn sisters to get together so- for adoptive, the chinese wording would be 寄養兒子 or 寄養子, they mean different things.
Ok but this just proves that Kaeya wasn’t even adopted into the family, he was just a the son of a very close friend of their parents that came to live with them. that’s it. the mistranslations are so weird. This would also explain the fact that Kaeya didn't call Diluc’s father “dad” or “old man” because if you are a 乾兒子 of the family you’d call them 乾媽(sworn mom) and 乾爹(sworn dad) The original word for “sworn brothers” is 結拜兄弟 結拜 for the word “becoming” or “swearing to (an oath)” 兄弟 for brothers. Hence, why instead of calling the people a couple, they are sworn brothers instead. Them being sworn brothers means that there is a sense of familiarity in the bond, so much so that you’d be willing to *die for* each other. it’s nowhere near being a “step brother” or “brother in law” because being sworn brothers *is more delicate than that*. It’s simply an overly simplification of calling your admiration, love and affection for someone that you are willing to live with and die with.
*In case you were wondering why it's called brothers* :
it’s because in old chinese there aren’t any flowery words to describe this type of bond. In chinese literature, our words are not as flowery or as “fancy” as western literature. anything can be taken at face value or more that and the words “哥哥“ and ”姐姐“ are also often used for flirting in society nowadays. most of our words and nouns are very simplified, because at the end of the day there are only around 4100 chinese characters that are commonly used in our daily life; In contrast, there are a lot of flowery and fancy words in western literature and most of the time not everything can be taken at face value. because of this, there may have been misunderstandings to direct translations of chinese words.
The word “big brother" and "big sister” are used very loosely and casually nowadays and, is always differentiated by the tone.
In families, using 哥哥, 姐姐, 弟弟, 妹妹 are all words for addressing family members but, outside in society, with the different scenarios can have different implications. It can be used teasingly between lovers or it can also be used to taunt someone that you know.
In most chinese romance novels or comics, we can sometimes see these words being used to address the protagonist or the lover in the story. These words mostly symbolise a sense of admiration and/or a sense of romantic/platonic love.
Now, with that being said, back to sworn brothers. The word "brothers” can also be seen in this context. The word brothers is simply there because we need a word to call this type of bonding, it does *not* mean that they are brothers. It's phrased that way as the word is used very loosely now, as well as the different implications of the words “哥哥“ and ”兄弟” don't really mean brother, rather its definition should be whatever word there is for “bro” right now. it can be used in the same context as “bros before h03s” and it should be perceived this way.

They aren’t brothers in the Chinese but sworn brothers. The translators even admitted their mistake with the English translation, but they didn’t correct it for some reason.. there’s a lot a Threads from Chinese players explaining this, and if you look at kaeyas story and in the webtoon yourself you find him using the Chinese characters for sworn brother when it’s about diluc.
