*The “DD eye” logo was designed by NID alumnus Devashis Bhattacharyya in the early 1970s; Prime Minister Indira Gandhi picked his design from NID submissions. In May 2019, Prasar Bharti - the TV wing of India’s public service broadcasting - shortlisted five submissions for DD’s new logo.*
The signature tune of Doordarshan was first brought to life by Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan during his shehnai recital in an hour and a half long inauguration ceremony of Doordarshan Television Channel held at Vigyan Bhava in New Delhi. Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan was the one who first breathed life into that sad sounding tune. As more and more cities started receiving the signals of Doordarshan, the number of its viewers kept increasing. It became a truly powerful medium. But, a medium of what - this was yet to be decided. Indira Gandhi, the Indian Prime Minister at the time, understood the power of this new medium. A common sentiment of the public during the turbulent 70s was: Nehru was a visionary!?, Shastri a revisionary!?, and Indira Gandhi a televisionary!?. Indira Gandhi knew how to wield and harvest the power of television. Indira Gandhi wanted the signature tune of Doordarshan to be based on the song - Iqbal's saarey jahan se acha.
The task of composing the tune was entrusted to sitar maestro Pandit Ravi Shankar. But, he realised that the actual tune of saarey jahan se acha was of a bit longer duration. Working with Ustad Ali Ahmad Hussain Khan, Ravi Shankar finally came up with a variation of the original tune and created what can truly be termed the 'National tune of India'.

Beginnings-:
1959: President Rajendra Prasad launches DD as a pilot project at AIR studio in Delhi. It telecasts 1- hour programmes on social education twice a week
1965: Daily transmissions begin with shows in morning and evening; five-minute news bulletins start; telecast duration goes up to 4 hours over the coming years
1975: DD broadcasting extends to seven more cities, including Mumbai and Amritsar
1976: DD becomes as a standalone department, apart from AIR
1982: Nationwide telecast begins; colour TVs reach Indian homes
1984: DD network adds more channels, starting with DD 2 (now DD Metro)
1991: Cable TV & private channels enter the market leading to a decline in DD viewership
2004: DD launches DD Free Dish, India’s only free DTH service
2016: DD Free Dish goes from Insat-4B to Gsat-15 satellite to allow more free-to-air channels on its DTH service.
