What rubbish. America loved her as well - what you fail to understand or realize is that it was US radio that kept her from being a bigger 'hit' here. Over-marketing, hair-splitting format-izing nonsense kept her from being played on the radio to the extent she should have been. I spent many years in radio, so I saw this happen over and over... Thankfully, her fans never left here, no matter the country. She herself explained in an interview that it was radio and promotion aspects that somewhat shadowed her star, here.
Absolutely! I too worked in radio for 9 years and what you said about formats and genres is spot on. Urban radio corporate programmers felt she was Rock not R&B, yet AOR hardly played her either, maybe due to age or race? Truthfully, it was deplorable what happened to American radio in general once the FCC deregulated and Clear Channel bought up nearly all the stations. Corporate playlists determined by suits instead of the DJ's of old, who LOVED music. I was mostly news, but had one stint as strictly a voice talent -- I didn't get to influence the station playlist, I just announced and back-announced what was played. The fact that Americans lined up to gobble up and sell out her '93, '97, 2000, and 2009 tours, yet her last major hit was in the summer of 93 says everything you need to know! No one, not no one else, has ever managed to sell out tours without having hits on the radio. Not to mention selling Gold and Platinum albums. Sting sang the male vocal part on the studio track. This performance sounds like a playback except for the male vocal.
Male voice sang by John Miles in this performance otherwise yes it sounds like playback.
I think a lot of these type of TV shows insist upon miming which is a shame as Tina can sing as we know. TOTP was famous for the lip-synching.
