I have a 1975 and 1973 Bronco my 1973 is a three on the tree I never knew how to shift it until i watched this video. I like the easy straight forward get to the point on this video. Best I've watched yet. Thanks
Fortunately, I'm not one of those people. I learned to drive on a '66 Ford with an inline 6, and 3-on-the-tree. My first wife had a '64 Chevy with the same arrangement. Drove that one alot too.
I learned to drive in a 1963 Chevy Nova wagon 3 on the tree. My dad drove so slow that he would start off in first and then bypass second and shift into third and chug a long until he got up to speed. He also show me that you could shift without using the clutch if you timed the rpms just right. Wish I still had that car. Nobody wanted it back them (1973) but now they are gold.
Back in the day 3 Speed on the column was pretty much it! My Unkle has about as nice of 1939 Cheverolet 2Door as u will ever find! Still has original lacquer paint it’s a 3 Speed on the Column! I can remember riding in it whenever I was 3-4yrs old!!! Now I drive my Children & Grandchildren’s in it!!!
I learned to drive a three on the tree back in the day on my uncles ‘70 F100 with a 240 straight six. I loved that truck and inherited it when he passed. No power steering and manual drum brakes, it was so easy to work on.
My first car was a 1963 Chevy II with 3 on the tree. My next car was a 1973 Chevy Nova with a three speed automatic. I was driving my Nova onto an off ramp when my brain went back to 1963 and I subconsciously grabbed the shift lever for second gear and got park instead. No damage caused except to my shorts!
Driving one is a lost art. In fact, I haven't driven one myself since about 1979! (It was the first stick shift 4-wheeled vehicle I ever drove.) Back in '81, my '73 Bronco had the Hurst conversion 3-speed on the floor when I bought it. Was great when stuck in the mud as you could quickly rock between reverse and first. My current '74 Bronco has a 4-speed with granny first; great transmission for a working Bronco. (The 3-speed column appendage is still intact!) Three-speed column shifters tend to be clunking and even this newly redone Bronco shows that; I can shift my truck 4-speed about as quick! Nice Bronco though!... but I'll admit the first thing I'd do with it is a trans swap and cut the fenders front and back! :)
Six Stick is what I called my first car a 74 Maverick 2 door with air shocks and huge fatty tires on back. Had a lot of fun with that 3 on da 🌲 and yes it was a 6 banger hence 6-stick! It would still burn some rubber when I dumped the clutch!!(actually went through one clutch) great memories thanks Dennis!!
I guess im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a method to get back into an Instagram account?? I was stupid lost my account password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Hank Landry thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now. I see it takes quite some time so I will reply here later when my account password hopefully is recovered.
dude. You are the man when it comes to cars. Love watching your videos and I love how you take the time to find them with the goal of getting these old classics back on the road. Wow.
My first car was a '73 Holden HQ Kingswood wagon 3 on the tree. I loved it. When I was lazy I'd rev it out in 1st, skip 2nd & jump into 3rd. All 3 gears were syncro except reverse. Beautiful restoration of that Bronco.
Drove a 5 speed on the tree in a late 80's Nissan Van. Was in Japan, so steering wheel was on the right and it was 4WD. Very interesting to drive. Lots of fun.
I have a '66 Ford F100 1/2 ton pickup. It has the 352 v-8 with three on the tree. I had to learn to drive it, but it's a blast ! I also learned not to try to shift from third directly into first. It binds the linkage. At least it would on my truck. I should pull it out of the shed and get her going again !
I had a 1956 chevy 2 door 210 wagon that was 3 on the tree. I miss it. I'd love to have it back. I know where it is . As soon as it is safe for me to visit the owner I'm gonna try to buy it back . Thanks for sharing !
LOL... Back in '84 me and 3 buddies took a cross country trip in a 72 Dodge Tradesman van... Slant six and "three on the tree"... We were no Cannonball threat!!
Love it love it love it!!!! Awesome Bronco.....and I have a special place in my memory bank for the 3 on the tree..... I was "in and down" for 1st "out and up" for second 😉
I had a 68 Fairlane with a 6 cylinder with a 3 on the tree. With my brother's help. we swapped in a 289 Mustang 4 speed. Instead of using the Mustang shifter, we kept the column shift for a 4 on the tree. For reverse you had to shift into neutral and pull up on a rod with an 8 ball. and of course push it back down before shifting into first.lt was fun and different.
In 1984 I had a 1975 Bronco that was identical to this one right down to the color and the 3 speed. Completely rusted out. sold it to a 4x4 wrecking yard. Never thought it would be come collectible.
My Dad had a 65 Impala with a 283V8 and 3 speed manual....He put 107,000 miles on it and it still had the original clutch which worked fine when he traded it in. He also had a couple of ex-Air Force 1965 F100 shortbed stepsides with the 240 six and 3 on the tree. The shift linkage kept binding up on one of them so he found a granny gear 4 speed on the floor transmission in a parts truck and put that in to replace the 3 speed.
Believe it or not I drove a 65 Ford pickup yesterday that had a three on the tree. Guy brought it into the shop for a safety inspection and I was the only one who was old enough to be able to drive it.
I had a Maverick with three on the tree. I had a 72 Chevy half ton van, 305 with three on the tree. And I had an Aerostar with a five speed on the floor. I would gladly take any of them back.
That was awesome! I drive a manual Crossfire (since new n love it) but never understood how the 3 on the tree worked until saw you drive it. And it makes perfect sense now!
thx for the beautiful videos many people watch you here in my country but we all complain that videos are very short god bless you all ...AHMED FROM BAGHDAD IRAQ
Another Outstanding resto, column change always a funny drive until u get used to it, in the UK we only had it on French made Renault and Citroens from the 70's.....
Dennis as always your shop does such beautiful work. My first driving experience was in a Studebaker lark three on the tree as well thanks for the memories.
I learned to drive manual on the last of the Malibu's with 3 on the tree. 6 cylinder of course. Almost bought it for cheap at $250 in the early '80's. I want to say '81.
I had a 75 bronco with a 302 and a 3 OTT. Was broke and had to sell it in 02. Then I bought another one in 2019, me and my 8 y/o son are rebuilding her. Hopefully I can keep this one. Even jeep guys love broncos.
Currently teaching my daughter to drive in a 1978 CJ-7 with a T-150 3 speed. I learned in a 67 c-10 with a 283 and three on the tree. It's interesting how when something is so ubiquitous, it becomes less and less interesting. For example: From the 1940's through the 1950's, most cars and trucks were column shift. A 3 or 4 in the floor was very unique and desirable. Buckets seats were unique in place of the ubiquitous bench seat. I'd like to have a horizontal speedo like GM cars had in the 80's. Everything today is just round gauges.
Thanks Dennis, I am embarrassed to say that I really didn’t know how to drive one till now . I’m in my 50’s and have driven hundreds of vehicles over the years Military and civilian and never got the chance . Nice Bronco .
I have driven a column shifter it was I think a 80-81 gmc work van, I had never driven a manual like this before , I was shown the gear positions and rest is history!
I’ve got a 1969!international travel all 4x4 all wheel drive,345 v8,4 speed.hasn’t been started since 2004/2005 approximately.it is a tank, could comfortably seat 7-8 people.wish I could afford to have you do a complete frame off build, maybe one of these days? lol Love all your videos!
First thing I drove with a manual trans. was a 1954 Mack fire engine. Had a Mack 707 cu. in. Straight 6 gas engine. 5 speed non-synchro transmission (1st gear granny low, 5th gear overdrive). Manual steering, steering wheel the size of a barrel lid. Since transmission was non-synchro, you had to double clutch up shifting & down shifting. Might be good topic for a future video???
I had a 77 ford pickup. 2wd short bed. 2 tone blue and creme color. It had a 429 thunderjet out of a 68 thunderbird. It had a 3 speed but it was in the floor and it was hooked up backwards so 1st was up. You could smoke the tires thru the gears. I wish I kept it. The bed was toast though. Everything else was in great shape but bed. It was so loud. My son loved it (about 5 yrs old)but if I was showing it to someone he ask if I was gonna start it and if I said yes he would take off running to house with his hands over his ears. He said it was too loud. It had headers and glass packs with duels straight out back. It would rattle windows in the house.
I learned how to drive in my 3 speed on the column 56 Chevy 2 door post. It's just an h pattern on the side of the steering column. First mod was a floor shifter, ooh it looked like a 4 speed!......
My dad had a three on the column on his old Ford Fairlane wagon. Sometimes when stopped at a red light the linkage would somehow get stuck. I'd have to jump out of the car pop the hood and take a tire iron and push the linkage until it freed up and off we'd go. I must have been 11 or 12.
Nothing sounds better than a cammed small block Ford! Beautiful Bronco!
I have a 1975 and 1973 Bronco my 1973 is a three on the tree I never knew how to shift it until i watched this video. I like the easy straight forward get to the point on this video. Best I've watched yet. Thanks
My first car was a 1964 Falcon with a 6 cylinder and a 3 speed column shift. I’ve always loved that combo.
Love Broncos
Absolutely great memories my first truck was a 67 f100 352 v8 3 on the tree love them
Nothing like a 3 on the column. I learned on a 1958 F-100. Man that is a slick Bronco. Just the right amount of mod but still stock.
Thats great!!! DENNIS, THAT MUST MAKE YOU FEEL LIKE A TEENAGER ALL OVER AGAIN- MOST PEOPLE WOULD NEVER UNDERSTAND WHAT 3-ON-THE-TREE IS!!!!! Bob H.
Fortunately, I'm not one of those people.
I learned to drive on a '66 Ford with an inline 6, and 3-on-the-tree.

Pretty much the same here except it was a '66 4 door.
Back in the day 3 Speed on the column was pretty much it! My Unkle has about as nice of 1939 Cheverolet 2Door as u will ever find! Still has original lacquer paint it’s a 3 Speed on the Column! How could not like this bronco. Cool build. Thanks
Brings back memories of high school!
Man that's one beautiful 69 Early Bronco brother and that 302 Windsor V8 sounds badass.
That is how I learned to drive back in the day Dennis , brings back some good and fun memories. Good looking Bronco.
Broncos with manual steering were a handful. Great video Dennis, keep up the good work.

3 on the tree brings back great memories, especially having to pop the hood and reneutralize the damn thing after it gets stuck between gears.
I guess im asking the wrong place but does anybody know of a method to get back into an Instagram account??
I was stupid lost my account password. I love any assistance you can give me
@Fisher Junior Instablaster =)
@Hank Landry thanks so much for your reply. I found the site through google and I'm in the hacking process now.

Beautiful and cool Dennis
Thanks Dennis I always wondered about the old three on the tree
that thing is awesome
I had a 71 for 10 yrs. Sweet ride.
I learned on dad's 66 Bronco, straight 6, with a 3 on the tree. Brings back some memories, watching you drive that 69.
My first car was a '73 Holden HQ Kingswood wagon 3 on the tree. I loved it. When I was lazy I'd rev it out in 1st, skip 2nd & jump into 3rd. All 3 gears were syncro except reverse. Beautiful restoration of that Bronco.
Awesome 👍🏾👍🏾 my dad's old wagon was three on the tree, Australian Holden wagon straight 6 I learned to drive 😊
My first car in high school was a 73 Bronco Sport 302 with 3 on the tree! I miss it!
Bronc is outstanding, very nice indeed, congrats Dennis.
I learned how to drive in a 1964 ford f100 straight six 3 speed on the column 👍🏽
This was ALSO my first clutch replacement :)
My first car was a 69 Plymouth Valiant slant 6 three on the tree. Thanks for the memory.
Very nice. Mr Collins you have some beautiful jeeps.
I learned to drive with a 3-on-the-tree 1965 Chevy BelAir. It was a monster, and a handful to heel-toe on hills, but I loved it!
Thanks for the memories Dennis. Learned to drive on a geriatric, crusty, rusty 1962 Plymouth Valiant, slant 6, 3 on the tree. Fun car to drive.
Beauty. Enough said
Had a 68 FJ40, 3 on the tree. That synchro first gear on the bronco makes things nice. Beautiful rig
Drove a 5 speed on the tree in a late 80's Nissan Van. Was in Japan, so steering wheel was on the right and it was 4WD. Very interesting to drive. Lots of fun.
You shift 3 on the tree perfectly!
I have a 1976 Dodge Ramcharger with a 3 on the tree and 318 LA engine. It is so fun driving 3 on the tree!
I drove three on the tree pick up trucks for years. Starting with a 1947 International KB-1. I learned how to double clutch on that one.
My first vehicle was a 3 on the tree 84 chevy pickup I loved that thing
Very cool. That three speed shifter, definitely brings back memories for me, too.
Love the Ford V8 sound. They still sound like that.
I have a '66 Ford F100 1/2 ton pickup. It has the 352 v-8 with three on the tree. I had to learn to drive it, but it's a blast ! I also learned not to try to shift from third directly into first. Awesome Bronco.....and I have a special place in my memory bank for the 3 on the tree.....
I was "in and down" for 1st "out and up" for second 😉
Sweet. I'm 52 and never saw how a 3 on the tree worked. I can beat the hell out of a 4 speed on the floor. COOL
Learned how to drive on 3-speed 1963 Plymouth when I was 17. took a while to get used to driving it without Bronco busting it.
I had a 68 Fairlane with a 6 cylinder with a 3 on the tree. With my brother's help. we swapped in a 289 Mustang 4 speed. Instead of using the Mustang shifter, we kept the column shift for a 4 on the tree. My dad had an Australian made Holden HQ with 3 on the tree. First gear was up second was straight down and third was up across and up.
Awesome videos! Keep them coming

Manual Transmission: Millennial Theft Deterrent
Always fun time hearing ya rip up and down our street 🤘
My '63 Comet had 3 on the tree. I bought it in '85 and no one who rode with me had ever seen one :)

Love your channel, huge fan from Portugal
I learned to drive a three on the tree, in my dad’s 1976 F150. Even lacked power steering.
Dennis Collins & Richard Rawlings know their classic cars
They always work better fresh, I had a 65 f150 with a 3ott it was miserable until I freshened up the column.
I learned really quick how. Get unstuck from between 1st and 2nd. LOL 😂
I learned to drive on a three on the tree in a 1970 C10 pickup. Still have the truck in storage

Today, even the nicest luxury cars have bucket seats and a gear selector in the console. A bench seat and a gear selector on the column is considered uncommon. love that truck !!! miss the old 3 on the tree lol
What a sweet bronco! Great job!
1948 to 1950 Willys Jeepster 4x4 build. I know you want to do it. Who else would love to see it?
My first car was a 69 3 on the tree bronco, I learned how to drive it by driving around my neighborhood. I was 15 years old.
Man that Bronco sounds good. I love a 3 on the tree. First one I ever drove was an early 70's Chevy C 10 pickup. They are so much fun to drive.

Love all your videos!
I also learned to drive On my grandfather’s Ford 100 pick up 3 on the tree , he he also how to be a carpenter 36 years ago
Badass very nice work!
3 on the tree is what I learned on. A 1967 Jeep Wagoneer 327 Vigilante with a 3 on the tree.
