While I have heard it called a "crude hoax", I strongly disagree. Whoever was the perpetrator, he definitely possessed knowledge far beyond that of probably upwards of 98% of the general population. My top three suspects have been Charles Dawson, Martin Hinton, and Pierre Teilhard Chardin -- or some combination thereof. I view the third suggestion (PTC) as the least likely, though he was the pick of Stephen Jay Gould.

Charles Dawson was definitively named as the perpetrator in 2016.

@@dunebasher1971 Many people have been "named". Explain. Named by whom? On what conclusive evidence?

Like the Cardiff Giant and other hoaxes, a fascinating study in human group-think.

The Cardiff Giant was a creationist fraud, not an evolutionary fraud.
There has never been a point in history when evolution predicted the existence of giants.

George Hull was an atheist. He created the Cardiff Giant to discredit creationism.

I asked you for a reference in your previous comment.
I wasn't considering covering it in an episode of my series, "How Creationism Taught Me Real Science" because it really wasn't an evolutionary "fraud", but if you could help me out, I would be able to make it happen.

Both hoaxes were most likely intended to show up the folly of belief and hubris: Cardiff - the notion that giants once walked the Earth because some reference in the Bible said so, and Piltdown that the English scientific academy was right in its belief that England might reveal the motherlode of humanoid evolution with this missing link proving such and perhaps, England's superiority to Holland, France and Germany.

what part did the goose play? was he invited? how come he came to be there? was he supervising the excavation?

The goose, named Clarence, was used as a sort of watchdog as he was very territorial and kept outsiders out of the dig site and quite a local celebrity.

Sorry the goose was named Chipper, not Clarence.

It was a hint that the search for the "missing link" was a wild goose chase :D

if you were going to take pictures while you were at the site digging I would have at least taken 1 of what I had found..not just a staged fun pic with a goose..as HOP commented below..they my as well of put a goose tooth in it ,eh?

Evolution is a fact. Discovering the Piltdown hoax took time. Pale in comparison to what religious people fabricate.

Antoine le You bozo, it was science that discovered the piltdown hoax. Christianity is one huge hoax. Everything about it is crap.
