What’s the proper pronunciation of Te Anau? The ‘te’ seems to be pronounced differently for this word than others…?
Hi there! I love this video! I am teaching my daughter to read using the beautiful books the new Ready to Read Phonics Plus books the Ministry of Education have given to schools. They include Maori words and I needed this lesson to help me teach her the Maori vowel sounds. We came across the word 'kai' and she knew it as 'k-igh' as this is how it sounds when she hears her preschool teachers saying it. Therefore I underlined the ai and we said 'igh'. When we looked it up on the Maori dictionary online, it says it like you have explained in this video...like k-igh-ee . And in your other videos you explain how when we say them fast, the sounds kind of change a little. For example in Kei, the 'ei' sounds like 'ay'. Therefore, I am unsure whether to teach the double vowels as a whole unit, so ei is 'ay' or separately e+i. Any thoughts? There is no expectation for beginning readers of English to know the double vowel sounds individually, but I would like her pronouncing them correctly.
Kia ora Amber, thanks for your comment! It depends on the age and level of understanding. It's good to teach both ways alongside each other, but fine to teach the double vowel sounds if that's easier. Great to hear you are learning alongside your daughter!
You rock! (:
Taputapu kē!

hmmm... something about that song sounds familiar... can't put my finger on it though...
Well, the Vowel Short and Long sounds r Same as our Thamizh (Tamil) - World oldest language under the sun -
In Thamizh
We have 12 Vowels
Short Long
A aa
E ee
I
O oo
U uu
Ea Eaa
Consonants r 18
Ka
Sa
Da
Tha
Pa
Ra
Ya
Ta
La
Va
LLa
Zha
La
Gna
Yna
Nama
Na
Nna
Then we add both Vowels and Consonants to make anither 216 letters like same way as the Maori.
Since Thamizh (Tamil) is the world oldest living language and 99% or millions of Tamil words have roots in Tamil itself, the Maori language also must be based on Tamil language.
