Seriously, I have lived most of my life in the UK and US and my Bengali is flawless. My parents sent me to the best schools and universities in the poshest of neighborhoods and cities of the world, including Kolkata, but I take pride in my Bengali. Nobody can tell that I have lived 15 out of my 28 years in western countries. The fact that my western education respected my Bengali background, is why I want to continue with it and teach it to my kids in the future. These people are ashamed of their own background, which is why they think using English will uplift their status in Kolkata. These things are nothing but a remnant of colonial mentality which the British Council propagated many years ago when Arpita took classes there. Now even the BC is working on getting rid of accented racism. I know because I have worked in their research and development team and I am a linguist who works in the area of language acquisition and child language development in the US.
