      It is an ergonomic lens & I love the rendering. I am not going to lug around a 1200+ gm lens for outdoor work. And with so much software possibilities the extra optics of the viltrox gives diminishing returns.

    I’m confused the 135gm was Sonys sharpest prime a few months ago, barely tell the difference vs the plena. Now it’s noticeably softer than the viltrox? How does it stack up to the plena then?

    I picked up the Samyang. On sale was $600ish and so light. Very good lens! One of my favorite lenses. No doubt the best lens under $750. Mark is correct on all accounts but I don't want that huge Viltrox nor that huge Sony price tag. There is so little difference between them (barring sports shooting) that the Samyang is the value champ for me. BTW on my Z8 and Sony A7111 I was getting an almost 70% hit rate for fast action on the Samyang.

    Thanks for this review. I have tested both the Samyang and Rokinon extensively before I returned them. For indoor sports use usually at 1/1000s+ and ISO 6,400~128,000 for indoor succor and indoor roller derby, these two only had less than 25% hit rats. I than purchase a 30 days returnable used Sony 135mm f/1.8 GM lens and the hit rate was 90%+ even at 30fps. As tempting as the amazing IQ and 50% off price it is to purchased the Viltrox and sell the Sony to have some good amount of cash back in my pocket... I will be keeping the Sony for now.

    Good comparison and interesting because Christopher Frost says the Samyang is sharper on his tests- wonder why?
    I love Viltrox ever since I bought the Nikon Z mount APSC 13mm F1.4 which is a fantastic lens with very nice look to it.
    Based on this review the Viltrox seems the best subject to price and weight not been an issue. The Samyang is expensive currently in the U.K. actually and the Viltrox is cheaper. However they are both over £700 currently I’d like to see them getting into the £500s before biting.

    I’ve been using the Sony Zeiss 135/1.8 with Sony A-mount plus a Sony native adapter to FE. Lens is just a shy under 1kg plus the LEA4 adapter which brings it close to the weight of the Viltrox. The Zeiss is heavenly, but it’s heavy. If I buy another 135/1.8 it will be the Samyang.

    Another great review of Camera Crisis!!! You ask and I will answer: Yes, I owned the Samyang lens a few months ago and I think it's a nice, cheap, almost perfect lens. The only issue I had was with the AF performance of my a6700. However, due to this particular issue, Samyang has released a new firmware. I had v03 on my lens. After the update via docking station (~25€ on eBay) the problem went away. I decided to buy the Samang instead of waiting for the Viltrox as I am a DxO user and the delay of the Viltrox lens modules in the Sony range was the point!

Lighter, and fantastic optics. I however have noticed its important to install any and all firmware updates... I bought the samyang 135 on release and it was for some weird reason draining the battery in the camera crazy fast... Update came and problem was solved. (Downside is it do need you to get the lens station to be able to update the firmware)... But the lens station is a one time buy and do not cost that much....

    The Sony focus rack was lightning fast, but I actually thought the SamYang focus rack looked the most pleasing despite it being slower, it felt more natural for video. I could see how the faster focus motors would be preferred for photo, though.

      @ you were able to adjust the focus speed to compensate for some of the shortcomings in a lens, but assuming Mark left all the settings the same it shows how responsive the lenses are to the same digital command from the camera. If we were to increase the focus tracking speed in the settings, the Sony would likely still be the fastest to grab focus.

    It looks to me like the depth of field on the Viltrox is slightly wider than the other two. I wonder if that plays into it appearing sharper? Maybe it’s not a true 1.8 and the other two are? Seemed like a slower drop off on the bokeh tests with more of the subject looking sharp. What do you think?
    That Sony is clinically sharp too from experience.
    Nice summary of the three overall but that was just something I noticed.
    Apart from the size and weight, Viltrox seems like a great buy and a friend has the Samyang so I know that’s great too. Three great options.

    • @MarkBennettCameraCrisis
      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  10 дней назад

      It's always possible. Since these are photography lenses not measured in T-stops, there is room for a little variation. For instance, the Viltrox exposed a little brighter at the same ISO's than the Samyang. But the viltrox does seem sharper even at the point of focus - however, the other two lenses are PLENTY sharp.

I'm doing talking videos, unboxing videos, and things like that, so shooting 4k and having a good focus is essential for me, is A6300 good at those? Do you think which is a better choice, a used A6300 for $430 or a zv-e10 for $530? and in your point of view does the number of shots impact on quality of the camera's videography? By the way, I think it's not a bad idea you do a video about the best setups for unboxing videos.

I can feel how heavy it is after shooting for a couple of hours, I can’t imagine carrying that 1.2kg Viltrox compared to 772g from Samyang. I can attest that it’s weather sealed after shooting with it on light rain for an open event. Samyang’s Astro Mode is a handy feature too. I have several videos about it on my channel too. Everyone's complaining about not many E=mount 1.4 primes made by sony, imagine they come out with a 135 1.2 😭

      Viltrox next LAB lenses would be 35 and 85 1.2

    • @mongini1
      @mongini1 10 дней назад +1

      they'd never do that... it would require a front lens element of at least 113mm, plus the space for the housing etc. That lens would have a diameter of at least 120mm and weight would be around 2 kilograms or even more. Not gonna happen 😅😅

      haha - I should be including that scale. Sigma's 135 is an old lens adapted from DSLR. They need an updated one. They don't even sell it on the official site anymore

    Mark is playing a trick with your eyes to make the Viltrox look better with some of the examples (fooled me at first).
    For the Sony/Samyang photo examples he (for whatever reason) increased the ISO values which introduced more noise.
    Perhaps the reason was a subjective one but definitely is skewing the results to make the Viltrox more favorable 👎👎

      @MarkBennettCameraCrisis  10 дней назад +8

      I didn’t increase anything. The Viltrox exposes brighter and the camera chose those settings in auto exposure. Dustin Abbott talks about it extensively in his review. I didn’t mention it because it doesn’t matter in the test. it’s about image quality. A tiny variation in ISO in a Sony camera will make zero difference, plus, noise was never mentioned. Please do not come back to this channel as I find your comment insulting as well as misinformed. I don’t work for Viltrox or Sony or anyone and I don’t care what you buy. I do care when people say I’m deceiving viewers. Shame on you.

      just because a lens has an aperture of 1.8 doesnt mean it lets through the exact same amount of light. Its just the physical size of the opening in relation to the focal length. The camera was in Auto ISO, and the Viltrox has better transmission. It boils down to the construction, amount of lenses and groups, their coatings, even the refractive index of individual elements. (normal vs. ED glass for example)
      Shame on you for insinuating that Mark is deceiving people, just because you dont know how lensen work...

      Just means the Viltrox is not only sharper but also a brighter lens making it more a f 1.7 for stupid cheap and no cat eyes bokeh.
      I have ordered mine already to save 15 % off the $899 and they are sending me a UV filter for free with my order. Holy moly!

    I'd like to see 135 mm f1.4 GM 🫠😃
    You might call me a freak, and say it will weigh a lot more, but I can guess it wouldn't be that much heavy today with Sony abilites to reduce weight in their lenses.

    Did you update the firmware on the Samyang? Because they do not come with the latest firmware and it makes a night and day difference in video for autofocus

      Yes - running the latest firmware. The autofocus is great - just a but slower than the Sony
