Absolutely brilliant. I am embarrassed to say that I have lived in NZ for 20 years and only now learning Te Reo. Thoroughly enjoying it and actually saying local place names correctly. This video is great and very useful. Thank you.
It’s ok not many have learned their own language Te reo Māori was taken from the Māori for years even I don’t know also and I do wish to hold Te Reo Māori so it cannot die
Thank you so much for doing this, I'm an Aussie born Maori too, no whanau to teach me but I've been trying to teach myself ever since my firstborn came along 16 years ago. With no Maori speaking ppl around me I've really struggled with pronouncing what I've learnt, this gives me a much better understanding and I hope to pass it down to my kids ❤
That’s great! I’ve just come back from my first visit to a local Marae very exited to learn the Maori Language and then I’ve found your channel...Thank you very very very much for sharing your knowledge and you passion for Te Reo Māori. I moved from Brazil to NZ only a year ago. It is amazing how the Maori language phonics are similar with the native Brazilians ones. It’s quite easy for me to pronounce them because of the familiarity. That’s making me feel encouraged...I will get there, for sure! Thanks again! Please, keep posting. Cheers! 🤗
Tena koe Grant wow i only just discovered you today. Im maori samoan and have struggled for years to learn. Im excited and timing is everything, you have given me hope to learn bless you. Nga mihi Mesepa
Kia ora Grant, I'm really enjoying your lessons, today's wero 3 hard to pronounce words for me, 1) Whangaparaoa, Hibiscus coast north of Tamaki Makaurau 2)Te Rereatukahia, marae in Katikati 3) Maungārongo, words from Waiata "He Honore" I find ng sounds the most challenging. ngā mihi
This was such an awesome breakdown, I know basic Maori words but haven’t put an actual sentence together till now! Even my 9 year old daughter is understanding what I’m saying! Thanks!! 👏🏻🎉
Hi there - I have just arrived in NZ from South Africa - and would very much like to speak the Maori language - just to help myself along. Thank you for your classes on line - it is most helpful and I will definitely continue with you. thank you again Y
Thanks for these videos. While COVID-19 is happening I am using them to help me learn te reo Māori from home and I am posting my journey onto our kura facebook page. Great inspiration for our tauira. Tēnā rawa atu koe.
Kia ora e te Grant! Thank you for your videos!! I’ve just started learning Te Reo Māori with Te Wānanga o Aotearoa here in Rāhui Pōkeka. We’ve been learning how to pronounce place names and a few I got hung up on were Te Papaioea and Whangārei. Whangārei because I never knew that the ngā had an elongated vowel. Whenever I’ve heard people say Whangārei I assumed it was a long Whā but its not lol. So it’s been hard in the sense that I’ve had to relearn how to say it properly. Te Papaioea has gotten easier the more I’ve said it and is actually one of my favourite words to say now ☺️.. Anyway, I look forward to getting through all your videos! Thanks again
Kia Ora Grant. Nga mihi, we are learning a lot of Moteatea at the moment and this video definitley supports the importance of really moving your face to get the syllables, vowels all at once! Good to know it is a thing. I find it really helps me out to get all the words in my mouth and be in sync haha. Mauri ora!
Hi, Maori vowels sound like Indonesian vowels. Interesting :-) If I ever make it to New Zealand, I look forward to learning Maori. Meanwhile, I will learn it from your RUclips Maori lessons.
Exciting and at a pace I can work with. Mauri Ora, Grant. Look forward to this journey with everyone learning at their own pace and sharing there whakaaro. Ngaa Mihi.
Kia ora Grant, every time I come in to see what you have brought in to help us with Te Reo, I copy every lesson you type into Utube and what I have now is a file that really helps me at my night class at Nmit. Like I said before, If I have problems grasping a particular part in Te Reo with you, I can pause and replay you to I get it. But not so at Nmit, Once the kaioko has finished explaining what she is writing and then wipes it off, I can't get a replay..Here are a couple of words that I had trouble getting my tongue around. "Ohaoha " bit easier now but when I first used it, was frequently getting it completely wrong like; ahoaho instead. It was used in this introduction of who I am in a pepe before giving my whakapapa.
I love your videos. I'm very late to them and am glad they are here to help. More and more often I find that my experience learning Japanese helps with most vowel pronunciations in many foreign-to-me languages. I look forward to learning more from you. Those websites in this video are very helpful ^_^
Ahiahi mārie, Followed the 'tense' video and the pronunciation one - both fantastic! Great help with the course I'm doing which is written. I'll practise and once I think I've nailed it I'll send a video and see if you agree! mā te wā
Great vid. Really helpful. To patai: what vowel sounds do I struggle with? Embarrassingly, it’s the simple ‘ou’ sound. Eg koutou. I think it’s hard-wired wrong!
Kia ora Iv been interested in learning te reo are you able to point me in right place for how I address a tangi that will be my mums .I would love to right an speak what I write for my mum in maori

It is good, but just get on with it and people will copy. Too much extra stuff that is not really necessary. Find a word, pronounce it and give a pause for people to copy, repeat and then move on.

MAuri ora the kupu I need help with a ia where to use it correctly
A good simple way to remember it is to always use "a ia" as opposed to just "ia" after "i" and "ki"
Correct:
Hoatu tēnā ki a ia
Kei te patu au ki a ia
I kite au i a ia
Incorrect
Kei te haere a ia (should be kei te haere ia)
Māku a ia e awhina (should be Māku ia e awhina)
I moe a ia (should be i moe ia)
