Raciborz now Ratibor in Poland 1950's , information about the city, its industry and work and how they affect the farming and rural life of its environs after World War Two]
This is film starts off in Raciborz (Ratibor) in Poland which is situated on the river Odra (Oder) in Poland. It depicts the industry and work of the area as well as farming and rural life in the Silesian area of Poland.
The film pans over the rooftops of the beautiful old renaissance style town of Raciborz
(Ratibor) in Poland which is situated on the river Odra (Oder). We see the old town square of Raciborz in Poland, panning across from right to left with a monument with a pillar on the left hand side, two children on what looks like a tandem cycling in the foreground, a man carrying a suitcase with a woman walking across from left to right and a man with two children approaching an ice cream? vendor in the middle - the shot pans across the square showing the fine renaissance buildings, the central building, in the background has scaffolding on it - we pan across to the corner building which has an arcade and we see lots of people walking in the square and a number of motor cyclists.
The shot blacks out and then a woman (called Aniela Kochanowska?) with a long plat and wearing Polish national costume consisting of a long skirt and apron walks past a tree, away from the camera and down towards the river. The same woman wearing a white headdress walks along by the river on a path with railings behind her and the river and buildings in the background. Two women in national costume; one of them, in a long floral skirt, picks something from the hedgerow and shows it to her friend who is already holding a plant in her hand, they walk off together towards the right of the camera. The same two women walk off along the country lane - we see their white blouses with short white sleeves and headdresses as they walk with their backs to the camera. Two women with white headdresses and in national costume cross what looks like a wooden bridge and a further three women with headdresses and lace and ribbons in their hair walk in from the right and join up with the two women who have walked across the bridge - in the background we see a group of further women all walking together. These residents of Raciborz belong to the Folk Choir called “Echo” one of a number of Folk Choirs in the Opole Region of Poland and they are going for their rehearsal. A group of women, in national costume, with ribbons and laces in their hair, all walk together, talking and laughing. A group of women walk along by the river together , they shake hands and are greeted by a number of women and then they arrange themselves together to form a choir on the riverbank, with the male conductor at the front, he then starts to conduct the choir and the choir starts to sing a song in Polish. There is a close up shot of the male conductor wearing waistcoat and in shirtsleeves conducting; the shot pans from right to left across the faces of the women in national costume singing a song in Polish.
The shot fades out and then we see the countryside with the soundtrack playing of the women still singing. Another shot of the countryside with fields and a horse drawn plough in the field moving from right to left. We see a close up of what could be wheat in the foreground and industrial the background, from one of the chimneys smoke is pouring out. A small railway engine with smoke coming from its funnel crosses an industrial landscape from right to left. It was here that the poison was manufactured that killed millions of people in the concentration camps during the Second World War. The scene pans across from right to left along a large industrial chemical works with a gasometer on the right which was built out of the ruins of the earlier industry. Another shot of large industrial works with large pipes carrying chemicals in the middle, one of the biggest chemical industries in Europe and second largest industry in Poland after Nowa Huta in Poland. Further shots of large pipes overhead. Four men walk towards four giant silos in the foreground...
Huntley Film Archives is a film library holding tens of thousands of films. The large majority of the films are documentaries. Films cover a wide range of subjects and production dates range from the 1890’s to the 2020’s. As with all libraries we make no judgement on the content of our holdings and make them available for educational purposes for all to see. Films may have content or express opinions some may think inappropriate or offensive, but it is not the work of a library to censor educational resources. Films should be viewed with historical objectivity and within a context relevant to the times in which they were produced
