Ella habla un inglés muy muy fluido y correcto, simplemente ha conservado el acento, y os lo digo yo que soy hispanocanadiense. I would like to add that most people in Spain learn British English. And you can not pick American English overnight, you see... A kid wouldn't have a problem, but for an adult it's not that easy, especially if you are working hard.
Penelope's job is very demanding and she is always traveling (would be "travelling" in the Queen's English, btw) all over the world for her shooting, interviews, press conferences... always with a fresh smile on her face!
I totally agree with you. The problem we have in Spain when it comes to learning English is a very specific one: the teaching method (which leads to students being able to pass English exams but not being able to put a sentence together when they have to speak in English). Yes, students can PASS their English exams but when it comes to HANDLING a real conversation in English they are like: "Ehhh... Yes, yesterday I go to the beach and... eh... I have fun". Assembly line English.

Well she speaks like 5 languages besides spanish and english. I saw vicky christina barcelona last night and got to meet her after because my father is an actor. She was the most humble person I could have ever imagined. She says to this day she is still afraid she is going be fired on a film and thinks of life as an adventure.

Almodovar.... Pedro Almodovar is the most prominent Melodrama filmmaker in Spain. He is very talented. He understands women like no other filmmaker, so for women, it is kind of a privilege to work with him.
First movie that I saw Penelope Cruz in was Bandidas, but the last was in the Counselor. No matter, I wish her more success.
Some people say that when you hear an accent so much--you'll get tired of it.. But I haven't---Not with Penelope Cruz. There's something about her that fascinates and captivates me and others. I admire the way she started her US career speaking almost no English, and she has come very far towards proficiency. She speaks it better than a lot of Puerto Ricans. :D
@AthloneTramp Hispanic refers to the term Hispania which is a Latin word which refers to the Iberian peninsula. Therefore in a literal translation it refers to anyone with Portuguese or Spanish ancestry but most people in America refer to anyone with Spanish ancestry as Hispanic. So Penelope is Spanish & Hispanic.

Does she diserve an Oscar? Beyond her beauty, sexy accent, nationality or whatever, I think this girl manages to transmit feelings when she acts. She plays natural, easy, credible. It doesnt really matter if she won the Oscar or not, in my opinion, she is one of the best present actors all over the world.

@polychronio English is a language, that is a form of communication, as long as you can communicate with others then the language has served its purpose. It doesn't matter who speaks it or how it sounds as long as you communicate.

in fact, the accent is not mexican... it's spanish (from Spain, Europe). It's a common mistake, there are lots of people in Spain that cannot tell the difference between an american and a brittish accent (or a british and a australian one).

I'm spanish, and I need to say; the Spanish are not Hispanic.
The Spanish we come from Europe, that is to say our genetic inheritance comes principally from Europe.
The Hispanics come from the mixture of Spanish (Portuguese and Italians also) with the native races of central america and the south america.
The intention of the post is it of correcting a very common mistake; to believe that the Spanish and Hispanics have same Genetic precedents.

Depende de la zona de España, somos más blancos o con la piel dorada o morena. Yo, por ejemplo, soy de Madrid y soy blanquísima, sin embargo mi padre también es de Madrid y es moreno, tiene la piel como los árabes. Pero eso ya da igual, ya apenas quedan países en los que queden "razas puras", no se puede especificar un tono concreto de piel.

Actually, her English is better than that of many Americans I know. I'm an English teacher , qualified and experienced.
Learning a foreign language takes time and you need to work hard at it. Please try before criticising! Getting rid of your "accent" can take you a lifetime and you may never make it, not 100% however hard you try. But you can make your second language sound understandable and even decent. And Penelope certainly does a good job there.

Castellano (Castillian) and Español (Spanish) are the same language, both terms are synnonyms. "Castillian" is simply more commonly used to refer to spanish spoken in the center areas os Spain (Castilla, where the term obviously comes from), but technically, Latinamericans speak Spanish OR Castellano, and so do Spaniards.

Why is everyone so worried about her accent? It's cute and kind of charming. Before criticizing the way she speaks, ask yourself if your Spanish is as good as her English. And what is wrong with her lips? Nothing is wrong, the fact is that your mouth gets used to move and pronounce the sounds of a language your whole life, then of course it's difficult to change when you speak another language.
Its mentally disturbing to hear someone invisible speaking, scrutinizing or playing around your aurora.
I'm not famous and I have people following me as if I am.

Yes the Spanish ARE Hispanic but that does not mean that 'Hispanic' means the same as 'Spanish'. The term Hispanic comes from 'Hispania' which was the name given by the Romans to the entirety of what we now know as the Iberian peninsula, it therefore includes both modern day Spain and Portugal. Because both these countries had significant cultural impact in South America the term Hispanic is often used to refer to countries in that continent as well. 'Spanish' refers solely to modern day Spain.

@ShelleyE92 no, that's just correct spanish. Just like in english lisp is used with "Th.". North american English and south american and Caribbean spanish are different than the original form of the language in a few ways as far as how words are used and the accent.
