DJI Avata - STUNNING STORY after drone crash near a military zone

  • in this surprisingly emotional adventure I talk about how an FPV drone crash and more failures turned to a really inspiring story because I was persistent enough. I destroyed my DJI Avata, but meanwhile I have a new one and I don't regret anything.
    But the story goes deeper. It dives into some life aspects and the emotional connection between a viewer and a creator, I call this "the link". In my humble opinion, it is the true art of filmmaking to create such a link. Cameras etc. are awesome, I love it, but basically they are just tools to create a link. I'm maximum a 1st-year apprentice in this art... :)

    I enjoyed the follow-up. You are indeed a story-teller!
    Is there going to be another episode with the video of the impact as captured on the drone? I have been having a slow motion exchange with DJI about some small damage to my Avata after I experienced the "yaw turn" bug earlier this year (although it was a different kind of manoeuvre that induced the fast pitch forward to inverted and subsequent hard crash into the ground). Since then I only fly with a small piece of electrical tape over the SD card door as that opened in the crash and was damaged by the still spinning prop. The damage is such that I don't really trust the door to stay shut by itself now. Maybe you still have your damaged drone as I can not find any other way to get just a replacement "door" and I don't want to pay NZ $50 for the whole prop guard including door part! 🙂
    You are lucky to live in such a wonderful area. I can't complain about my area either but there are not quite the same opportunities for 1000 metres dives that I think you have! It looks to me that if you could find your way to about 46° 51.237'N 9° 28.340'E then this should be possible, allowing also for the DJI hard coded maximum height of 500 metres above the take-off point. I look forward to maybe seeing that one in the future also! (First I spent a lot of time in Google Earth "flying" around Switzerland trying to geo-locate the flight location. A few minutes after finding the right town but also not recognising it for sure I read the full description for your video. Hah!)
    Have you ever tried geocaching? I ask only because there is a geocache fairly close to where I live called "Chur Bro!", or similar, and in NZ slang that is roughly equivalent to saying "thank you!" and giving a big thumbs up. 🙂

    • @TheLensSchwendi
      @TheLensSchwendi  6 месяцев назад

      Well, I have to thank you!! I appreciate taking the time to watch and write. The coordinates you shared are pretty much exactly the area, where I plan to fly next 😃. And you encourage me even more to do it! I hope I don't crash it there, because this slope is extremely dangerous due to rockfall. So I wont be go there to save the drone, if it crashed. But I guess I will try...
      Yeah, it was my plan to show you the footage of the crash, that's why I desperately wanted to save the drone. But unfortunately, the footage on the SD card of the drone stopped recording about 10s before the crash. I guess, this is because the footage is first in a buffer before being safed on the SD card and at the moment of the crash, it stopped writing on the SD card. So the closest footage to the crash is the goggle recording, which I showed in the video. I should have mentioned the other thing, but the video was already getting very long and I didn't want to make it longer.
      So thanks again for writing and for your inspiring tip about the 1000m dive. I will check out later, if there is snow up there or if I can get there safe and sound. Have a nice weekend!

    • @CNoEvilNZ
      @CNoEvilNZ 6 месяцев назад +1

      Ah yes - concerning of the last part of the flight not recording to the SD card on the drone after a hard crash, the same thing happened to me so I should have thought of that. In my crash I did not lose transmission though and so the goggle recording was complete.
      Also I think you mentioned in your video that after losing transmission you hoped the drone would switch to normal mode, and execute a return to home. I think the problem here is that the Avata has to lose transmission for 3.5 seconds before it starts doing anything like that. So if you are flying fast and/or in close proximity to ground, etc., it may be too late!
      With my Mini 2 it is 11 seconds and I have tested that, but it seems riskier to test the Avata's behaviour especially in manual mode and so I've not yet attempted that. I do keep meaning to try it though, in a nice clear and flat area, in slow straight and level flight at a safe height, with someone else watching the drone carefully, etc., then turning off the remote controller and hoping it doesn't do something really stupid like immediately dive into the ground!
      Last thing - some years ago I got very excited by wing suit base jumping. (Not quite excited enough to try it though!) No doubt you have seen the videos also. One I watched many times on YT was Jeb Corliss "Grinding the Crack". A search will find it easily. I managed to work out where that was filmed and saved the position in Google Earth. Now I see that spot is only about 35 km from Chur (as a bird flies). Maybe it is time for an Avata to reproduce that flight in some way? It seems it could be possible! Use a similar title and the same music (like another featuring a cat - "Kitty Corliss Grinding the crack") and you might achieve a similarly massive number of views!
      Good luck!!

    • @TheLensSchwendi
      @TheLensSchwendi  6 месяцев назад

      @@CNoEvilNZ ah, that's very interesting, thank you for telling me. In 3.5 seconds, the drone would have made about 70 meters or more at that speed, so it sure crashed into the rocks before 3.5 seconds were over.
      Meanwhile I did some research about the coordinates you mentioned above. Unfortunately, it's a a wildlife rest zone, so I'm not allowed to fly down there. It's really a pity, I would have loved this and I was already planning to do it this weekend. So game over with this project.
      But thank you about mentioning the Grinding the Crack video. As a matter of fact I know this crazy video and the exact location as well. I normally don't copy others and try to find my own "path". But I'll think about it, so thank you very much. I have a few other spots here in mind as well. There are really endless possibilities, but many of the easily accessible spots are protected, so I have to hike or bike a bit. Looking forward to it.
      Thanks again for taking the time, I really appreciate!

      @@TheLensSchwendi - I thought you may be interested to know I finally tested the behaviour of my Avata (in manual mode) yesterday when transmission is lost.
      I tested two things. First what happens if the signal to the Goggles (Goggles 2 in my case) is lost (but the controller still has working connection). I did this by turning off the Goggles with the drone in a relatively stable slow forward flight at a safe height above the ground. This appeared to result in a short delay (perhaps around the 3.5 seconds that the manual mentions) and then direct return to home initiated (as per my settings) in normal mode. After that I did a separate test where from a similar position I turned the controller off but left my Goggles on. In this case the drone appeared to switch to normal mode immediately, then retraced its preceding path for about 50 metres (actually going away from me) and then commenced a return to home, climbing to preset altitude, etc. This behaviour (retracing about 50 metres of the preceding flight path and then doing a RTH) is what I have also seen when testing my DJI Mini 2 previously using a similar method (turning off controller) to see what happens when transmission between controller and aircraft is lost.
      So now I have just looked again at your Goggle recording from when your Avata crashed in the canyon. As far as I can see the signal from the remote controller to the aircraft was possibly still quite strong even though the image transmission back from the aircraft to the Googles was lost. (This is the pattern I usually see, with the Goggles transmission being less robust that the outgoing signal from the remote controller.) I know there is no use "crying over spilt milk" but possibly you could have quickly increased power and maybe also pulled back a bit on the right-hand stick to fly the aircraft out of the canyon "blind" (with the Goggles no longer receiving video feed from the drone). Or perhaps even hitting the "brake button" very quickly would have worked. I try to have myself "primed" to do something like this when flying in a situation where it might be necessary but 3.5 seconds isn't much time to realise what is happening and also react!
      In any case, if there is a "next time" I hope this might help! :-)

    • @TheLensSchwendi
      @TheLensSchwendi  5 месяцев назад +1

      @@CNoEvilNZ hey, thank you so much for sharing your insight, that's really valuable! I truly appreciate! As a matter of fact, I did desperately throttle up the power to lift the drone out off the canyon, but I'm afraid, my manoevre was too hard, or even in my panic I was maybe also yawing and rolling. So if the control still had contact, maybe my panic reaction crashed the drone in the wall of the canyon. I can't say for sure, but that's a real possibility. But your experiment is very helpful, cause if this ever happens again, I'll try the brake button. That's what I should have done. I have to practice this in the simulator, i.e. being fast enough. I not really use the brake button very often, so I have to find him first in an emergency :). So, thanks again, this was very interesting!
