Fun fact: This is the only licensed game developed my Shigeru Miyamoto. Fun fact 2: Miyamoto wanted to develop a Popeye game as his first project for Nintendo, but they had difficulty getting the rights from King Features Syndicate. The result is Miyamoto created Donkey Kong.
It's a good thing that the original Popeye video game ended up becoming "Donkey Kong" instead; Otherwise, we probably wouldn't have one of the greatest video game heroes of all time if that happened.
@@keatonthekoopatroopa246 Yes, Nintendo of America's landlord was named Mario. The character's look and original occupation of a carpenter was apparently inspired by a neighbor of Miyamoto's at the time.
The O2 port is one of the most abstract ports of any game I've seen. Like, the gameplay looks fine but the graphics don't make much sense if you've never played the game on another system
The Odyssey 2's the best port. The devs even beat the arcade with STUPENDOUS effort on production alone. Job well done. Job well done. *Golfclap* Love how Brutus' face could be done seamlessly with just the use of the number 5 in some ports. Genius.
I don't know if this glitch happens in any of the other versions, but in the C64 version, when you hit Bluto (Brutus) while in spinach mode, and he goes flying across the screen, if you hit the punching bag which releases the bucket, and time it perfectly so that it lands on his head, it'll freeze him in place but in that animation. Bluto is no longer a threat for the remainder of that level (or life, Popeye can still fail by not catching all the hearts in time, or get hit by a bottle)
Missing background music aside, this is once again an excellent arcade conversion from Parker Brothers for the TI-99/4A and holds it's own handily among the other same-generation machines. Milton Bradley may be much more closely associated with the 4A, but with Popeye, Frogger, QBert (easily the best home-computer conversion at the time) and the recently released Tutankham, it was Parker Brothers who created the most compelling arcade-based titles for the TI-99. Considering the hardware though, the Odyssey2 port must have been a real labour of love. and the programmer actually pulled it off (even including the spinach theme!)! Yhay ois no small feat on such limited hardware. Huge Kudos!
Apple 2 devs: Wait how are we going to program Olive into the game? We filled up the whole game with 6 colors! What are we going to do? Another Apple 2 dev: Just forget her. It's not like she was that big of a part of the game...
Also, I loved the hell out of the mobile phone port that Namco did when I had my LG cellphone on Verizon years ago. Sure, the extra features cost me from data usage, but it was really nice being able to earn tokens just to be able to read some of the original color and B&W comics. That, and the extra and bonus stages really helped further enhance the Arrange Mode.
I used to have the NES version. But thanks for putting up the Odyssey 2 version. I will now have nightmares! Apparently, a small albino is being hunted by the pink Predator from above throwing shit at him, while a giant green alien from below is trying to kill him. HIs only hope is to eat one of the aliens detached balls. And when he does, the alien flies around the screen and gives out a horrible shrieking sound. I mean how would you like it if someone ate one of your balls? Yep. Nightmares.
The best port of Popeye is probably an unofficial conversion called Sailor Man for the TRS80 color computer. It’s really worth including because it outshines all these other versions and really showcases what the Coco is capable of.

wingnut4427 Cool collection you had/still have. I currently have the Wii, PS 2, PS 3, Gamecube, NES, and Atari 2600. The NES and 2600 still work perfectly. Also are there any games that you are really great at? I do have a couple of scores listed with Twin Galaxies - 2.4 Million on Dig-Dug, 140,500 on D2K - Jumpman Returns, 353,550 on Crazy Climber. My Brother Eric is the World Record Holder on Toobin, Paperboy (Easy Street), and Robotron 2084.

Great video! Surprisingly, the C64 version looks the closest to the arcade at a glance. Odyssey 2 version would have been a huge disappointment back in the day. I actually had both of those systems in the 1980s and never realized they had Popeye.
By the standard of doing what you could with the hardware you had, the 2600 version really is one of the best ports. Many of the other ports on much more capable systems had no excuse to be so different from the arcade.
To celebrate My birthday today. I'm going to go ahead & release some of the remakes that I have been working on. I hope You guys enjoy the new updated videos. But I'm still FAR from finished with the others. SO hang on tight ! ;) I will be uploading a new video this weekend as well. Let's Compare ( Jungle Hunt ). :D Stay tuned !
The Colecovision and NES versions were probably the best. The Amiga and Spectrum versions were interesting as i never saw these before. As for the Odyssey 2 version ,to quote an infamous AVGN phrase "what were they thinking?!" Thanks for uploading.
The Arcade Popeye Probably Has The Best Sounds & Graphics Of Any Arcade Game Ever Made! WOW! :D That Is Simply The Best Looking Arcade Game I Have Ever Seen!
Besides the arcade version in my opinion the best one is that of NES followed by the Colecovision. I spent so much money in playing Popeye in game centers during my holidays in the 1980s...When Colecovision was launched in my country (Italy) I immediately purchased the console. Guess which was the first cartdrige...Popeye of course!
I share Your sentiment but I believe it could have been even better. In fact I believe the NES could have handled at least a 98% accurate port. Larger sprites & an opening sequence would have sent this version over the top. Have You seen the Opcode remakes of Donkey Kong & Pac-man for the colecovision ? Absolutely astounding ! I'm sure the NES could have handled much much more. Thanks for commenting.
There are some remakes on Popeye cartoons. They are: Let's Get Movin' in 1936 and A Hole In One in 1957, Customers Wanted in 1939 and Penny Antics in 1955, Two Alarm Fire in 1934 and Fireman's Brawl in 1953, Protek The Weakingisk in 1937 and Barking Dogs Don't Bite in 1949, Flies Ain't Human in 1941 and Fly's Last Flight in 1948, Me Musical Nephews in 1942 and Riot in Rhythm in 1950, and Dizzy Divers in 1934 and Peep In The Deep in 1946.
indeed. There were some versions that I had that would only operate in Pal mode. I'm considering updating those vids as well. but it will be in due time. :) thanks for the comment.
Loved the arcade Popeye, liked it more than Donkey Kong and Mario Bros. even. Coleco and NES had the best ports though I hate what they did to the Popeye sprite in the NES version.
correct. I actually had to add sound effects to help make the footage a little more bearable. lol You would be amazed at how much editing some of these require.
I was highly impressed with the Texas Instruments version and surprised how well the 2600 version came out. Very few versions had the full movement of Brutus, like him being able to jump down a level. That always scared the hell out of me as a kid!
I clicked on this because I thought it was a comparison of Popeye cartoons over the years...lol. My brother has a Popeye cocktail table arcade game. Popeye is one of my favorite games.
The Amiga port is from Bignonia, a couple of sceners dedicated to port some C64 classics to the Amiga. Algo converted Donkey Kong and Frantic Freddie, which are both great.
One of the best games that I played in arcades and Greek-owned UK restaurants, back around 1983! (Star Wars and Mr Do also) That Odyssey version is set in a dystopian Popeye future world?
I played the Colecovision one back in the day. It had a funny glitch on the second level. Just chase Bluto to the see saw after getting the spinach and he'll spin across the screen indefinitely until the end of the level.
I know, not that many. The arcade version also had some pretty good sprite work as well with the way they did those designs. I sorta liked it when you leave a heart sinking in the water and Olive Oyl comes down and scolds you for it.
Wow i cant believe the differences in these Versions ! cool Video, one of the all time classic arcades in my opinion although i could never get far in it as a kid usually lost at 2nd stage a lot,
18:29 I have a game of it but different model(s40v3a) it has no sound issues but no music but only sound effects during gameplay it also has music on menu and act 1 intro... But nautically low volume
No system did the arcade true justice. However, the NES and the Colecovision versions would probably be the ones I'd pick. Oh, and the Odyssey 2 is unbearably horrible - how was this even released??
if it was up to me when playing Popeye, I would save the Spinach until the last item pickup so that it would work more like in the cartoons (acting as a deus ex machina for Popeye in the last stretch)
That odyssey port cant be officially licensed. There's no way a port of a game based on a popular cartoon like Popeye would reduce the characters to unrecognizable stick figures like that, and I dont think they were even still making Odyssey games by 1982
whats that old epic military game called again.... u are shooting first person at enemies with a machinegun , when it came out it was the best game , everyone played it ... anyone recall?
That Amiga version is kind of weird. Sure it had better graphics than the arcade original.. (I realize this is kind of a rhetorical question) Why is Olive Oyl so depressed? All other versions she was happily giving her kisses away, here she's moping around.
Strange fact: The villain in the arcade game is identified as Brutus, the version of Bluto who exists because of poor legal research. (Why is Bluto sometimes Brutus? Well, King Features, the comics syndicate with the rights to Popeye, believed *incorrectly* that they didn't own Bluto. He was a villain from E. C. Segar's comic strip, but a rather minor and obscure one, elevated to major status only by Fleischer Studios' cartoon shorts, which made him Popeye's recurring archnemesis in endless damsel-in-distress plots. King Features, who I guess had a lazy legal department, mistakenly thought the Fleischers had invented Bluto entirely, and came up with "Brutus" as a substitute character, who appeared under that name in the cartoons made for TV in the Sixties and after. And in this game.)
If I had to guess what the Odyssey 2 version was without knowing, I would think it was about Egyptian mythology, it looks like the Nile and some pyramids at the bottom, some sort of goddess at the top, and the green thing looks like a monstrous giant.
There are other version of Popeye on the Spectrum that poop all over most of these versions ... I am wondering why only a prototype speccy version was shown
In the commercial they also anounced a version for Commodore vic-20! Has it been released? Really liked the game on C64! And the arcade version looked great, you could really recognize his pipe, even in the game. How many video games are there with pipe smoking characters, Sherlock Holmes excluded? :-)
Happy birthday man. I'm just curious if for some of the C64 ports if you tried seeing how they ran when setting the emulator to NTSC mode? Having a copy of Ms. Pac-Man on cartridge, and Dig-Dug, Jumpman Junior, and Pac-Man on floppy disk I can say they run considerably faster on my NTSC Commodore 128 and 64.

I played the Colecovision one back in the day. It had a funny glitch on the second level. Just chase Bluto to the see saw after getting the spinach and he'll spin across the screen indefinitely until the end of the level.
Thanks man. :) I'll get Your video for RUclips spotlight up soon. Been busy with the holiday. :)
I know, not that many. The arcade version also had some pretty good sprite work as well with the way they did those designs. I sorta liked it when you leave a heart sinking in the water and Olive Oyl comes down and scolds you for it.
Wow i cant believe the differences in these Versions ! cool Video, one of the all time classic arcades in my opinion although i could never get far in it as a kid usually lost at 2nd stage a lot,
There is also another Game & Watch Popeye in two formats: Panorama Screen and Tabletop.
Oh my god, thank you! I love your series... =)
18:29 I have a game of it but different model(s40v3a) it has no sound issues but no music but only sound effects during gameplay it also has music on menu and act 1 intro...
But nautically low volume
Happy birthday, Wingnut! :D
The arcade version seems to use some sound fx from mario bros
No system did the arcade true justice. However, the NES and the Colecovision versions would probably be the ones I'd pick. Oh, and the Odyssey 2 is unbearably horrible - how was this even released??
I had the coleco vision version played the hell out of it best version at the time it came out besides arcade
if it was up to me when playing Popeye, I would save the Spinach until the last item pickup so that it would work more like in the cartoons (acting as a deus ex machina for Popeye in the last stretch)
Wow. No shock they went with Don Priestly's Speccy version of Popeye after seeing that prototype.
You missed!! the Game and Watch PANORAMA versión. It's the most beautiful of them all and the most fun among all the versions.
Operation Wolf or Operation Thunderbolt
Gaming History Source thx.
Only version I ever played was Arcade and even today the game seems hard as heck but guess I don't practice often enough.
Wow, the Colecovision gives the NES a run for it's money.
1. Arcade
2. NES
3. Colecovision
I would say the Commodore 64 was a better port with NES right after.
This is an arcade classic!
enjoyed the video and happy birthday.
That Amiga version is kind of weird. Sure it had better graphics than the arcade original.. (I realize this is kind of a rhetorical question) Why is Olive Oyl so depressed? All other versions she was happily giving her kisses away, here she's moping around.
To be fair, the Odyssey 2 version was an unfinished Parker Brothers prototype and never released.
zx spectrum version runs@6mhz with snapper discs from velesoft site
Does the 5 on Bluto's face stand for 5200 in the Atari 5200 version? 😂
The Odyssey 2 Port is like when you ask your mom for a pair of Nikes but you got Keds instead
Is it me or does the song in the background sound like that one song called "stand by me"
Olive Oyl looks ridiculous on the C-64! LOL
I am wondering why only a prototype speccy version was shown
Where is the in-game music from originally? I recognise it
In the commercial they also anounced a version for Commodore vic-20! Has it been released?
Really liked the game on C64! And the arcade version looked great, you could really recognize his pipe, even in the game. How many video games are there with pipe smoking characters, Sherlock Holmes excluded? :-)
Best version: Nes, absolutely, then C64. The Java edition is horrible, absolutely.
I use to play the ColecoVision version a lot as a kid.
The ColecoVision And TI99 Versions Sound The Same
In Arcade version, whos the old guy? Besides the 3 main characters
Wimpy.
+PasJanMakMarSky Vids thank you sir
The Amiga Version is pretty neat, with the extra animations and the originality with the sprites.
That's what I thought as well. But it is mentioned in the history of the game. It might have been programed by another publisher.
In the Intellivision version the heart sound is from Donkey Kong
The music in thies game is strangely catchy. It's stuck in my head!
