When I saw the description of the video yesterday I thought “That’s not going to be as interesting as usual “, but I was completely wrong. This was super! I know my day is going to be a good one when I spend time with my church family and the Wiseguy😎
I've driven that stretch of I-70 from Salina thru Green River more times than I can remember. Beautiful country. The first time I drove it there was a long section between Salina and Green River that was still a 2 lane highway. The 4 lane interstate wasn't finished yet. Initially only two lanes, now the eastbound lanes, through the swell were constructed. The official highway map for Utah noted the new freeway but qualified its existence with the words "two lanes open"
I live here. Harley Dome is an ancient volcanic upswell. Unlike all the other hills that are ancient seabed and basic clay, Harley Dome is BLACK volcanic. That's why it's marked on the map. Kool! You actually got to see some pronghorns! I can remember back in the early 90's when there were entire valleys out there filled with them and Elk. Now you are lucky to see even a few. \Now this entire area is filled with transient roads that may or may not actually exist. Natural Gas well heads and other mining keep them changing...
@@TravelwithaWiseguy You can still find, on occasion, some quartz crystals and other geologically interesting items on and around Harley. Most have been raped and pillaged by rock hounds. The region is mostly Pre-Cambrian with only a few Cambrian and later outcrops where you MIGHT still find a Trilobite or two. Down by I-70 a few miles south is where the Dinosaur layers still exist. Not much left there now though, the local Mesa County college thieves stole most of it to put in their dinosaur museum to charge money to touristas. I made a mistake back in the early 90's showing some old dude I had met out there, a huge bone outcrop. Next thing I know, 150 students out there, digging up ALL the rocks and now, there's nothing left. They stole every bit of it...
Eastern Utah has wide open areas with gorgeous views. The mnts scene and sunset are never disappoint ing or boring. The shop with jerky had a large selection interesting. Neat journey .
Salina, Utah has some interesting history. It was a German POW camp during the war and is famous (or infamous) for an incident known as the 'Salina Massacre'.
I worked in Green River in the '60s and for a town of around 1,00 people it had 7 bars! Big event each year was the boat cruise down the Green River to the Colorado River turning at Meander Canyon and going upstream to Moab. Highlight of the trip was a cookout at Water Canyon on sat.night.
That area along the I-70 between Green River and Salina might be the most beautiful stretch of Interstate Highway in the country. It always takes me forever to get across it, because I stop at every overlook. Your video brought back a lot of great memories.
Such beauty and grandeur. And you had it almost entirely to yourself. Cannot beat that. Glad you brought us along. Definitely a road less traveled, but traveling it is rewarding. Thank you for bringing is along once again!
It would help been a shame to pass up that t-shirt- what a conversation starter 😄 That store owner had a crazy sense of humor, I hope the jerky was good. I'm really glad you kept getting distracted by the pull outs, stunning views and great drone shots. Loved the Antelope. I really am hoping we get to go to Utah someday, such hauntingly beautiful country. I'm excited to see your Moab video, really beautiful, rugged country. I love watching your videos, for just awhile I can leave my cares and travel along. Stay safe and GOD bless
Before I-70 was constructed, there was no direct route between Green River and Salina. You had to take US-191 from Green River to Wellington and then to Price. From there you could go south and west to Salina. I looked at an old map, and It appears that very little of that part was paved at the time. At good side trip is to take UT-24 to Goblin Valley, Hanksville, and Glen Canyon.
Now that's incredible. The beauty of the landscape, and also that old road. Wow. Sometimes it's hard to believe a road that small was once a major thoroughfare. Hope you got good tires and shocks on your car! 😆😁
@@TravelwithaWiseguy Mine neither. Don't get me wrong, I love my 26 year old Toyota Corolla, but it's past its prime and with no cruise control, egads, definitely not a road warrior type vehicle.
GREAT ride! What beauty!! I saw those rock tunnels on the side of the highway.....I think my parents may have traveled that in the 1950's, bc I think I have a picture of them by one of those! Gonna have to look that up! I could sure hang out on this trip awhile! Thank you for another great video!
Great video. As a Grand Junction resident, I've driven all of Old US 6 between Fruita, Colorado, and Green River, Utah. We also did the part from Salina, UT to I-15 on the way to Meadow Hot Springs.
At Green River when they say no service for a long ways they aren't kidding. Ridden thru the area west bound heading to the coast on the hawg . Very beautiful and you captured it well.
6 towns in 335 miles in utah… is amazing… where i live theres NYC, trenton, philly, Wilmington, Baltimore, DC, fredericksburg and Richmond all in 330 miles
Kind of mind blowing that when you leave Colorado, the road turns to gravel....? And that's a Hiway? Guess they figured most would hop on the Interstate, so no need to pave Old 50. Just my guess. Once again, beautiful vistas! I would have a hard time as well passing by without stopping. After all, how often are you in that neighborhood? 😎 Thanks so much for another great leg to this journey! 🚙💨💨💨
Yeah the definition of Highway has probably changed throughout the years 😂😂 It was a long day, but I could’ve stayed out there all night! In fact I filmed two other videos that day coming out in the upcoming Thursdays 😊
Awesome scenery. Definitely worth pulling over to capture more vlog and photos. And that section of US 50 is definitely not the place to suffer a breakdown. Not sure if you had adequate cell service. A person could wait a while until someone comes to get you.
The river a 2"16......is that the Colorado River. Another question.....no gas stations on that long stretch of road? Do they warn you to fill up as you enter that area? That was a beautiful drive.
Yes it is the Colorado River! They usually have signs saying how far the next service station is. So yeah fill up if you’re worried about it, but I never got close to running out.
I worked in Utah, up around Roosevelt, in the oil industry. Very pretty, but honestly, a little creepifying. Roosevelt is near the world famous Skinwalker Ranch, with all kinds of weird UFO activity. I never saw any, but talked to lots of local folks who have. 😳
How tough was it to find the original highway? If I were doing this trip I would be so confused looking at roads like "Old Harley Dome Rd" and wondering if that was the original road or just an access road to the town.
Yes it was often difficult and confusing. There’s not great info online about all the different iterations, but each week I seem to find a little more. It makes me want to try and compile together a comprehensive list of all the roads that are/were US 50. I’m sure it’s out there but I haven’t seen it.
One of my favorite parts of the country! By the way, did you get threatened to have your drone shot down over Cisco? I was there in May and had two guys threaten me!
Thank you! No one said anything to me. The only person there was the lady who ran the store and she told me I could do anything I wanted as long as I was respectful.
Wow, it was a guy mowing at the store that first threatened me--I was just flying around the town along the road from the store parking lot. The other guy drove over from his house behind the store--the lady in the store didn't care (my wife was in there at the time)! I wasn't doing anything crazy, just circling the town!?! That was in May and on a weekend as I remember. @@TravelwithaWiseguy
Hey thanks! I like the detail! I was at truck driver for YEARS! Lol.. I always used a motor carrier atlas because of low bridges etc.. I need this one for semi retirement travel 😎🍻
God's Country, right there! Grand Junction to Salina! Magnificent!

Really appreciate the drone views. I've never seen many pictures of Utah. It doesn't get noticed like a lot of other places. Thank you. Stay safe.
I have always enjoyed exploring Utah - I agree it doesn’t get its fair share of attention!

Thanks for a good day. I would like to see the places you were at. Good place not to break down.

Good trip but you did miss part of the old highway that went thru Price, Helper and on to Spanish Fork. U.S. 50 then wandered west to Delta Ut.

No cell service out there - and if I broke down it would be several miles to walk to the main road. Luckily it worked out!
