  • There are plenty of videos that explain the Dewey Decimal System for younger children. This simple video was made with middle schoolers in mind. It was recorded in a middle school library and with middle school resources.
The first segment introduces the creator of the system, Mr. Melvil Dewey, it explains what call numbers are, and describes the OPAC.
The second segmeent introduces the Dewey Decimal System. It’s not super detailed, but it will help students understand why they should at least learn the 10 Dewey “hundreds sections.”
The third segment is a fun challenge! The video must be paused to give time for students to try and classify the book into a Dewey section. Answers are given at the end of the video.
This instructional video connects to the American Association of School Librarian’s Inquire shared foundation because it allows “learners to make personal connections by engaging in an iterative inquiry process and reflecting on their learning” (American Association of School Librarians, 2017)
