There needs to be a slope from the building to the edge of the awning. Otherwise, you will get water puddling. Since there is no seal between the wall and awning, you are going to have water get trapped between them, this can lead to the paneling to prematurely rusting.

@billmadison2032 the siding will rust, it's not aluminum. Also, since he drilled into the building and it is not sealed, water can now get inside and soak into the spray foam if it is open cell. If it is closed cell it will cause the inside of the wall to start rusting.

Everyone has made some pretty good comments. My suggestion would be put a 45 sea container on the left side of the garage and put in 2 man doors, one in the container, one in the shop. Wouldn’t need a lift to get to anything. I would put it close enough that you could step into it without touching the ground. If it’s not connect to the shop then it’s not expanding the building size.

Just a kind suggestion. Pallet racking is fast, stout, and you can do a lot with it. Store engines, parts, whatever. The only space youd lose is the uprights on the floor.
You can also weld to it making your own light brackets, hose rack, whatever.
I made my own shelves, theyre fun and all if you want to spend all day. Or just spend the $300 bucks to get a couple uprights and a couple shelves. Time saved>money spent. More utility and you dont have to hang off your walls.

    • @racing4recovery593

Get some of the roofing material used from the shop and place the edge of the roof structure past the patio (add a slope). Get crazy and add gutters to the shop, include the new structure.
Dig two footings for sonotube to your region min depth (aka frost line where I live). Use those footings to support the roof structure. Use a veener over the vertical studs that matches the shop siding. Trim the roof how the shop looks and bob is your uncle!

Well my 2 cents, did you think about rain pudding on the material, might want to add a pitch so water runs off. Water might get trapped and run down the wall of the building. With the acrylic the hot sun temp is gonna have an affect. Lets talk about your wind/storms, will the wind get ahold of that sail and rip it off??? I feel like these types of videos arnt a popular thing anymore like they used to be. Like everyone would show house upgrades or garage upgrades but just don’t anymore I always enjoy these types of videos.

You can get tinted poly like that as well which would be better for shade

Today was a good day. Looks good to me, maybe some tint but I'm here for the clear. I would see how it does in a storm before doing anything in case you want more changes after being battle tested.

U could’ve really angled the mounting points for the braces to get some height out of them. The awning needs a pitch anyways so water will go where u want it too.

Since it's just two hours of sunlight that hits it, seems like the main thing you were interested in was rain protection anyway. I almost wonder if putting some kind of design in the aluminum awning part to break it up and tie it together with more lexan would do wonders, then paint it, tint the lexan and call it a day. I personally don't think the lexan part looks bad, I think it's just the clashing of the two materials so if you could find a way to incorporate some of the lexan into it to break it up it might look better.

Love the idea of a bigger awning, but I personally would’ve extended out past the concrete to cover the whole thing and put supports in the ground like the back of the shop. But it’s your shop and I’ll watch the videos no matter what you do. Love the content.

I’d put a center support on that, strong storm or hurricane will likely bend that or rip it off.

23:40 haven't watched further yet but you could use the shade for the AC condenser on the sunny side of the shop.

I like the clear idea! Think it would be cool with a slight downslope(so water goes away from building), and you could get away with a couple center supports that dont come down as far as the end ones for headroom.

Clear acrylic isn't going to provide much shade . If anything it will just make the Sun seem hotter .

You can always try the corrugated pvc that comes in clear and smoked so you still get some light and it looks pretty good. Plus it’s not very expensive

It’s a valiant effort. It’s functional what more can a guy ask for. If you were to do it again I’d probably do two posts out at the edge of the slab and build a more sloped roof using corrugated roofing and they make the same material in see through plastic for the sky light affect, or a gable end would look nice off of the door and give you a better view, either way great job as always. Just some food for thought. Cheers.

I do commercial and residential window tint for a living and I will say that window film does not like to stick to plastic or acrylic I’ve always had a bad time trying to ever get it to work but I will say vinyl will work better for that than thin non stretchy film with how much it flex’s

I like the handheld footage you shot because it feels more conversational and you can focus attention easier, but if you do more please consider investing in better image stabilization. Maybe its just because I already have a headache but those clips were hard to watch.

I think an RV awning would be a really easy option here. It could be way larger so it can actually offer shade all day, fully retractable, sloped, way easier to install and still pretty cheap if you pick up a used frame. I know you like a fab project but this seems like a lot more work for a less refined end result.

Mull the overhang thingy for a bit. Weigh the pro and cons and see if there's other things that need adjustment; like if it will do the job against the rain or not. etc etc. :) it is cool! The clear thingy is nice for night time I guess - especially with how late you seem to work sometimes. However, tinting it would solve a lot of things too!!! But then might block some of the stars overhead but shrug - you got a whole big yard to look up from!!! My remote virtual thoughts :) good luck whatever you decide and as I have said in the past, it's your shop (or rather car in the past lol) so do what makes YOU happy! I admire it as it is now!!! if it has some built in thingy to drive away mosquitos, even better!!!! *grin*
