Name the Swiss Cantonal flags!

  • In Lugano, I was able to name most the cantons of Switzerland - though the Basel half-canton flags can be incorrectly switched for the other because of their similar shape and opposite position. The Unterwalden and half-canton flags of Obwalden and Nidwalden are distinguishable. Nidwalden has a solid red background, but the Obwalden flag has a red-and-white background, both with a single key on each flag, having different designs. The Appenzell half-canton flags can be distinguished with a V on the left side of the black bear, and an R on the right side of the bear, which is used by Appenzell Ausser Rhoden. The same flag without the letters is used by Appenzell Inner Rhoden.
In many Swiss cities and towns, wherever there is a possibility to hang flags, they put flags of all the cantons, even the half-cantons.
These flags were seen along Via San Lorenzo, around the corner of the Lugano Città TPL funicular station of Lugano, the opposite end of the FFS main-line railway station.

Danke vielmals! I used to mix up those two horns. Since spending a night in Basel and visiting Aesch (BL) earlier this year, I now realise that black is for Basel-Stadt and red is for Basel-Land.

The cantonal flag that I could not name correctly at the time of filming was Appenzell Ausser Rhoden (Capital: Herisau). It was rolled up so I could not tell if the V and R were visible. The other Appenzell flag was correct. Without the V and R, the flag would be for Appenzell Inner Rhoden.
I also had the Basel flags backwards. The black flag is for the city half of the canton, the red one for the country half of the canton. That's 24 of 26 correct.
