Outstanding interview. I am a Liverpool fan and always felt with Owen in our team we could beat any team. Watching him emerge and play for Liverpool and England was incredible. I was gutted when he left and then gutted we didn't resign him, I would've paid the £16million Newcastle paid for no question. Him and Torres would've been a superb strike force.

I quite like Michael Owen and I think he has been maligned in some ways. However, he fails to see some important things about his choices. He didn't need to leave Liverpool for Real Madrid. Rafa had just come in and he could have committed himself to the new manager rather than deciding he had to join the galacticos in Spain. After that Liverpool came back in for him but didn't offer as much as Newcastle. RM told him he could go to Newcastle or stay. He could have said 'I'll stay' and very likely RM would have backed off and sold him to Liverpool. Or they would have sold him sux months later.. Instead he says he had to be playing first team football so he could be in the World Cup. One of the criticisms of him in Liverpool is that he always wanted to play for England more than Liverpool. In the end what did he achieve with England? Not much. Of course, it's fine to play for England, but Owen seemed to micro manage his career with playing for England as his primary interest. Liverpool was his second concern. After that, the decision to go to Manchester United was dictated by previous bad choices. But he must understand that Liverpool players who go to MU are vilified. It is proof that in some ways he still doesn't get it.

Wow I finally understand all that "excuses" about England failures at the WC/Euros. You really care more about some tribe, property of multi milionares. Thats just disgusting. Recently read Carragher biography and I was shocked. He dont care about his country, all he care about is private company. You are all one nation but you stucked in X century, artificial tribal wars and act like zealots.

I have a big problem with all the hate on Michael Owen. Been a fan since his Liverpool days and I will say, him and Paul Scholes are the only two world class players England had in the past 30 years. For fans and people to not see that, is part of the issue why UK football on a national team level is complete trash since the mid 90s. The majority of players are, and have been, severely overrated namely guys like Beckham, Gerrard (and I'm a fan of this guy), Terry, Ferdinand, Rooney, Lampert and others. None of them ever stepped up in important games or competitions, they just disappeared. Owen and Scholes were the only two players (Owen if not injured) who would give you what "they" promised.

Felt a bit for Michael Owen here, look at the red in his face, he’s at pains to explain his position, agree with some of what he has said at least, not his fault he was injured, understood his point about it all being for Newcastle putting his foot in when it broke (barring going to the World Cup which can’t have been for anyone but himself and his country, not Newcastle, but I can’t blame him for that to be fair I’d be the same if good enough), feel some sympathy for him, think he’s telling a lot of truths here. Also, some Geordies gave him and give him loads of stick, the moment he gives a touch back, fairer stuff in many ways, he’s panned... I see your point Michael.
I say to fans, if you can’t take it don’t give it, as a Liverpool fan, always felt sorry for Garry Neville, getting dog’s abuse from LFC fans, real bad stuff, yet, when they score a late winner he kisses his badge to the fans, and they whinge like kids... and I am a Liverpool fan which I guess some won’t believe sadly... I say again, if you can’t take it, don’t give it... feel sorry for Shearer too, he was unlucky generally.

This is actually a deep interview because it was the emergence of Owen that signaled the end of Stan's Liverpool career..Can't help think about that Wimbledon away game where we were 2-0 down..Stan gets taken off..Owen comes on and scores as a 17 yr old..The next season he truly explodes onto the world scene

Understand your point although Owen never ended Stans lfc career it was already known Stan was going to Villa , also Owen was talked about for couple of years was just matter of time before he ended up in the first team

I remember going to Liverpool v Sheff Wed reserve game in 97 or 98 at Anfield. Stan Collymore had been dropped to the reserves for some reason, disciplinary i think, Liverpool won 4-2, Collymore got two, and petulantly shouted towards the bench after one of his goals, but everyone left the ground not talking about him, but the tiny kid who scored the other two, one Michael Owen. He was a cut above any other player on the pitch that day.

Owen. A teenage phenomena who sadly fell out of love with football as early as his latter years at liverpool, Injuries/mortality being a major contributory. BTW, I believe his spate of recent broadcast introspection is a PR exercise, I doubt if we'll ever know what he really thinks/feels. Dispassion.

Quality stuff. What a player he was. If Shearer had any sort of issue with Owen he should've spoken with him in private.
